REFRIGERATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY mi Lesson 8 Heat Pump Thermostats TE % = HEAT PUMP COURSE I 700-208 Caos After completing this Lesson, you will be able to: ® Discuss the differences between control strategies used for heat pumps and those used for other air conditioning systems. = List the advantages that low-voltage thermostats have over line-voltage thermostats in heat pump applications, = Explain the operating differences between voltage anticipation and current anticipation. = Describe how outdoor reset works to provide improved comfort levels, = Define droop. = Describe the procedure for setting an adjustable heat anticipator. = Explain the advantages of using two-stage and three-stage thermostats. = Discuss the pros and cons of using night setback in a heat pump application. = Explain how outdoor thermostats are used to match system output to the heat loss of a structure. = Describe proper procedures for installing a room thermostat. ‘© Copyright 2004 by ta Raigaaton Senice Engines Soca Lesson 8 (a ma = Heat Pump i Thermostats Pa stems commonly used in residential applications, The controls required by a heat pump system reflect that complexity. First and foremost, changeover controls must be provided because the same equipment is used for both heating and cooling. Proper thermostat switching is necessary in order to provide stable and economical control in both modes of operation ‘The use of multiple sources of heat is another complicating factor not found in conventionally fueled heating systems. The control logic that you choose must provide a means of using the most economical heat source while maintaining good comfort. Additionally, the controls must be capable of handling an ‘emergency heat source in the event of a heat pump malfunction. T: HEAT PUMP IS THE MOST COMPLEX OF ALL HEATING AND COOLING Some very complex circuits result when all of these requirements are combined into a single control system. For example, Figure 8-1 on the next page shows a wiring diagram for a heat pump system with controls for auxiliary heating. At first glance, stich a heat pump control system may appear overwhelming. But the individual requirements for each control function are logical and relatively easy to grasp once you understand their purpose. That is the reason for this, Lesson, which describes the various methods used to control heat pump systems. Control systems for heat pumps typically utilize low-voltage circuits. The variety and relative complexity of the control functions required indicate the need for a versatile and economical method of control. The number of interlocks 760-208
