Letter from Sylvia Theissen, PTA President

I hope this newsletter finds everyone settling into 2013 routines. With so much going on during the 2nd semester I am sure the end of the school year will be here in the blink of an eye. With that said, I would like to look back at January and February to thank all the volunteers who made the many activities huge successes. Some of the activities PTA supported were the January/February Student and Staff Birthday Celebration, Election of the PTA Nominating Committee, Recognition of Reflections Award Winners, Founders Day Celebration, Spring Pictures, Back Screenings and the Winter Ball. I would also like to thank all the copy room volunteers who support the Tejeda teachers by making copies for them on a daily basis. Making copies for over 1500 students is a huge effort. The copy room volunteers are truly appreciated by the staff. Now looking forward, some of the upcoming events including:

Dear Parents: April 2nd - 7th grade Writing Day 1 and 8th grade Math April 3rd - 7th grade Writing Day 2 and 8th grade Reading April 23rd - 6th and 7th grade Math April 24th - 6th and 7th grade Reading and 8th grade Science April 25th - 8th grade Social Studies May 6th - Algebra EOC Please mark your calendars for the dates that are listed. We need to assure that our students are in attendance on these days and we do our best on the STAAR exams. Every day of school truly matters, but we need to comply with the state and try to represent our efforts as the students successfully complete these exams. Part of the administrative team will be going to Arlington at the end of this month to present at a conference on being a Texas School to Watch. We look forward to the opportunity and embrace the learning that will take place as well. In March we will have our first ever Be Pawsitive day prior to Spring Break. This is a day when a few of our students will learn to break down the barriers and we will continue to help students learn how to appreciate one another. If your child is involved, you will receive a letter. Finally, we would appreciate your assistance on two traffic issues. Please do not park on the red curb in front of the school. We need to keep this area free from traffic at all times. Even if you are going to run into the school for a short amount of time we request that you park in a designated spot. Secondly, I have been advised that tickets will be issued to people using a cell phone in the school zone. Warnings have been given multiple times during the year; tickets will be given at this time. Our motive is to keep every child safe and to avoid an accident. Your support is always appreciated and we are looking forward to seeing everyone at History Faire and Culture Fest on April 6. We also would love to have your help at our beautification day on March 23. Brenda Shelton Principal

WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative program of the National Center for Fathering focusing on the prevention of violence in our nations schools by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: 1) to provide an unobtrusive presence in the schools, and 2) to be a positive and active role-model for students at their school. WATCH D.O.G.S. was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR. Message from the Main Office

by Marsha Stiles

The Tejeda main office would like to share a few procedural tips for making your visits to our campus a pleasant experience. When the need arises, and your presence is required at Tejeda, you will need to do the following: 1. No matter the reason for the visit, you are required to stop at the main office first to sign in. 2. If you are only there to drop something off for your child, or to pick up a sick child from the clinic, you must sign in at the main office counter and take the yellow laminated pass found in the pocket of the sign in binder. 3. If you need to go anywhere else in the building, you will need to be signed in through the Raptor system. Your driver's license is required for this procedure. Once the license has been scanned during your first visit, you will only need to tell us your name for any subsequent visits. However, you will always need to show your DL to sign your student out at the clinic and/or the attendance window. 4. It is extremely important that during the morning hours of 7:30-8:30 a.m. you understand that the front parking lot is closed for buses only. The same applies to the afternoon pick up from 2:50-3:45 p.m. If you arrive to pick up a student at 2:45 p.m. and park in the front parking lot, please do not park anywhere in the circle drive. The middle section of the parking lot is the recommended place to park. Parking in any other space may result in your vehicle being blocked in by the school buses. Please also be aware that if this happens, we are not allowed to ask the buses to move. 5. We will soon have a new Raptor system set up near the student drop off/pick up area in the event you enter the building from the back parking lot during the early morning times. Those badges will be printed from the ISS room/ C142.

