There is but one God. True is His Name, creative His personality and immortal His form. He is without fear sans enmity, unborn and self-illumined. By the Guru's grace He is obtained.

True He is even now and True He verily, shall be, O Nanak!
Stanza 1
ivcwr krn duAwrw vwihgurU dI igAwq nhIN huMdI, BwvyN AwdmI l`KW vwrI ivcwr ipAw kry[
By pondering on God, man cannot have a conception of Him, even though he may ponder over lacs of times.
BwvyN bMdw cup kr rhy Aqy lgwqwr iDAwn AMdr lIn rhy, aus nU mn dI SWqI prwpq nhIN huMdI[
Even though one be silent and remains absorbed in Lord's constant love he obtains not mind's silence.
KuiDAwvMqW dI KuiDAw dUr nhIN huMdI, BwvyN auh jhwnw dy pdwrQW dIAW pMfw dy Fyr hI ikauN nW lw lYx[
The hunger of the hungry departs not, even though they may pile up loads of the world's valuables.
ienswn dy kol hzwrW qy l`KW Akl-mMdIAW hox, pr iek BI (sweIN dy drbwr AMdr aus nU lwB nhIN pucwauNdI) aus dy nwl nhIN jWdI[
Man may possess thousands and lacs of wits, but not even one (goes with him) avails him in the Lord's court.

How can we be true and how can the screen of untruth be rent?
Stanza 2
sweIN dy Amr duAwrw srIr bxdy hn[ aus dw Amr vrnx kIqw nhIN jw skdw[
By the Lord's order bodies are produced. His order cannot be narrated.
aus dy Purmwn nwl rUhW hoNd iv`c AwauNdIAW hn Aqy aus dy Purmwn nwl hI mwn prwpq huMdw hY[
With His fiat the souls come into being and with His fiat greatness is obtained.
aus dy Purmwn duAwrw pRwnI cMgy qy mMdy huMdy hn Aqy aus dy ilKy Purmwn duAwrw hI auh ZmI qy ^uSI pwauNdy hn[
By His command the mortals are make high and low and by His written command they obtain woe and weal.
keIAW nU aus dI AwigAw rwhIN dwqW imldIAW hn Aqy keI aus dI AwigAw rwhIN Awvwgaux AMdr sdIv hI BuAweINdy hn[
Some obtain gifts through His order and some through His order are ever made to wander in transmigration.
swry aus dy Amr iv`c hn Aqy aus dy Amr qoN bwhr koeI nhIN[
All are subject to His fiat and none is exempt from His fiat.

O Nanak! if man were to understand Lord's fiat, then no one would take pride (speak in ego).
Stanza 3
ausdI SkqI nU kOx gwien kr skdw hY? ies nU gwien krn dw kIhdy kol bl hY?
Who can sing His might? Who has power to sing it?
kOx aus dIAW b^SISW nU Alwp Aqy aus dy nUrwnI prqwp nU smJ skdw hY?
Who can sing His bounties and know His resplendent effulgence?
keI suAwmI dIAW suMdr vifAweIAW Aqy bzurgIAW gwien krdy hn[
Some chant the Lord's beautiful excellences and magnificences.
vwihgurU dy ielm nU ijs dI soc ivcwr kTn hY, kOx gw skdw hY?
Who can chant God's Knowledge, whose study is arduous?
keI iek gwien krdy hn ik auh dyh nU rcdw hY qy Pyr ies nU im`tI kr idMdw hY[
Some sing that He fashions the body and then reduces it to dust.
keI iek gwien krdy hn ik vwihgurU pRwx lY lYdw hY qy muV vwps dy idMdw hY[
Some sing that God takes away life and again restores it.
keI gwien krdy hn ik hrI duryfy mlUm huMdw Aqy su`Jdw hY[
Some sing that God seems and appears to be far off.
keI gwien krdy hn ik auh swnU AYn prq`K hI dyK irhw hY[
Some sing that He is beholding us just face to face.
goibMd dIAW igAwn goStW ivcwrn vwilAW purSW dI koeI kmI nhIN[
There is no dearth of persons who dwell upon the Lord's discourses.
kroVW hI bMdy hrI bwry kroVW auqy kroVW ibAwn Aqy Drm-BwSn idMdy hn[
Millions give millions upon millions of descriptions and sermons regarding God.
dyx vwlw dyeI jWdw hY prMqU lYx vwly lY ky hwr hut jWdy hn[
The Giver continues giving but the recipients grow weary of receiving.
hwkm, Awpxy Amr duAwrw AwdmI nU Awpxy rsqy auqy tordw hY[
The Commander, by His command, makes man walk on His path.

