COLDES V4

Design of Reinforced Concrete Columns

C
T

oldes is a computer program for the design and checking of reinforced concrete columns to AS 3600. Columns may be of rectangular, circular, or general shape. Minimum eccentricity and slenderness may be taken into account automatically. Biaxial bending is treated rigorously, without using the code approximation based on uniaxial bending. Reports may include interaction diagrams in several styles and column cross-sections may be output to a CAD DXF.

he Coldes main window displays thumbnail images of all the column cross-sections in the job. Pop-up data tips help to identify individual sections. You can rightclick on a thumbnail to display a full-size detail diagram or interaction diagram, either of which may then be printed.

he column dialog box (above) has a diagram on the left, input data on the right, and an output window at the bottom. Any data item may be edited by clicking the adjacent button. The diagram, initially a detail of the column cross-section, may be switched to a key diagram, a graph of the stressstrain relationship, or an interaction diagram. A design report is displayed in the output window. The Print button generates a report with either a detail diagram or an interaction diagram. Clicking the DXF button creates an AutoCAD DXF with a detail of the column section. Coldes will also display virtual reality views o f t h e c o l u m n g e o m e t r y, t h e b e n d i n g moment diagram, and the interaction surface.

oncrete and reinforcement grades may be selected from lists of standard values or you may enter any other value within the allowable ranges. Several concrete stress-strain relationships are available, including the rectangular stress block, and the CEB 73 and CEB 90 curves. The stress-strain relationship used is identified on all output.

ultiple load cases may be dened. For short columns axial load and moments are entered for each load case. When slenderness effects are to be considered additional load values are entered for each end of the column.

hree types of interaction diagram are available: Single load angle Multiple load angle N-Mx with My contours Single load angle shows a number of curves, each for a different reinforcement percentage, at a constant load angle (i.e. a constant ratio of My/Mx). Multiple load angle shows a number of curves for a constant reinforcement percentage and variable load angle, while N-Mx with My contours shows the N-Mx capacity of the column section with varying values of the My moment.

A
lenderness effects may be taken into account automatically to magnify bending moments according to the rules of the design code. This virtual reality view of the interaction surface shows column loads for a single load case. The arrows illustrate the moment magnication applied to obtain the design loads. Any point outside the interaction surface indicates that the column has failed the code design check. Clicking the Design button in the column dialog box automatically increases the bar size until all the points lie within the failure surface.

dvanced Windows features, such as HTML Help, pop-up Help, tooltips, and data tips, make Coldes easy to use. The full manual is available on-line with a table of contents, an index, and a text-search facility.

Professional support is available to users with a current version of the software. Minor program updates may be downloaded from the internet. Upgrades to Coldes V4 are available from previous versions of the program. CaSC Jl. Junaida No. 8B Jakarta Indonesia Tel: (62-21) 7590 2952 Fax: (62-21) 7590 2953
