Mitt Romney confronts the birth control debate

Republican candidate supports religious freedom

Baton Rouge, La. February 27, 2012 12:25 PM News Facts On February 6, 2012, Mitt Romney criticized President Barack Obamas birth control proposal in Loveland, Colo. This event has caused an uproar regarding Romneys views on the use of birth control. Obamas proposal would force Catholic-affiliated employers to pay for birth control, which inherently violates the churchs value system. As former governor of Massachusetts, Romney was presented with a similar proposal but did not react with the same fervor. Despite his past, Romney feels strongly about the issue and claims that the proposal attacks religious freedom and imposes a secular agenda. Romney stated that he will support religious values as president and will not allow the government to impose on citizens religious rights regarding contraception. Romney does not support the use of birth control pills nor abortive pills such as Plan B. Quotations When choosing a political candidate, my religious values do play a part in who I vote for. I support Romneys incorporation of religion into his views on birth control, and I hope that he continues to discourage its use. Caitlin McWilliams, Political Science student, Louisiana State University, February 20, 2012 I agree with Romneys political stance on birth control. However, he needs to solidify his beliefs before the public will deem him credible. Kadi Malek, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Student, February 20, 2012 Images