saachaa saahib saach naa-i bhaakhi-aa bhaa-o apaar.
Stanza 4
swcw swihbu swcu nwie BwiKAw Bwau Apwru ] s`cw hY suAwmI, s`cw hY ausdw nwm Aqy sicAwrw ny aus dy nwm nU byAMq ipAwr nwl aucwrn kIqw hY[
True is the Lord, true His Name and the true have repeated His Name with infinite love.
lokIN pRwrQnw qy Xwcnw krdy hn: "swnU KYr pw, swnU KYr pw", qy dwqw b^iSSW krdw hY[
People pray and beg: "give us alms, give us alms", and the bestower bestows His gifts.
qW, aus dy Agy kI DirAw jwvy ijs duAwrw aus dI drgwh dw drSn ho jwvy?
Then, what should be placed before Him where-by His court may be seen?
AsIN Awpxy mu`KW qy kyhVy bcn aucwrn krIey ijMnHW nU srvx krky, auh swfy nwl muh`bq krn l`g jwvy?
Which words should we utter with our mouths by hearing which, He may begin to bear us love?
subHw svyry siqnwm dw aucwrn kr Aqy vwihgurU dIAW bzurgIAW dw iDAwn Dr[
Early in the morning utter the True Name and reflect upon God's greatness.
cMgy AmlW duAwrw dyh puSwk prwpq huMdI hY qy suAwmI dI dXw duAwrw mukqI dw drvwjw[
By Good actions the physical robe is obtained and by the Lord's benediction the gate of salvation.

Know thus, O Nanak! that the True One is all by Himself.
Stanza 5
pRBU dI pRIq nU Awpxy idl AMdr itkw ky aus dI kIrqI gwien qy srvx kr[
With the Lord's love reposed in thy heart sing and hear His praises.
ies qrHW qyrI qklIP dUr ho jwvygI Aqy qUM KuSI Awpxy gRih nU lY jwvyNgw[
Thus shalt thou shed pain and shalt take happiness to thy home.
gurbwxI r`bI klwm hY, gurbwnI swihb dw igAwn Aqy gurbwxI rwhIN hI suAwmI nU swry ivAwpk AnuBv kIqw jWdw hY[
Gurbani is the Divine Word, Gurbani the Lord's Knowledge and through Gurbani the Lord is realised to be all pervading.
gurU iSv hY, gurU hI ivSnU qy bRhmW, gurU hI iSv dI pqnI-pwrbqI, ivSnU dI pqnI
BwvyN mYN vwihgurU nU jwxdw hW, mYN aus nU vrxn nhIN kr skdw[ bcnw duAwrw auh ibAwn nhIN kIqw jw skdw[
Even though I Know God, I cannot narrate Him, He cannot be described by words.
smUh jIvW dw kyvl iek dwqwr hY[ auh mYnU kdy BI nW Buly[
There is but one Bestower for all the beings May, I never forget Him.

