Isotanks
The ISO tank container was developed for the carriage of all types of liquids, ranging from, but not limited to, potable (food grade) liquids, non hazardous, and hazardous liquids, including corrosives, flammables, toxics, and explosives. The tank container eliminates the risks in transferring liquids from one vessel to another, and provides for an extremely safe, secure, cost effective, and viable mode of transportation. Once the tank container has discharged, it is taken to a recognized cleaning station, cleaned thoroughly for that product, and then made ready for its next load. Although tank containers have a fairly uniform external appearance, the construction materials, linings, and fittings vary. Tanks are classified according to the specification of the tank shell and fittings. It is this classification which determines what type of product maybe carried. The function of the frame is to support and protect the tank as well as to facilitate the stowage, securing and handling by standard ISO container equipment. When properly handled, the frame is designed to cope with the stresses of a fully loaded tank. Parts of an Isotank

Bottom valve arrangement: Typically tank containers have 3 closures for maximum protection of product leakage. All ITT tanks are pressure tested before loading to ensure no leaks and all valves are operational. (click image)
Air Inlet valve: Fitted to the top of tank and used as a pressure device during unloading and a recovery device during loading. (click image)
Safety relief valve(s): A pressure (or sometimes a combination pressure/vacuum) relief valve is fitted to every tank to protect the tank against excessive over pressure or vacuum (click image)
Flame Traps: A metal gauze that is fitted over the SRV(s) when carrying flammable products. It permits to be expelled but prevents flashback (click image)
Frames: Iso dimensioned frames are typically fabricated from high tensile carbon steel and comply with ISO dimensions. (click image)
Cladding: The outer skin around the shell that protects the insulation from water. Usually made from GRP (glass reinforced plastic) or aluminum (click image)
Data/CSC plates: Shows many details of the tank container including current test data, the manufacturer and the permitted weight/capacity (click image)
Document holder: A sealed tube fitted to the frame of the tank for carriage of pertinent documents like COA (certificate of analysis), cleaning certificate, etc (click image)

Earth/Ground lug: A connection for grounding or earthing the tank during loading/unloading. Dissipates static electricity (click image)
Heating system: ITT tanks are fitted with efficient steam heating systems making the tanks useful for heat sensitive products (click image)
Manlid: Located on the top of the tank and is used to enter the tank for internal inspection (please be cognizant of confined space entry regulations). (click image)
Tank Number: Every container is identified by its unique 4 alpha and 6 numerical number. The check digit (7th number) is derived from a formula using the tank number (click image)
Temperature gauge: Is fitted to the rear of the tank giving an indicative reading of the temperature of the product (click image)
Walkway: Ladder and top walkways, for an easy and safe access to the top of isotank. (click image) Intermodal Tank Transport 2009
