Museum Route
Iziko Museums consists of 12 National Museums in Cape Town. Each of the museums has its own history and character which reflects the cultural diversity of the oldest city in South Africa. Iziko is an isiXhosa word meaning hearth - symbolically the social centre of the home. The Iziko South African Museum (ISAM), located at 25 Queen Victoria Street is home to more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700 million years old to insects and fish caught last week. The collections contain stone tools made 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century and create a better understanding of the earth and its biological and cultural diversity, past and present.

AFRICAN DINOSAURS IZIKO SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM

African Dinosaurs is a permanent exhibition about the lives of these long-extinct reptiles. The exibition explores where they came from, what they ate, how they reproduced, how they adapted to the ever-changing environments and what caused their rapid decline (and global) into worldwide extinction around 65 million years ago. It also investigates the origins of the one direct descendant of dinosaurs - birds! It features two huge skeletons from north Africa, the herbivorous Jobaria and a fish-eating Suchomimus, as well as skulls of mega-carnivores Carcharaodontosaurus and Sarchosucus. Realistic dioramas of ancient Karoo landscapes with fleshed-up reconstructions of some of our South African dinosaurs help bring the fossils back to life. These include a hatchlings scene based on a very rare specimen of dinosaur eggs containing tiny Massospondylus embryos.

A child can see the world through the lens of a microscope, discover treasures in a sandpit, have a bird's eye view of a colony of ants, feel a whale's tooth, and so much more! KIDSCAPE TOWN
The city seen through the eyes of a child becomes one large playground. There are mountains to climb, wildlife to witness, forests to explore, botanical gardens in which to run freely and beautiful beaches where sand and sea offer hours of fun no money can buy. For kids with sea legs, there are boat trips from a number of seaside suburbs, including Gordons Bay, Simons Town and Hout Bay (which heads out to Duiker Island Seal Colony) and boat charters at the V&A Waterfront. For older children, horse riding in Constantia or Noordhoek, along a beautiful windswept beach, is an equestrian dream. For kids with

adventure on their minds, theres camel riding in Kommetjie, mountain biking in Tokai and surfing at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg. For families with smaller children, paddling at St. James Tidal Pool or a walk along the Sea Point promenade will lift the spirits without punishing the pocket. Lesser known is the plethora of rainy-day indoor activities and historical and educational sites that make Cape Town a perennial favourite for families: theme parks and safe places to play, art studios, indoor rock climbing, the aquarium, the planetarium, mineral scratch patches and Zip Zap circus, which trains talented children from underprivileged backgrounds and puts on a raucous display of acrobatics. With all there is to do and see, your kids wont be asking for TV.
