2012 STATE CHAMPIONS ALL TOP RANKINGS CEDAR RAPIDS, IA, MARCH 27, 2013: In anticipation of the start of the 2013 boys high school soccer season this week, the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSCAA) has released its class 1A, 2A and 3A preseason rankings. The top ranked team in the large school class is defending 3A champion Iowa City West. At #2 is Johnston, who lost in a close final last year to Iowa City West, 1 -0. The 3A field, as it does seemingly every year, will get an early test this weekend at the Trojan Classic as seven of the top fourteen teams will be competing against each other (#1 Iowa City West, #3 West Des Moines Valley, #4 Iowa City High, #8 Pleasant Valley, #9 Dowling Catholic, #12 Cedar Rapids Washington, and #14 Muscatine). Action kicks off 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the University of Iowa Recreational Complex. Unsurprisingly in class 1A, defending state champion Waterloo Columbus, who stopped Iowa City Reginas three year run as title holders last spring in a semifinal match in penalty kicks, starts the season as the top team. Columbus and Iowa City Regina are the only two schools to win 1A titles since boys soccer expanded to three classes in 2009. Rounding off the parade of champions is Dubuque Wahlert at the top of the class 2A list. The defending state champion is followed by #2 Norwalk and #3 Cedar Rapids Xavier. Wahlert beat Norwalk in last years final, 1-0, and Norwalk defeated Xavier in a quarterfinal match by penalty kick tie-breaker, 2-1. All three schools play a rugged conference schedule as each of them plays in a 3A dominated conferenceWahlert and Xavier in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) and Norwalk in the Central Iowa Metro League (CIML).
