SECONDARY TEACHER EDUCATION AT UNSW

I worked in marketing but teaching had always been a passion that I had put on hold - the time was right for me to change career paths. Both fellow students and university staff were incredibly inspiring - people came from all walks of life but we were all there to learn how to make a difference. The skills that UNSW instil apply to any school or discipline; to scaffold, differentiate and successfully manage a classroom in order to have happy students who are willing to build a relationship with their teacher. To be a great teacher you must be flexible what may work for one teacher might not work for you or your class. Instinct is paramount and differentiation imperative. I am inspired by the students I teach - as a teacher you have a chance to ensure that young people have the tools they need to live a happy life whatever their chosen career.
Francesca Jones Graduate: Graduate Diploma in Education

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The School of Education at UNSW is a research-intensive school and a key player in the professional preparation and development of teachers and other educational professionals in Australia and internationally. The School offers two intensive pre-service secondary teacher education programs for graduate students. The Master of Teaching is an accelerated pre-service secondary teacher education program specifically designed to support students in their transition into first year teaching and to nurture future leaders of the profession. The Graduate Diploma in Education is an intensive program consisting of the first three semesters of the Master of Teaching. The program provides a strong initial year of preparation for teaching in secondary schools. Both pre-service teacher education programs offer innovative teaching methods that link theory with practice and equip students with the understanding and skills needed to become competent education professionals. Students gain advanced skills in effective unit and lesson planning, and assessment and reporting design. An emphasis is placed on enhanced communication skills to ensure effective classroom communication, the practice of reflective teaching and the desire to continually improve professional knowledge and practice. The programs also encourage active engagement with members of the teaching profession and the wider community.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Both programs are recognised as an initial teaching qualification in both government and non-government schools in New South Wales and in all other states in Australia. The programs are also widely accepted as a teaching qualification internationally. Students gain accreditation with the NSW Institute of Teachers and are prepared for employment with the Department of Education and Training, independent schools and other relevant organisations.
