Introduction to Head and Neck Surgery for 3rd Year Medical Students Students should page the Chief

Resident on Head and Neck Surgery before the beginning of the rotation week, for information regarding morning rounds on the Monday of your rotation. The name of the resident can be found on the Head and Neck rotation schedule located at the surgery website: http://www.surgery.ucla.edu/resident/ - Rotation schedules If you are assigned to the H & N clinic at CHS 200 Medical Plaza, Suite 550, please check-in with Judy Williams, RN. Goals of Clinical Rotation The overall goal of this rotation is to introduce you to the principles of evaluation and management of head and neck patients. You will participate in outpatient clinic and surgery settings, and have contact with both head and neck residents and attendings in each setting. During the rotation, you will be expected to gain skills in the following areas: A. Evaluation of Outpatients The head and neck patient often has a very focused problem. You will be exposed to evaluation and management of such problems. The H&P should be aimed at focusing on the specific problem and salient concerns related to the problem as the primary goal of the evaluation. However, many head and neck patients have multiple medical problems that will need to be addressed as well. These should be incorporated as part of your evaluation. Many of the new patients that you see will require surgery. Thus, a comprehensive H&P is still required. Your physical examination should include primarily a thorough head and neck examination. You will also begin to develop skills in the succinct oral presentation of pertinent points of the H&P to the residents and attending faculty. B. Diagnostic Aspects of Surgical Head and Neck Diseases By the end of the rotation, you should be familiar with a variety of diagnostic techniques in the field of head and neck surgery, and be aware of their indications, limitations, and risks. These included flexible nasopharyngoscopy, flexible laryngoscopy, direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy, fine needle aspiration biopsy, nasal endoscopy, sinus CT scans, MRI and CT scan of the neck, and biopsy of the aerodigestive tract. C. Surgical Treatment of Head and Neck Diseases You will have some exposure to outpatient head and neck surgery, and should become familiar with the preoperative diagnostic evaluation of these patients, as well as the basic instrumentation utilized for various procedures. You should gain knowledge of the potential risks of the surgery that you are observing, as well as the postoperative care and follow-up that will be required. D. Miscellaneous Head and Neck Tumor Board will meet every Wednesday from 1pm-3pm in the Head and Neck Clinic (200 UCLA Medical, Plaza Suite 550). Followed by afternoon rounds with the Chief Resident.
