The Summary of Extended Practicum performance based on program goals

including indicators of proficiency, growth and future goals: Janelle demonstrated confidence, and continually developed competence, throughout her internship. She was a commanding presence in the Physical Education environment and worked to incorporate different management techniques and transition strategies into her teaching. She was a role model for the students, making individual connections with them, through her coaching role in the junior football program. She worked to create an atmosphere of respect with her students through individual conversations and she will work to increase her repertoire of classroom management techniques in order to be more adaptive to her students needs in the future. Janelle worked with colleagues to improve her teaching strategies; specifically in the areas of direct instruction, inquiry based learning, team teaching, and the incorporation of technology in the classroom. Janelle has been receptive to feedback and suggestions for improvement, and she will continue to work on developing her reflective teaching practices. In her continued development as a professional, she will work to develop in the area of differentiated instruction in an effort to meet the needs of all of her students. Janelle consistently displayed a strong teaching presence in the English classroom. She successfully used the instructional strategies of inquiry learning and team teaching. Throughout the semester she slowly but surely developed the skill of connecting the curriculum outcomes to her lessons content. In her final unit Janelle demonstrated the ability to incorporate First Nations, Indian, and Metis (FNIM) content into the classroom through the use of stories, essays, and poems. At the end of her internship Janelle displayed a commitment to unit and lesson planning, which she will continue to work on throughout her career. One future goal that Janelle has is to continue working on establishing a clear connection for her students between the curriculum outcome and the classroom activities. At the beginning of her internship Janelle struggled with organization, effective lesson planning, and long term course development. After making a contract with her cooperating teachers and college supervisors at midterm, Janelle re-focused and put forth a lot of time and effort into her lesson development. One of the ways that she worked to gain expertise was by researching and developing content to present at a student appropriate level. Through this and other efforts Janelle became skilled in individual lesson planning and she will continue to develop proficiency in her long term planning with practice. Janelle demonstrated patience and openness with her students, which allowed them to develop strong relationships with her. Janelle worked hard to create personal connections with the content for her students by sharing her own experiences and by creating safe opportunities for the students to share their own experiences with each other. She worked to create a safe classroom through the co-construction of classroom guidelines with the students. She will continue to work on creating a classroom that develops independent learners and empowers students as resources for one another.

SUMMARY OF PROGRESS TOWARDS PROGRAM GOALS The teacher candidate Janelle Olchowy has achieved in the following areas:

1. Support broad areas of student growth by providing varied and constructive learning opportunities
Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Has shown effective skills while team teaching in the areas of English and Physical education. Has become skilled in facilitating goal setting in Physical Education 9 with the students setting goals for personal relationships and self-assessment and peer assessment. Developed the ability to connect curriculum outcomes to the activities of the lesson. Is continually working on transitions and has shown thought while developing new ways of making groups in the classroom and gymnasium.

2. Affirm dignity and respect for individuals (students, families, colleagues)

Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Has shown that she is adaptive to students personal challenges inside and outside the classroom. For example, when students have missed classes for medical reasons, she made individual plans for the students to make up for missed work. Worked to develop a learning environment supportive of the growth of her students. She has gotten to know her students and made adaptations to lesson plans to engage students and meet their individual needs. Collaborated in discussion and planning with EAL Cooperating teacher to structure learning activities with individual students in mind. She has given options to some of the students to make their essay writing more intellectually challenging and beneficial for the students.

3. Strive to support social justice and ecological responsibility

Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Has used events happening locally, nationally, and globally to raise awareness and make connections to students life experiences. While studying To Kill A Mockingbird she made connections between racism in the south and racism that students may see or experience in their individual lives. Janelle has used her own personal experiences to engage students, facilitate discussion and relate to literature. While talking about life changing events during adolescence Janelle shared personal stories that changed her life and how she dealt with those events. She has talked to her Physical Education class about sports that the students play in the countries that they originated from. Some of the students did not seem interested in the sports she was covering so she had some individual conversations with the students to find out what they would be more interested in and included them into the class.

4. Develop as a critical reflective practitioner who connects practical

and theoretical knowledge

Demonstrated proficiency and growth: She has used personal reflection to improve teaching and planning. She has been writing in a journal daily about how lessons have gone and specific things to change and the try next time. She worked to gain the ability to create course appropriate activities and assignments for her classes based on independent research. Is still working towards developing proficiency in using formative assessment as a means to inform future teaching.

5. Create a positive community in the classroom and school Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Janelle has worked to create a democratic classroom and an atmosphere of inclusion where each student has a voice. In Health 9 the students feel they have a safe opportunity to share their ideas and have their opinions valued with out being judged or criticized.

She has utilized resources and staff within the school (example: resource teachers, teacher librarian) in order to bring more knowledge into the classroom as well as to develop as a teacher. She accessed the teacher librarian to learn about a computer program for the students to use when formatting their magazines in their adolescence unit in English. Janelle tried to develop learning opportunities that promote positive and respectful interactions. In Physical Education she has gone over the curriculum and the students have set goals for positive relationships and how they are going to interact with each other.

6. Build instructional competence and strong teacher identity Demonstrated proficiency and growth: Janelle has selected and executed certain management techniques and lesson transitions that are appropriate to individual classes and age groups. She has begun to develop an awareness of the bigger picture of teaching unit and lesson planning with curriculum outcomes in mind and she will continue working on this. Janelle has focused on the distribution of feedback to individual students in Physical Education 9.

TEACHER CANDIDATES SELF-ASSESSMENT INCLUDE INDICATORS OF PROFICIENCY, GROWTH AND FUTURE GOALS I have been very fortunate to have two cooperating teachers who have different teaching styles and have allowed me to use and develop the styles that I have found work best for me. They have been very supportive and allowed me to grow and develop strengths where I needed improvement. While teaching English I learned a lot with the curriculum change and now use literate as a way to meet curricular outcomes instead of to study the literature for its content. I was very lucky to have a cooperating teacher who is very passionate in what she does and an intern facilitator whose main area was English. They both helped me with adjustments in classroom setup, management techniques and delivery of content. One of my strengths in English is incorporating FNIM content into the classroom. We have had several discussions on the history of First Nations people in Canada as well as brought things close to home to talk about events that have taken place in Saskatchewan. Another strength I have is the connection I have made with my students. I have gotten to know the students better and developed a level of understanding and mutual respect. This has allowed me to make up specific lesson plans to include some of their interests into the literature we are reading to increase engagement while meeting the outcomes of the class. Physical education is not only my major but my passion. I have had an amazing experience learning from someone who also shares this passion and has shared years of knowledge and experience with me. One thing I have learned that was not aware of was all of the bookings that go on with facilities, instructors and buses for Physical Education

classes. I have tried a variety of management and instructional techniques where some have failed and some have worked very well, I now know which work best for me and my teaching style I have developed an awareness of the organization and management that goes on with everything in the Physical Education environment and now have a students in routines that they know what to do as soon at they get changed out and get ready for class. One thing that I have found that works best for me in the Physical education setting is to actively show examples of what the activity or skill should look like. Things that have worked for me are being in the pool and teaching from there rather than standing on the deck trying to describe a skill or breaking down a skill such as a layup in Basketball and then showing them what it looks like and then having them practice it. One of my biggest goals is to continue using formative assessment and to keep coming up with new ways of assessing the students. Another goal of mine is to find more ways to incorporate FNIM into Physical Education classes. I look forward to continuing my growth as an educator and working with students to try need things. My main goal as a Physical Educator is and will continue to be to inspire a love of activity and to inspire the students to be active for the rest of their lives.
