Damask Pattern

This stitch creates a light and open background pattern for a design when stitched with one ply of thread. Make sure you place the stitches firmly so they stay straight and not lean to one side as you move from stitch to stitch. I started using patterns like this when I designed an Asian fabric collage called Patterns of the Orient and have created many variations on this theme. *** This pattern can be used for clothing and backgrounds.

To stitch on the Mystery Project for 2009 Verify that you are stitching in the correct section by referring to the roadmap diagram here. This stitch is the background for the design. Before starting this section, stitch the collar and hem up to the couching, as shown in the finishing touches part also posted this month. AREA 11 STITCH 11 Center the pattern. I counted 10 threads up from the top of the furled fabric to begin. I have 17 vertical columns of the motifs and 13 rows of the motifs. Make sure you place the stitches firmly so they stay straight and not lean to one side as you move from stitch to stitch. Using 1 ply of B4, stitch the background of the design in this Damask pattern.

Work all motifs made up of horizontal stitches first and then fill in with the rest of the pattern. Note that the use of three colors on the following diagram is for clarity only all stitching is done in 1 ply of B4.
