During the various assignments, each participant will report to local Technology Center management and/or plant management and will be exposed to a variety of real-world, hands-on product and application engineering experiences. Each participant will be actively involved in a variety of new product development projects, product testing, product modifications and improvements, as well as cost-reduction and real-world product application projects. A strong set of engineering design and application tools are utilized, such as thermal and electrical modeling tools, proprietary computer systems for cable calculations, extensive fire-testing and high-voltage laboratories. In addition to these assignments, several multi-day classroom training sessions will be conducted during the two years for added training in our Lean Six Sigma methodology, supervisory skills, team-building, presentation skills, conflict resolution and other business-related topics. Participants will attend these classroom sessions with associates from our Manufacturing Training Program (MTP) and Sales Training Program (STP), as well as other high-potential General Cable associates. Here, they will have the opportunity to socialize and share their program experiences with one another as well as with General Cable leaders and plant management. Some of the programs will be conducted at the Companys corporate headquarters, while others will be held at a General Cable manufacturing facility. Participants who successfully complete the program at the end of the second year will be offered a full-time technology assignment at a General Cable Technology Center. Each ETP graduate will also be asked to serve as a mentor for the next two years for one of the new incoming Technology trainees.

Applying Your Engineering Skills & Understanding Wire & Cable Manufacturing
As a General Cable Technology Specialist, you will spend considerable time working with manufacturing associates at our various plants to improve our product designs and processes. It is essential that you have a thorough understanding of the General Cable manufacturing environment and how you may apply your engineering skills.

Our Manufacturing Process

Each General Cable manufacturing plant is different, but they also have many things in common. Ten of the 12 North American plants manufacture wire and cable with sizes ranging from 0.01 inch to one inch in diameter for insulated wire all the way up to six inches in diameter for three or more insulated conductors that are cabled together and jacketed. Generally, the smaller cable is produced at a communications plant, medium-sized cable at an industrial & specialty plant, and the larger cable at an energy plant. All of the cable-producing plants are very material-intensive, with an average of 70% of production cost in raw materials. Some General Cable plants draw their own wire from copper and aluminum rod to smaller gauge sizes, while others buy wire and fiber optic glass to exact specifications. Next, the copper, aluminum or fiber optic conductors are processed through high-capacity extrusion equipment, which first applies the insulation to the wire. For multi-stranded cable, the wire is then processed through a series of pairing and cabling operations, with the final assembly of wires being encased within an exterior jacketing process via a secondary extrusion process. Following the manufacture of a cable, the finished product is subjected to a series of extensive and demanding quality checks to ensure its safety and integrity. For larger applications, the finished product is shipped on large reels containing as much as 40,000 feet of cable and weighing up to 20,000 pounds. For smaller applications, such as retail sales and industrial distribution, the smaller gauge cable is cut to lengths as short as 50 feet, packaged and provided to major national retailers or distributors such as The Home Depot or Graybar for resale purposes. General Cable also operates one U.S.-based and two Mexico-based plants dedicated to assemblies operations. These locations receive cable from other General Cable plants for conversion into automotive ignition wire sets or other wire harnesses and assemblies. The cable is cut to length, terminated, put into the appropriate packaging and shipped direct to major automotive aftermarket retailers such as AutoZone or to major OEMs such as GE Medical Systems and Delphi. The typical General Cable plant is between 100,000 and 400,000 square feet, but one of our international plants is over one million square feet, and three U.S. plants are over 600,000 square feet. Most plants operate 24 hours a day, five to seven days per week, depending on demand. Our plants are a mixture of union and non-union, but labor-management relations are very good at all locations.

Our Manufacturing Culture

Manufacturing excellence is the bedrock of General Cables industry leadership and performance. Through our continuous, comprehensive and coordinated efforts toward safety, quality, productivity and service, we have identified three critical traits that are characteristics in our manufacturing plants: A common focus throughout General Cable on associate safety: Our Zero & Beyond vision guides a comprehensive view of work conditions, policies and practices with one constant goal zero accidents because nothing else is acceptable. An Operator-Led Process Control (OLPC) environment: General Cable leadership strongly believes that the correct way to operate a plant is to empower associates with responsibility and authority at the operator level. By providing substantial and ongoing training to our associates, we ensure that our operators produce the very best wire and cable products with minimal supervision and direction. The OLPC philosophy ensures an efficient manufacturing process that places emphasis on the value of our dedicated, trustworthy, well-trained production associates. Lean Six Sigma manufacturing techniques: General Cable has combined Lean thinking with proven Six Sigma tools under a common umbrella called Lean Six Sigma. We believe our integration of these progressive Lean Six Sigma tools is key to our competitiveness. We apply a variety of these manufacturing techniques throughout all of our plants in an ongoing effort to produce more with less and have no degradation of quality. Company-wide, we have certified Master Blackbelts, Blackbelts, Greenbelts and Lean Technicians who put Lean Six Sigma to work every day. The Company is dedicated to the Lean Six Sigma process, offering numerous internal and external training programs to our associates. Ongoing training is also provided to all our associates who wish to obtain Blackbelt, Greenbelt or Lean Technician certification status.
