Hogwarts
The writer J. K. Rowling invented Hogwarts for her famous character Harry Potter. The school was founded in about 1000 AD. Its full name is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its motto is Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus, which means never tickle a sleeping dragon. It is the only school of witchcraft and wizardry in the United Kingdom. Its a boarding school for boys and girls from 11 to 18. The school is in an old castle in Scotland. The castle has a lake and a large forest, the Forbidden Forest, where dangerous creatures live. The castle is up in the mountains. Communications are unusual there are no mobile phones. There are letters and newspapers, but owls deliver them. When students first come to school, they have to put on a special Sorting Hat. This hat divides them into houses. There are four houses in the school: Griffindor (Harry Potters house), Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. The subjects at Hogwarts are a bit different from normal schools. Students have to learn magic subjects like Potions, Transfiguration, Defence against the Dark Arts, Care of Magical Creatures and Divination. When they are sixteen, students take O.W.L. examinations (Ordinary Wizarding Level). They can then study for another two years. Their leaving examinations are called N.E.W.T.s (Nasty Exhausting Wizarding Tests). The food is very good and the students really like it. Its typically British and the students favourite dishes are cakes, pies and sausages. Students often drink pumpkin juice with their meals. On special occasions like Halloween, they have fabulous feasts. Students at Hogwarts wear a uniform. This is a black work robe with a plain black pointed hat. Students also have a winter cloak with silver fastenings and there are dress robes for special occasions.
