Ein Schmetterling ist in meinem Bro. A butterfly is in my office.

As Im completing the work on this book, (yes, Im writing the introduction last) a butterfly has just appeared on my computer out of nowhere. How a butterfly found its way up to the second floor of my house and into the office is beyond me. But hes here all right. As Im watching him flutter around the room, it strikes me that using German as a second language with your children is a bit like this butterfly; the opportunity often appears out of nowhere. If youre not a native speaker yourself (if you are, you probably know most of the stuff in this book), youll find yourself switching back and forth between English and German a lot. Thats ok. Its very difficult to use 100% German if you dont have a large vocabulary and youre not used to it. Just do what you can and build on your knowledge.

Often parents tell me they have no problem conversing in German with other adults but that their college German class just didnt teach them how to speak to a toddler! How true this is. Even spending a year abroad may leave you with a deficit of German kid-speak. After all, youre likely not going to be spending lots of time taking care of children. The traditional classroom doesnt teach stuff like this.

Speaking German as a second language with your kids is a bit like catching a butterfly. You have to take the opportunities as they come.

I hope that this little guide will give you a boost when you want to make bedtime a German time in your home, or when youre wondering how to talk about playground activities with your kids. There are 12 categories with 352 German phrases useful to parents and children in everyday activities. Now youll be prepared with lots of German phrases when the opportunity presents itself. My kids favorite playground includes a bonus an icy creek thats just the thing for wading on a hot summers day. Ive included some phrases just for wading in this playground section. German phrases for playing at the playground, wading in the creek and getting ready to go home. Kannst Du das Seil hochklettern? Kannst Du Klimmzge machen? Los, wir gehen zum Spielplatz! Rutschst Du gerne? Gefllt es Dir hier? Vergi Deinen Drachen nicht. Viel Spa! Geh nur bis zu Deinen Knien rein. Hast Du Dein Netz dabei? Was fr ein Kfer ist das? Wirf die Steine ins Wasser. Experts advise creating a familiar bedtime routine to help children relax into sleep. Whether or not we always manage to follow the routine is another story. Familiar routine or not, bedtime is an easy time to use German since many of the words are the same day after day. German phrases to help you and your little one get ready for bed. Schlafenszeit! Whether its a special outing or just an everyday trip, a ride in the car is a chance to have a few extra moments with your child without the distractions of a busy life swirling around you both. School can be tricky to discuss with kids since it is (usually) conducted in English and most kids wont have as much German vocabulary as they may for other topics. Working in the kitchen is a great place to have quality time with your kids. You can teach them cooking and baking skills and enjoy the yummy treats when youre done. Make this time do double-duty by sticking to German while youre cooking.

Doesnt it seem like weve just begun? I realize that weve only covered 12 categories but it is over 300 phrases. Weve got to stop somewhere, dont we? P.S. Heres one more extremely useful phrase for you. Its a phrase equally useful for dawdling toddlers and reluctant ten-year-olds. Its Na los!, meaning Get going! And so I say to you, Na los! Viel Spa und bis bald.
