O F CONTROVERSIES AND STALEMATES ! *Y AWNS *: ECOSOC

The day began with a fresh zeal among the delegates and an earnestness of the Council to reach a substantive and conclusive solution for all the motions that were raised by the Council in the sessions that followed. Keeping in mind the paucity of time on the concluding day of the MUN, the Executive Board briefed the delegates asking them not to divert from the agenda at hand with the aim of attaining concrete solutions and measures for the protection of the rights of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons. With that perspective the first motion was raised by Canada on a very somber and pertinent issue of Food Security and Health of the Refugees. A healthy discussion followed wherein the Delegate of Jordon held an interesting opinion of deploying women in refugee camps citing various Zimbabwean instances of women refugees being raped. He remarked A woman can open to a woman only. . The next motion on the floor was self-financing and generation of revenue for the settlement and rehabilitation of refugees which was followed up by certain very innovative solutions like multi-storey gardens for production and Common asian asylum as put forth by the Delegates of Israel and Democratic People's Republic of Korea respectively. The day had its own share of grotesque chits and never ending inconclusive discussions. The Rappourteur when asked about his views on the energy and level of debate reported a meager 6 (on a scale of 10 of course!). One seems to wonder if this dull and lull was the reason that later in blatant disregard of protocol he overstepped his authority by suspending the delegate of France for 10 minutes from the Council (Internal squabbles for power?!). Another highlight of the day was the newfound love between Jordon and Palestine when the delegate of Jordon stated that Palestinian refugees will be granted citizenship by Jordon. This led to a bombardment of follow up questions which left the Jordan delegate dumbfounded. The Delegate of Palestine grinning widely remarked Path-breaking statement my friend! This would solve 60% of Palestine's refugee problems.. On being asked if the delegate of Jordon felt his job was in danger after such a controversial statement without the government's backing, the Delegate did not care enough to answer and was later noticed in a pool of sweat. Meanwhile far beyond refugees and diplomatic stands of power blocs formed for reaching solutions, the delegate of China seemed to be having a soothing siesta. When as to what is going on in the council, the chit said Dude! Don even have ne idea wat all this abt!!(sic). In another interesting instance, the Delegate of Myanmar seemed to not know his own country's spellings! However he did not blink an eye before vehemently calling the U.S.A. A thief and police who by imposing sanctions is killing a child in the mother's womb that is killing democracy! (Democracy? Mother's womb? Police? Myanmar you lost us there bro!). The final day of the MUN thus saw some very interesting suggestions and ideas put forth by the nations to tackle the problem of refugees. Yet a consensus was not reached. A bewildered Jordan, a smirking Palestine and a frowning USA thus marked the end of this session. P.S.: JORDAN: You can teach a man how to fish but not give him a fish everyday. Employment solves all problems! -Avleen Kohli

The Executive Board, with their renewed energy commenced the session with the GSL. The day saw an intensive argumentative session despite the non-lustrous and a pompous start. Not to mention there were some plaguing and horrifying moments when the Delegates were indecisive of the policies of their own countries. The Delegate of China never seemed to have finished her stance and also had confusing views of cognizance given to the SNC by her country. Similar was the situation of the Delegate of USA, who was apparently uncertain about the stance of his country on the favorability of provision of aids to Syria. To further add to his agony, the star-crossed delegate of USA was always disrupted by his fellow delegates and even by the Executive Board. If this was just not enough the Delegate of USA was not even aware of the current geographical and political position of the President of his own country (Heard about a word called research delegate?). The Council broke into a sense of amusement mixed with alarm due to the intervention of a monkey

outside the windows of the Council. However, no monkey-business is tolerated in the authoritarian walls of the Security Council and in regard to that the council resumed its proceedings without further wasting the time. The Council later moved into an unmoderated caucus which saw a lot of confusion (somethings never just lose their grip!).Eventually, it seemed like the cordiality between the Delegates of USA and UK was at stake due to the conflicting policies of their respective countries. After some time the Council broke for tea and an enhanced debate resumed once the delegates were all fed (Now we know what was barring them from unleashing their true self!). Filled up to brim, the Delegate of DPR Korea started the proceedings again by bringing up on the floor the topic Humanitarian crisis in Syria and outrageously spoke against the other nations. There were several moments infected with genuine humor and strong debate. The stance of Delegate of France was not taken seriously by the Council only

because he made a ghastly mistake of saying that the people are dying again and again! The Delegate of Peoples Republic of China asked the delegate of USA to stop playing the mommy act and actually help other countries while it owes a huge debt to China. The session had its own set of very productive moments like when the Delegate of India proposed a genuine solution of providing education to the Syrian population as education is the ultimate answer. During the session, the Committee lost its agenda and the chairperson had to list out all contents that were still to be discussed. This opened the unexplored grounds for debate and a relevant issue pertaining to Military Intervention of Nations in Syria was brought up but the Council failed to reach a just, balanced and neutral conclusion. With such battles raging within the council what becomes of it and whether or not it will reach a just and a unified decision is yet to be seen. - Sana Parvez

PANJAB UNIVERSITY MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE 2013

The press is more important than the politicians. But it is important only if it is free. For example in a country, the press has not fought that the television should not be government owned, that the radio should not be government owned. They should be public enterprises. Then the press can fight for individuals who have no power, but the press can give them great power.
