How to change class There are two methods of changing classes in Awakening--Promotion and Reclassing.

Both require the character to be Level 10 or higher and the use of a special item. After a character changes class, their Level will be reset to 1, but they will keep all of their learned Skills. By changing class multiple times, characters can gain higher stats and have more Skills at their disposal. Promotion (via Master Seal)

When a character is Level 10 or higher in their non-promoted class, they may use a Master Seal item to upgrade to one of two promoted classes. Cavaliers can promote to the mobile and magic-resistant Paladin or the axe-wielding and sturdy Great Knight. Meanwhile, Clerics can promote to the axe-wielding War Cleric or the offensive magic-wielding Sage. For a list of available promotions, please see the class introduction page.

Reclassing (via Second Seal)

When a character is Level 10 or higher in their non-promoted class (or any level in their promoted class), they may use aSecond Seal item to reclass to one of three non-promoted classes (e.g. Cavalier). The classes a character can reclass to are restricted by the character's personality and upbringing. Furthermore, if the character is Level 10 or higher in their promoted class (or Level 30 in a special class), in addition to the non-promoted classes, they can also reclass to the corresponding promoted classes (e.g. Paladin or Great Knight for Cavaliers). Finally, I'm not sure why you'd do this, but when a character is at their maximum Level, they may also reclass to their current class again (e.g. Cavalier to Cavalier). The Dread Scroll and Wedding Bouquet items function exactly like Second Seals, but always reclass the character to a Dread Fighter or Bride respectively.

For a list of each character's available classes, please see the class sets page.

Avatar The Avatar is a special case, as he/she can use a Second Seal to reclass to every class (gender permitting), except special classes like Lord, Dancer, Villager, Taguel, Manakete, Lodestar or Conqueror. Example

In Kellam's case, he starts off as a Knight, so he can promote to a General or Great Knight by using a Master Seal, when he's Level 10 or higher. When he's a Level 10+ Knight or a Level 1+ General or Great Knight, he can use a Second Seal to reclass to a Thief or Priest or even a Knight again (and therefore access their corresponding promoted classes by using a Master Seal at the appropriate Level). Finally, when he reaches Level 10 or higher in any promoted class, he can use the Second Seal to reclass to any of the classes available to him.

All characters who can fight have a class. Characters can change classes by using a Master Seal to promote to a higher class or a Second Seal to reclass to a completely different class.

In general, children inherit all the regular class options from both their parents (so a lot of classes if one of their parents is your Avatar), except classes exclusive to the opposite gender. If a class option cannot be inherited due to gender issues, that option will be replaced with another option more appropriate for their gender. Despite being a Special class, Villager can be inherited by male children and both Taguel and Manakete can be inherited by Morgan. Regular classes: Lord (cannot be inherited), Tactician, Cavalier, Knight, Myrmidon, Mercenary, Fighter (male only), Barbarian (male only), Archer, Thief, Pegasus Knight (female only), Wyvern Rider, Mage, Priest/Cleric, Troubadour (female only) Special classes: Villager (can be inherited by male children), Dancer, Taguel (can be inherited by Morgan), Manakete (can be inherited by Morgan), Lodestar, Conqueror, Dread Fighter, Bride Note: This table lists the default class options, regardless of parent choice.