Stanza 6
jykr mYN ausnU cMgw l`g jwvW qW iehI myrw Drm AsQwn qy nHwauxw hY[ ausnU cMgw l`gx dy ibnw ieSnwn dw kI lwB hY?
If I become pleasing to Him that is my pilgrimage bath. Without pleasing Him of what avail is the ablution?
smUh swjy hoey jIvW nU ijhVy mYN qkdw hW, SuB AmlW bwJoN aunHW nU kI imldw hY, Aqy auh kI lYNdy hn?
All the created beings, that I behold, without good acts what are they given and what do they obtain?
mn AMdr hIry jvwhr qy lwl hn, jykr qUM gurW dI iek BI isiKAw srvx krky Aml kr lvyN[
In the mind are gems, jewels and rubies, provided thou you act upon (hearken to) even one instruction of the Guru.
smUh jIvW dw kyvl iek dwqwr hY[ auh mYnU kdy BI nW Bu`ly[
There is but one Bestower for all the beings. May, I never forget Him.
Stanza 7
BwvyN ienswn dI aumr cwr jugW dI hovy Aqy ds guxw vDyry BI ho jwey[
Though a man's age be equal to four ages and grow even ten times more,
BwvyN auh nOvW hI mhwdIpW AMdir pRisD hovy qy swry aus dy mgr l`gdy jW turdy hox,
Even though he be known in the nine continents and all were to walk with him (or follow in his train),
qy BwvyN auh srySt nwm rKvw lvy Aqy sMswr AMdr aupmw qy SoBw prwpq kr lvy[
and he were to assume good name and obtain praise and renown in the world.
jykr auh aus dI dXw idRStI dw pwqr nhIN, qd, aus dI koeI prvwh nhIN krygw,
If God's gracious glance falls not one him, them, no one would care for him,
auh kIiVAW iv`c nIc mkOVw igixAw jWdw hY Aqy pWbr BI aus auqy duSn lwauNdy hn[
he is accounted a vermin amongst worms and even the sinners impute accusations to him.
hy nwnk! vwihgurU nykI-ibhunw nU nykI bKSdw hY Aqy piv`qr AwqmwvW nU pivqRqweI pRdwn krdw hY[
O Nanak! God grants virtue to the non-virtuous and bestows piety on the pious.
mYN iksy ieho jyhy dw iKAwl nhIN kr skdw ijhVw aus auqy koeI imhrbwnI kr skdw hovy[
I can think of no such one who can show any goodness unto Him.
Stanza 8
vwihgurU dy nwm nU srvx krn nwl pRwnI pUrn purS, Dwrmk AwgU, rUhwnI XoDw Aqy v`fw XogI ho jWdw hY[
By hearing God's Name the mortal becomes a perfect person, religious guide, spiritual hero and a great yogi.
vwihgurU dy nwm nU srvx krn duAwrw pRwnI nU DrqI, ies dy cu`kx vwly klpq bld Aqy Asmwn dI AslIAq dw pqw l`g jWdw hY[
By hearing God's Name the reality of the earth, it's supposed supporting bull and the heaven is revealed unto the mortal.
sweIN dy nwm nU srvx krx duAwrw AwdmI nU mhw-dIpW, purIAW Aqy hyTilAW loAW dI igAwq ho jWdI hY[
By hearkening to the Lord's Name man comes to have the knowledge of the continents, the worlds and the nether regions.
r`b dy nwm nU srvx krn duAwrw mOq pRwnI lwgy nhIN l`g lgdI (Azwb nhIN dy skdI)[
By hearing the Lord's Name death cannot torment (touch) the mortal.
mwlk dy nwm nU srvx krx duAwrw kSt qy ksml qbwh QI vM\dy (qbwh ho jWdy) hn[
By hearing to the Master's Name sorrow and sin meet with destruction.
Stanza 9
swihb dy nwm nU suxn nwl mOq dy dyvqy, auqpuqI dy dyvqy Aqy mINh dy dyvqy dI pdvI prwpq ho jWdI hY[
By hearing the Lord's Name the status of god of death, god of creation and god of rain is obtained.
rb dw nwm suxn duAwrw bdkwr BI Awpxy mUMh nwl sweIN dI is&q gwien krn l`g jWdy hn[
By hearing God's Name even the evil come to sing Lord's praises with their mouth.
hrI dw nwm suxn duAwrw jIv swihb nwl juVn dy rsqy qy srIr dy ByqW nU jwx lYNdw hY[
By hearing God's Name the mortal understands the ways of uniting with the Lord and the body's secrets.
mwlk dy nwm nU suxn duAwrw cOhW hI Dwrimk gRMQW, Cy PlsPy idAW gRMQW Aqy sqweI krmkWfI pusqkW dI igAwq prwpq ho jWdI hY[
By hearing the Lord's Name the Knowledge of the four religious books, six school of philosophy and twenty seven ceremonial treatise is acquired.
