Mobile Phone: Functions and Features

A mobile phone or mobile is known by different names such as handphone, cellphone, wireless phone, cell phone, cell, cellular phone, cellular telephone, cell telephone or mobile telephone. It is basically an electronic device with a long range applied for mobile data or voice communication across a network of specified base stations termed as cell sites. Other than the normal voice function of a telephone or a mobile phone, contemporary mobile phones are able to support a number of mobile phone accessories and extra GSM facilities like the following:

E-mail SMS (short message service) for text messaging Gaming Packet switching for Internet accessibility Infrared Bluetooth Camera with video recorder (camcorder) MP3 player MMS (multimedia messaging service) for transmitting and obtaining video and photos GPS (global positioning system) Radio Most recent mobile phones link to a cellular network comprising cell sites (base stations) and switching points held by a mobile network operator (excluding satellite phones that are mobile but not cellular). A mobile phone, rather than a radio telephone, provides automated paging from and calling to a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), full-duplex communication, handover or handoff at the time of a phone call while the user shifts from one base station coverage region or cell to another. A cellular phone provides broad area service and must not be mixed up with a cordless telephone that is a wireless phone, as well. A wireless telephone just provides telephony services within a restricted area, for instance, within an office or home by a base station and fixed line held by the subscriber. There are various types of mobile phones, starting from basic phones to feature phones like cameraphones, musicphones and smartphones. Features of a Mobile Phone:

Five Laptop Features that Matter Most

Laptops range in price and function from a simple $299 Netbook to a $2,999 maxed-out portable gamer machine. Unfortunately, buying one can mean deciphering technical jargon and comparing hundreds of specifications. Yet,

this complex task can be boiled down to just a handful of key factors, that aside from weight and battery life, are CPU, GPU, HDD, RAM, and some carefully selected, Extras. Follow our simple pointers to cut through the guesswork so you can choose the laptop that is best for you, your wallet, and your sanity.
1. CPU (Processor

Find a CPU that suits your type of use, rather than just opting for the most speed.

While it was once a matter of more = better, manufacturers now design processors not only for optimum speed, but also for different kinds of tasks. This purpose-driven development means that two processors of equal speed can perform differently depending on the type of work you are doing. If you anticipate some serious video editing or need to have lots of apps running at the same time (multitasking), youre safest going with the Intel Core i7. For everyday computing, the Core i3 or Athlon NEO X2 will suffice. There are many families of processors available, and each is tailored to a specific type of use. There is even a whole set of processors commonly found in Netbooks where long battery life is a high priority. To get a better lay of the land, have a read of our in-depth look at prevailing CPU technologies.
2. GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)

Fraught with positives and negatives; Assess your needs to pinpoint the right balance.

Graphics processing is a big factor in price, battery life, and performance. The main technologies are integrated graphics and discrete graphics. The average user, word processing and net surfing for instance, will be quite happy with the Intel HD Graphics integrated solution that comes standard on many laptops. However, HD movies and games call for more robust discrete graphics such as the Nvidia GTX - at a cost of reduced battery life and increased price. Some technologies, like Nvidia Optimus and AMD Hybrid, allow the user to turn the discrete graphics on or off depending on the planned task, but will likely exacerbate the price quandary.
3. HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

SSD is the next big thing, and so is the price. A standard HDD could do the job.

For a long time, the only real choice to make with regard to hard drives was capacity: The average user could save a few bucks by going with lower capacity, while the media-focused user needed to consider increasing storage. That changed when SSD, Solid State Drives, hit the market. SSDs have a sizeable speed, noise, and security advantage over their predecessors, but these come at a very drastic price disadvantage. For instance, we found a 500GB HDD suitable for any music buff priced at $199. By contrast, an SSD of just half that capacity will set you back $699. If your data storage requirements are on the low side and you have the bucks, we recommend you consider SSD, otherwise go with the highest capacity hard disk drive you can afford. Of course, there's always the "cloud."
4. RAM (Memory)

