Abstract Volume of sediment in Bili-Bili reservoir showed increase significantly from year to year, especially after the caldera of Mt. Bawakaraeng collapsed in 2004. Sediment data of 2007 - 2008 period reaching >75 million m3, while sediment data November 2008 - April 2009 period in Bili-Bili reservoir reaching >12 million m3 with the lowest elevation in intake and its surroundings area is 62.1 - 62.8 m. That condition showed the potency of clogged drain at intake in the future. One of the additional works planned become the priority to be achieved, i.e. dredging of sediment in intake and its surroundings area. Volume of dredged sediment be planned is 100,000 - 200,000 m3 per year. Dredged material planned will be placed at stock yards at left side, below Bili-Bili Dam. Constraint faced by this plan is the limited capacities of stock yard. Thereby, the system where available stock yard only as temporary stock yard requires to be developed. Potential alternative is study or research on mineralogy and physicalchemical characteristics of dredged sediment. The study results will advantage alternatives for utilizing sediment potency for various need economically (besides for congeries), such as brick industry, roof-tile, concrete brick, paving block, earthenware, plant media (paddy field), etc. The potency mentioned above is very supported by the existence of the other raw materials (such as sand, clay, lime, chaff, rice field, etc.) around the stock yard. The condition also relevant because industrial such as above widespread quite a lot in Gowa District. Concerning with problem mentioned above and its prospective friendly-used, therefore, the investigation for utilization as local material construction of dredging sediment based on its soil characteristics was conducted in the soil laboratories, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, and in the Department of Soil, Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University (April-July, 2010). The investigation results and engineering justification for utilization of dredging sediment of Bili-Bili Reservoir are soil sediment could be justified to behave similar to that of silty clay (group A-5 to A-6), general rating as subgrade is fair to poor. The USCS developed by A. Cassagrande, utilizing diagram so called Cassagrande's Chart soil sediment represents soil type ML & OL; organic silty clay with low - slight plasticities (ML & OL). The soft silty clay characteristics with low strength as well as medium degree of expansion could be considered as the limit potency in developing utilization program such as for construction works raw material, earthen works, stabilized admixture, etc. Typical utilizations of sediment material stabilized cement could be advantaged for subgrade layer and paving block type, but it seems could be used for conventional brick wall due to large volume change in dry state