suAwmI dy nwm nU srvx krx duAwrw bImwrI qy gunwh dUr ho jWdy hn[
By hearing the Lord's Name disease and wickedness are wiped off.
Stanza 10
swihb dy nwm nU srvx krx duAwrw scweI sbUrI Aqy bRhm vIcwr prwpq ho jWdy hn[
By hearkening to the Lord's Name truthfulness, contentment and Divine Knowledge are obtained.
pRBU dy nwm nU srvx krn duAwrw ATwhT qIrQW auqy nHwaux dw Pl prwpq ho jWdw hY[
By hearing the Lord's Name the fruit of the ablution at sixty-eight holies is attained.
hrI dy nwm nU suxn Aqy iek rs vwcx duAwrw AwdmI ie`zq pwauNdw hY[
By hearing and constantly reading God's Name man gains honour.
swihb dy nwm nU suxn duAwrw AwdmI nU suKYn hI swihb dw ismrn prwpq ho jWdw hY[
By hearing the Name, man easily procures the Lord's meditation.
mwlk dy nwm nU srvx krn duAwrw kSt Aqy ksml qbwh ho jWdy hn[
By hearing the Lord's Name disease and wickedness are wiped off.
Stanza 11
suAwmI dy nwm nU srvx duAwrw AwdmI nykIAW dy smuMdr iv`c fUMGI cu`BI lwauNdw hY[
By hearing the Lord's Name man dives deep into the oceans of virtues.
suAwmI dy nwm dw srvx krnw pRwnI nU ivdvwn, rUhwnI rhbr Aqy bwdSwh bxw idMdw hY[
The hearkening of the Lord 's Name renders the mortal a scholar, spiritual guide and a monarch.
mwlk dy nwm nU suxn duAwrw AMnHy ienswn rsqw l`B lYNdy hn[
By hearing the Master's Name the blind find their way.
r`b dw nwm srvx krn duAwrw AQwh swihb dI Qwih Aw jWdI hY[
By hearing the Master's Name the unfathomable Lord becomes fathomable.
mwlk dy nwm nU srvx krn duAwrw kSt Aqy ksml qbwh ho jWdy hn[
By hearing the Lord's Name disease and wickedness are wiped off.
Stanza 12
jo pRwnI swihb dI qwbydwrI krdw hY aus dI hwlq ibAwn nhIN kIqI jw skdI[
The condition of the mortal who obeys the Lord cannot by described.
jykr koeI jxw ibAwn krn dI koiSS krdw hY auh mgroN pCqwauNdw hY[
If someone tries to describe he repents afterwards.
ijs nwl bYT ky r`b dy Prmwbrdwr dI dSw ilKI jW socI ivcwrI jwvy[
with whom to sit and write over (reflect) the state of God's obeyer.
jykr koeI jxw r`b dI qwbydwrI kry, AYsw ivrlw jIv Awpxy ic`q AMdr hI aus dI KuSI nU smJdw hY[
if some one obeys God, such a solitary being understands the bliss there of in his very mind.
Stanza 13
nwm iv`c s`cw Brosw krn duAwrw ienswn dy ic`q qy smJ AMdr eISvrI igAwq prvyS kr jWdI hY[
By truly believing in the Lord's Name Divine comprehension enters man's mind and understanding.
nwm iv`c idlI inscw krx nwl swrIAW purIAW dI igAwq prwpq ho jWdI hY[
By truly believing in God's Name the Knowledge of all the spheres is acquired.
sweIN dy nwm iv`c AMqRIv ieqbwr rwhIN bMdw mOq dy dUq dy nwl nhIN jWdw[
Through inner belief in the Lord's Name man goes not with death's minister.
jykr koeI jxw sweI dy nwm auqy Brosw Dwrn kr lvy, qd auh Awpxy ic`q AMdr ies nU smJ lvygw[
If someone puts faith in the Lord's Name, he shall, then understand it within his mind.
Stanza 14
hrI-nwm auqy Brosw r`Kx vwly nU rwh iv`c rukwvt nhIN vwprdI[
The believer in God's Name meets not obstruction in the way.
nwm auqy inscw r`Kx vwlw ie`zq Aqy pris`Dqw nwl jWdw hY[
The Name's believer departs with honour and renown.
nwm auqy Brosw r`Kx vwlw sMswrI rwhW Aqy krmkWfI Dwrmk rsiqAW qy nhIN turdw[
The Name's believer walks not on the ritualistic religious paths.
hrI nwm AMdr Brosw Dwrn krn vwly dw scweI nwl myl huMdw hY[
The believer in God's Name has an alliance with righteousness.
jykr koeI jxw sweIN dy nwm auqy Brosw Dwrn kr lvy, qd auh Awpxy ic`q AMdr ies nU smJ lvygw[
If someone puts faith in the Lord's Name, he shall, then understand it within his mind.
Stanza 15