RAM can be a bottleneck or a floodgate. Buy enough, but not too much, yet. Tasks like editing video require moving lots of data around, which means youll need more RAM. If youre doing this kind of work, you may also consider DDR3 RAM, which can move more and move it faster than the norm, saving you time. If you are like us, however, and just surf Retrevo all day, 4GB of DDR2 RAM will do just fine. The key to look out for here is, upgradeability, or the maximum amount of RAM the system can accommodate. As time ticks by and your needs change, the ability to add extra RAM will extend the useable lifetime of your laptop greatly. Here's a tip; RAM is one of the easiest and cheapest upgrades that you can even do yourself. You can often save a few bucks on the initial purchase price and add memory later
Main Features Available Every feature is not available to every telephone extension. Each extension has been allocated a Class Of Service (COS) / Least Cost Routing (LCOS) in accordance with the request from the Head of School / Department. The COS / COR options are:

Class of Service (COS)

If an attempt is made to access a feature or service which is not available at that extension, the call will divert to the University operator. To Make An Outside Call Dial 9 followed by the number required. Speedcall Dialling Certain frequently dialled outside numbers have been allocated "speedcall" codes, i.e. four-digit codes beginning with digit 8, when dialled these codes translate into the appropriate public network number. A list of "speedcall" codes is included in the Communications Directory. Regular users of speedcall numbers should note that the four-digit speedcall codes merely abbreviate the dialling of other organisations' main switchboard telephone numbers. Speedcalls are therefore of use only to Cardiff University's central telephone system extension users. It should also be noted that some of the organisations have the same Direct Dialling Inward (DDI) facility that the University has to enable direct contact with extension users without main switchboard intervention. Telephone users are therefore advised to use known DDI numbers of other organisations, in preference to the speedcall codes listed, to achieve speedier connection and therefore more efficient use of the limited number of exchange lines.

Last Number Redial The LR button on certain telephones redials the last number dialled (internal or external). Callback When an extension is dialled which is busy or does not answer, callback will monitor that extension and call you back when it is ready for your call. When the callback activates, your extension rings with a distinctive interrupted ring. On hearing busy tone or failing to get an answer, dial callback code (1) and replace receiver.

To use Callback:

To cancel all Callbacks:

Lift handsets and dial callback cancel code (##1); replace receiver

Camp-On When an extension is dialled which is busy, you may "Camp-on" the line signalling the user of the extension called (with a warning beep) that you are waiting on the line. To use Camp-On: On hearing busy tone, dial Camp-on code (3) and stay on the line (NB DO NOT REPLACE RECEIVER).

To answer a Camp-On :

Either finish existing call and replace receiver (your telephone will then ring again immediately) or warn existing caller you wish to interrupt call, press recall, dial Camp-on retrieve code (#3).

To retrieve your fist caller, dial call hold retrieve code (#2) and resume conversation. Call-Transfer To transfer a call from your extension to another Press recall, dial extension number, replace handset (you may speak to the extension before

extension:

replacing handset).

To retrieve the call if the extension is busy:

Press recall

Conference Calls A Conference Call may be set up with up to 2 other telephones (7 other telephones if the conference call is initiated from an Optiset feature phone). Dial first number, obtain answer and press recall; dial second number, obtain answer and press recall. Each user dialled is placed "on hold". When all required numbers are held on the line, dial the conference code (*7) to invoke the conference call.

To invoke a Conference Call:

Group Pick-Up Group Pick-Up is a centrally programmed feature. Information may be obtained from the Executive Officer, Telecommunications.. Extensions which have been programmed into "Pick Up Groups" may "pick-up" calls from another ringing extension in the same Pick Up Group. To use PickUp: Lift receiver (of your extension), dial pick-up code (*6), dial number of ringing extension.

Call-Forwarding Call forwarding provides telephone users with the facility to divert incoming calls from their own extension to other extensions. Effective use of this feature will ensure that no incoming call remains unanswered. The call forwarding options are: 1/ Call Forward: Variable Destination : i.e. All calls are diverted from your extension without ringing it.

Lift receiver, dial "Variable Destination" code (*11) followed by the extension number to which the calls are to be forwarded. To cancel Call Forward Variable Destination Lift receiver, dial #11, ensure normal dial tone returns. 2/ To set up Call Forward : Preset Destination: :i.e. Unanswered calls to your extension are diverted to the desired extension Lift receiver, dial the "Programme Preset Destination" code (*21) followed by the required destination extension number. A confirmation tone is heard. To enable this programming Lift receiver, dial the "Preset Destination"code (*11) and replace the receiver. To cancel Call Forward : Preset Destination: Lift receiver, dial #11, ensure normal dial tone. NB: This cancels the activation of the call forwarding but the destination extension programmed is retained for further use unless changed by re programming.
