LESSON NOTES FREEZE FRAME

This is a group drama activity which gives students practice in asking a variety of question forms. The situations are all connected with the theme of conflict. It can be done after Module 10 of Opportunities Upper-Intermediate Students Book. Materials: One situation card for each group (see below); there are enough suggested roles on each card for three or four students. Time: Twenty minutes. Preparation: Photocopy the sheet of situations and cut them out ready to give to each group. If you wish you could stick them on card so you can use them again in the future. Step 1: Divide the class into groups of three or four. Step 2: Give each group a card which they must NOT show to other groups. Explain the activity. Students have to imagine that the situation depicted on their card is part of a video and each student in the group is playing one of the suggested roles. They choose a point in this situation to press the imaginary pause button and practise their poses - hence the name freeze frame. When they are ready, students go to the front of the class and freeze in their poses. For example, for the tennis situation, one student could be crouching down (the ball boy or girl), one could be pretending to throw his/her racket down (an angry player) and one could be sitting on a chair pointing a finger (the umpire). The rest of the class have to ask yes / no questions in order to guess what the situation is, who the people are, what has happened, what they are saying and whats going to happen next. Students in the frame can only answer yes or no. Step 3: Groups take turns to pose in a frozen frame in front of the class. The rest of the class ask questions to guess the situation. You may like to limit the number of questions to about ten.