pRBU dw hukm mMnx vwlw Awpxy Awp nU bcw lYNdw hY Aqy gurU dy is`KW dw pwr auqwrw kr idMdw hY[
The obeyer of the Lord's fiat saves himself and saves the Sikhs of the Guru.
jy koeI jxw sweIN dy nwm auqy Brosw Dwry, qW auh ies nU Awpxy ic`q iv`c smJ lvygw[
If some one puts faith in the Lord's Name, he shall then, understand it within his mind.
Stanza 16
cuxy hoey kyvl gurU auqy hI AwpxI ibrqI iek`qr krdy hn[
The chosen center their attention on the Guru alone.
ijnHW dI cwhy BwvyN koeI jxw vrnx qy soc ivcwr ipAw kry,
No matter how much someone may narrate and reflect,
bld auqy ikMnw ku boJ hY? jykr koeI jxw ies nU smJ lvy qW, auh s`cw ienswn QIvM\dw (bx jwdw) hY[
How much load there is on the bull? If some one understands this, he becomes a true man.
ies DrqI qoN pry Gnyry Awlm hn, Gnyry Aqy Gnyry[
There are more worlds beyond this earth, more and more.
auh ikhVI qwkq hY, jo aunHW dy boJ nU hyToN cu`kI hoeI hY?
What power is that which supports their weight from underneath?
vwihgurU dI sdw-vgdI hoeI klm ny swry jIvW dIAW vMngIAW, rMgqw Aqy nwm aukry hn[
The ever-flowing pen of God, did inscribe the Kinds, colours and names of all the beings.
qYnU jW qyry ielm nU ibAwn krn dI myry iv`c ikhVI qwkq hY?
What power have I to describe (Thee or Thine doctrines)?
jo kuC qYnU cMgw lgdw hY, EhI cMgw kMm kwj hY[
Whatever pleases Thee, that is a good pursuit.
Stanza 17
Axigxq hn qyry Bjn pwT qy Axigxq hn auh jo pRym nwl qyrw Bjn pwT krdy hn[
Countless are Thine meditations and countless those who meditate on Thee with Love.
Axigxq hn Dwrmk pusqkW Aqy vydW dw mUMh jbwnI pwT krn vwly[
Countless are the scriptures and extempore reciters of Vedas.
Axigxq hn AinMn AnurwgI jo pRBU dIAW auqikRstweIAW (vifAweIAW) Aqy boD nU socdy smJdy hn[
Countless are the votaries who reflect over the Lord's excellences and theology.
Axigxq hn XoDy ijhVy mUMh auqy lohy dIAW s`tW shwrdy (jW lohw KWdy) hn[
Countless are the warriors who eat steel with their mouth (bear the brunt on their face).
Axigxq hn cu`p krIqy irSI, jo AwpxI pRIq qy ibRqI pRBU auqy kyNdr krdy hn[
Countless are the silent sages who center their love and attention on the Lord.
qYnU jW qyry ielm nU ibAwn krn dI myry iv`c ikhVI qwkq hY?
What power have I to describe Thine doctrines (Thee)?
jo kuC qYnU cMgw l`gdw hY, auhI cMgw kMm kwj hY[
Whatever pleases Thee, is a good pursuit.
Stanza 18
Axigxq klk lwaux vwly hn jo Awpxy isr qy pwpW dw boJ cukdy hn[
Numberless are the slanderers who carry on their heads loads of sins.
jo kuC qYnU cMgw lgdw hY, EhI cMgw kMm kwj hY[
What ever pleases Thee, that is a good pursuit.
Stanza 19
aunHW nU igxq-rihq AwKxw BI mUMf (isr) auqy pwp dw boJ cukx dy qu`l hY[
Even to call them myriad amounts to carrying load of sin on the head.
SbdW rwhIN qyrw nwm aucwirAW jWdw hY Aqy SbdW rwhIN hI qyrw js kIqw jWdw hY[
Through words Thy Name is uttered and through words Thou art praised.
SbdW rwhIN qyrI igAwq Aqy qyrIAW auqikRsweIAW (vifAweIAW) dy gwaux gwey jWdy hn[
Through words the songs of Thy theology and Thine attributes are hymned.
A`KrW nwl pRwnI dy m`Qy auqy ausdI iksmq ibAwn kIqI hoeI hY[
Destiny is described with letters on Mortals brow.
pRMqU vwihgurU ijsny ieh prwlb`Dw ilKIAW hn, ausdy sIs auqy ieh nhIN hY[
But He (God) who scribed these destinies has no scribes on his head (His head bears it not).
ijs qrHW auh hukm krdw hY, ausy qrHW hI ienswn hwsl krdy hn[
As He ordains, so do men obtain.
qYnU jW qyry ielm nU ibAwn krn dI myry iv`c ikhVI qwkq hY?
What power have I to describe Thine doctrines (Thee)?
jo kuC qYnU cMgw l`gdw hY, EhI cMgw kMm kwj hY[
Whatever pleases Thee; that is a good pursuit.