Counselors Corner : Reducing Test Anxiety

by Shawnda Christopher
All of these will work toward reducing test anxiety:

Put tests in perspective. No test exists that will determine the future success or failure of a person. Tests are for the students benefit because they point out strengths and weaknesses which the student should be aware of. Studying for a test is the best way to reduce test anxiety. This may not work for standardized tests, but it will work for course work. RELAX. Before the test, students might benefit from taking a few moments to close their eyes, drop their hands by their sides, lower their chins to their chests, and breathe deeply. Use of peaceful imagery during this relaxation exercise often helps lessen anxiety. Students should visualize themselves doing well on tests. Often, much anxiety occurs because students are overly concerned with failure or with earning a poorer grade than they want. Slow and easy. Remind students that many test errors are simple careless oversights. Remind them to read all the directions slowly and carefully, and maybe even twice before going on to answer the problems. Students should also pay close attention to the teachers verbal instructions. Where are you? Often during tests, students attention wanders and they must guard against their own off-task behavior. Suggest that when they catch themselves off-task, take a moment to breathe deeply, then continue on with the exam. Work at a comfortable pace. Students who speed through exams often make careless errors. Students should mark questions that they are unsure of and move on. After they have finished the last question, they should then return to those unanswered questions. The most important thing about tests is not the grade, but that you did your best. Remind students of this. They should not compare themselves to other students, only to their last effort. A teacher can play a vital role in helping students improve their self-image which, in turn, will help them to reduce their test anxiety. Be positive, encourage and praise effort, criticize kindly and constructively, encourage students to speak well of themselves and their efforts.

Library Lost & Found

Moms, does your kids wardrobe seem limited these days? Are they sitting on the front porch when you get home from work? Are they taking their lunch in a paper bag instead of the lunch box you purchased for them? If so, they need to stop by the library lost and found to look for their sweat shirts, sweaters, house keys and lunch boxes. While they are there they can look for any winter coats, prescription eye glasses, P.E. clothing, shoes and many other assorted items they may have misplaced. There is a huge selection so please encourage your child to take a look if they are missing anything. Thank you to Heather Gaudette, library volunteer, for organizing all the items. All unclaimed items are donated.

MONEY MATTERS As of November 1, 2004, North East ISD has established the following policy for accepting checks and collecting bad checks: For a check to be an acceptable form of payment, it must include your current and accurate name, address, telephone number, drivers license number and state. In the event your check is returned for non-payment, the face value may be recovered electronically along with a state allowed recovery fee. In the event your check is returned for non-payment, checks will no longer be an acceptable form of payment for the remainder of the school year.

COOPERATE WITH THE PACK

Have you noticed the icon on the bottom left side of the Tejeda web page? Cooperate with the Pack is another way to report bullying issues at Tejeda. In addition to the Bully Box, located outside the library, students can now click on the link, type in their issue or concern and press send. The emails will be checked 3 times throughout the school day. Urgent issues or concerns should be reported to proper authorities immediately or to campus administrators.

TABs Stand Project News

by Kristen Guerra

Tejeda Middle Schools T-Wolves Against Bullies (TAB) was asked by willUstand to take part in a crowd-sourced music video for an anti-bullying anthem called Stand through their Twitter page @PAWsitiveLeader. Charleigh Gere, a twelve-year-old from Vermont, inspired the Stand project after she experienced bullying in sixth grade. Charleigh desired a way to inspire other youth to stand up to bullying with the idea of having one voice unafraid. TAB members encouraged other students on campus to also support their efforts to stop bullying by creating a video submission from the entire school. Over 200 Tejeda students gathered in pink shirts, the color for anti-bullying, to create a video clip for the movement. The students spelled out the words STAND UP using their bodies in November 2012. Tejeda submitted their video clip in hopes of being selected for the music video. TAB members also sent a care package to Charleigh at her school, which included the clubs t-shirt, bracelet, and a picture of their submission with messages written on the back. Charleigh filmed a thank you response to the students package, while wearing their shirt and bracelet with the phrase At least Im not a bully. The response was featured on their Twitter page @willUstand. The video can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjUETkm_7-E On February 20, 2013, the video for the Stand project was released to the public. Charleighs brother Justin sang in the duet with his younger sister. Submissions were received from individuals from across the world. Students from Tejeda appeared twice in the crowd-sourced video and the school was recognized in the credits. Tejeda was the only school from Texas that was featured in the crowd-sourced music video. Stand can be seen at http://www.willustand.com/index.php
