City Council Meeting Agenda Report

Item #______

Meeting Date: March 25, 2013 Subject: Opposition to Eliminating Wrestling as a Summer Olympics Competitive Sport

Recommended Action It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached resolution which opposes the elimination of wrestling from the Summer Olympic Games. Background/Discussion The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee has proposed eliminating the sport of wrestling from the Summer Olympics beginning in 2020. A final decision on the proposal will be determined by the entire International Olympic Committee at its scheduled general assembly in September 2013. The history of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece included wrestling as one of the original competitive sports and wresting continued to be part of the modern Olympic Games. Today, wrestling is recognized as a world sport with competitors hailing from nearly 200 countries across the globe. The United States Olympic Team has been a leader in the sport of wrestling, having garnered 124 medals in the history of the modern Olympic Games. Wrestling competitors and Olympic medal winners reflect a commitment to physical strength and agility as well as the development of character, self-confidence, self-discipline, courage and sportsmanship. The City of Daly City has a community interest in preserving and promoting competitive wrestling to provide opportunities for our youth to establish goals, work hard and overcome challenges to realize the dream of competing in the Olympics. Daly City resident and Riordan High School Senior, Zachary Contreras, is poised to pursue an Olympic dream, having placed 4th in the California State High School Championship, a first time ranking for our community. Thus, maintaining wrestling as a sport in the Summer Olympics has considerable value and impact for competitors in Daly City and throughout the world. The elimination of wrestling from the Olympics will bring an end to a well-established tradition dating to Ancient Greece and the support generated for this sport by citizens of Greek city-states. Conclusion It is recommended that the City Council approve the attached resolution opposing the elimination of wrestling from the summer Olympic Games beginning in 2020 and direct the City Manager to transmit this document to the International Olympic Committee in advance of its September 2013 General Assembly where a final decision on the future of Olympic wrestling will be determined.