Stanza 20
jl nwl Dox duAwrw ilbVy hoey krW pgW Aqy srIr dy hor ih`isAW dw G`tw lih jWdw hY[
By washing with water the dust of the besmeared hands, feet and other parts of the body is removed.
ipSwb nwl gMdw hoieAw hoieAw bsqr, swbx lw ky swP suQrw kr leIdw hY[
The garment polluted with urine is washed clean by applying soap.
gunwh dy nwl plIq hoeI hoeI Awqmw hrI nwm dI pRIq nwl DoqI jWdI hY[
The soul defiled with sins is cleaned with the love of God's Name.
kyvl mUMh zbwnI kihx nwl AwdmI nyk Aqy AYbI nhIN bxdw[
By mere words of mouth (statements) a man becomes not virtuous or vicious.
Stanza 21
jy koeI idl nwl hrI nwm nU srvx mMnx Aqy pRIq krdw hY,
Whoever heartily hears, believes and loves God's Name,
auh Awpxy AMdrly Drm AsQwn iv`c cMgI qrHW nhwky mukqI pw lYNdw hY[
obtains salvation by thoroughly bathing in the shrine within himself.
auqikRStqweIAW hwsl krn dy bwJoN suAwmI dI prym-meI syvw nhIN kIqI jw skdI[
Without acquiring the virtues, Lord's devotional service can not be performed.
myrI inmskwr hY pRBU nU jo Awp hI sMswrI pdwrQ Aqy lPz brHmw Awidk hY[
My obeisance is unto God, who Himself is the creator of world and Brahma etc.
auh s`cw Aqy suMdr hY Aqy prm And sdIv hI ausdy ic`q AMdr vsdw hY[
He is true and beautiful and rapture ever abides within His mind.
Aqy auh ikhVw mOsm Aqy ikhVw mhInw sI, jd sMnswr (rcnw) dw pswrw hoieAw?
and what the season and what month, when the creation came into being?
pMfqw nU vyly dw pqw nhIN BwvyN purwnw dI ilKq AMdr ies dw izkr BI hovy[
The Pundits find not the time, even though it be mentioned in the Puran's texts.
nW XogI, nW hI koeI hor, cMd dw idhwVw, spqwh dw idn, mOsm Aqy mhInw jwxdw hY[

One the world's creator (Brahma), one steward who gives sustenance (Vishnu) and one who has the disposition of destroying (Shiva).

Numberless are the earths and the mountains for doing virtuous deeds and numberless over numberless Dhrus, the instruction receivers.

Numberless are Indras, the moons the suns, numberless universes and numberless countries.

How many deities, demons and silent sages and how many over many oceans and jewels.

How many the mines of production, languages and many the dynasties of kings (or masters of men).

They, who are fully sewn in the Lord's admiration, abide there.

They, in whose hearts God abides die not and nor are they hood-winked.
