CYCLING: Queenslands 2012 Under-19 Male Road Cyclist of Year, Dylan Newbery, will switch into team mode today for the start of the Tour de Perth. Fresh off his bronze medalwinning performance in the Queensland under-23 criterium championships, the promising Maryborough cyclist will make his first appearance for Team Erdinger Alkoholfrei Downer EDi Mining in the Subaru National Road Series. And the 19-year-old is keen to repay the faith shown in him by team bosses. The pressure is on in that department, no doubt, he said. Ive done other races with the team but this is the first tour and its always important to have a good tour ride. Its a good chance for me to show I have the endurance to back it up the next day and that Im not hesitant to do the hard work to get the team in a good position. The Tour de Perth is the first event of the NRS, Australias premier road cycling series, and

has attracted 155 starters from 11 interstate and international teams. Since recovering from a partially dislocated shoulder, Newberys training schedule leading up to the four-day tour has been intense, including climbing training to combat the tough, hilly 140km course on day three. Training has been a bit more serious and Ive started seeing a nutritionist to make sure Im not only eating correctly but also eating at the right time and working on recovery, he said. Im pretty happy (with my preparation) and excited to get the chance to ride for my new team. My role will be just to be a workhorse and get the other riders in a good position leading into the mountains. Im unsure how tough it is going to be because it is the first one of the series, but Im hoping I can carry my form from the state U23 criterium championships into this.

Tough test awaits paddlers

OUTRIGGER CANOEING: Fraser Coast Outrigger Canoe Club will head into next months nationals in good shape after their seven crews returned from the Brisbane Marathon Regatta at Redcliffe with five medals. The clubs master mixed long course and short course teams both blitzed their fields to capture gold, as did its novice women team, which included four first-year paddlers. Fraser Coasts under-16 mixed and U19 mixed also experienced success. Club captain Margaret Farrelly said she was heartened by their team spirit. The training and support we give each other, it makes a big difference, she said. Our mixed teams dominated both the short course and the long course marathons, which is a great achievement for a club to do that. Despite enjoying tremendous success at the weekend, Farrelly felt the crews would have to be at their best when they travelled to Mooloolaba for the national marathon titles. Were going to be racing pretty hard and putting some serious effort into training because at the national titles, everyone wants the medals and wants to win, she said. Were all very excited about Mooloolaba, but we cant be too confident. Weve all got to put in a good effort and its all about putting your best team forward and thats what well be doing.
