Storm Robotics Team
wins competition
The Lenape/Cherokee Storm
Robotics Team recently won the
regional robotics competition
hosted by the Lenape School Dis-
trict at Seneca High School. The
event featured 31 teams from
across the tri-state area. This year
the exciting competition required
scoring points by firing Frisbees
at slotted targets. The Lenape/
Cherokee robot was a highly ac-
curate shooter with long-range
scoring capabilities. The team
and its alliance partners were
able to score more than 1,200
points during the competition.
This victory was a historic win
for the Lenape School District.
The Lenape/Cherokee Storm
Robotics Team was also awarded
the highly coveted Chairman's
Award that recognizes the team's
outstanding contributions to the
community and the first robotics
organization. This award is the
highest award that a team can re-
ceive and is considered a great
honor.

School, AllState partner
for texting program
On Friday, March 1, Lenape
High School's Drivers' Education
Club joined the AllState Insur-
ance Company to promote a life-
time of safe driving. This is the
second year Lenape High School
has worked in conjunction with
AllState Insurance to run the X
the Text program during 11th
and 12th grade lunch periods. All
students were given the opportu-
nity to pledge to not text and drive
and to be distraction free while
driving. Health and PE teachers
Mike Curcio and Dana Cummins
are advisors to the club.
Community Service Club
receives $1,000 grant
Lenape High Schools Commu-
nity Service Club has been select-
ed as the first-place recipient of
the Burlington County Bar Foun-
dation's high school grant in the
amount of $1,000.
When club advisor Janet Bow-
ers read a newspaper article
about a Harrington Middle
School student who was making
blankets for cancer patients, she
knew she had to get Lenapes club
involved. Contact was made and
it was decided to do a Cozies 4
Chemo blanket-making event at
Lenape in November. The Com-
munity Service Club bought the
kits, and the LHS Fashion Club,
with advisor Chris Ferguson,
added their expertise. The group
completed 13 blankets in one af-
ternoon session.

The students enthusiasm be-
came the motivation to apply for
the volunteer grant from the
Burlington County Bar Associa-
tion in December.
In late January, the club found
out that it had been awarded first
prize and a $1,000 grant.
Because of the grant, another
Cozies 4 Chemo event is sched-
uled for April 23. Fifty students
are scheduled to make the no-sew
blankets, which will be donated to
youth and teen cancer patients at
CHOP and Cooper Cancer Center.

Lenape students named
as math contest winners
Lenape High School students
Tara Liu and Elizabeth McGinley
are the Lenape High School win-
ners of the American Math Con-
test. McGinley won the AMC-12
while Liu won the AMC-10.
The American Math Contest is
dedicated to the goal of strength-
ening the mathematical capabili-
ties of our nation's youth. One
way to meet this goal is to identi-
fy, recognize and reward excel-
lence in mathematics through a
series of national contests.
Students prepare for the tests
by practicing, working through
previous exams, by participating
in math leagues, and by intensely
studying math. Debbie Jenson is
the team advisor.

ts that time of the year. That time
when public school Boards of Edu-
cation are finalizing budgets and
announcing to their respective con-
stituents how much more they will pay
in school taxes next year.
We say more because its hardly
ever less.
Homeowners in New Jersey expect
to pay high property taxes, fueled in
large part by taxes from our local pub-
lic school districts. Its a way of life
that, while were not happy with, we
accept.
It seems each year that more and
more families are moving out of New
Jersey because of these high property
taxes, but those people usually dont
move away until after their kids gradu-
ate high school.
Overall, our states public schools
are exceptional its one of the main
reasons that so many families contin-
ue to raise their kids here.
So it should be no surprise and
shouldnt cause too much anger to
learn that New Jersey spends more per
public school student than most of the
country.
The third annual Taypayers Guide
to Education Spending released re-
cently shows that New Jerseys public
school districts spent an average of
$18,0147 per pupil in 2011-12. That was
an increase of 4 percent over the year
before, according to the state.
Yes, that is expensive. But isnt it
worth it?
New Jersey public school students,
as a whole, have some of the best test
scores in the nation. Whats that old
saying: You get what you pay for?
If you want good schools, you need
to spend money.
Can school districts throughout the
state do a better job of spending while
ensuring the best education possible
for students? Of course they can and
they should.
But high school taxes are, unfortu-
nately, a way of life in New Jersey, and
it will continue to be that way for quite
some time.
Property tax relief may be in sight
in the near future, but expecting to pay
what other states pay is unrealistic.
Frankly, we shouldnt want to pay
what other states pay in school taxes,
because we get what we pay for some
of the top public schools in the nation,
which help churn out some of the best
public school students as well.
School taxes are high...
...But so are our kids test scores. Should we really be that upset?
What are your thoughts?
No one likes paying taxes, especially
when they are as expensive as they are
here in New Jersey. But are you getting
what you are paying for? Speak up and
let your voice be heard on the subject.
Family waiting for three organ donors
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Mt. Laurel Sun
Mt. Laurel resident Charmaine Graven-
er has been waiting to receive a kidney for
the past year. But Gravener and her hus-
band, Chuck, are not just waiting for one
call.
Their children, Tyler, 8, and Charmaine,
5, have been listed for four years waiting
for livers as well.
Tyler and Charmaine have Progressive
Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis a ge-
netic liver disease that prevents bile from
draining. It builds up in the liver causing
progressive liver damage.
Both children experience constant itch-
ing as a result of the PFIC. There is also a
possibility they could develop cancer be-
fore the transplant.
To help promote Aprils National Give a
Life month, the Gravener family is partici-
pating in the 18th annual Dash for Organ
and Tissue Donor Awareness sponsored by
Gift of Life a nonprofit organization in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware
that is responsible for recovering and dis-
tributing organs and tissues to help save
and enhance lives.
This is the first year the family is partic-
ipating.
Graveners kidney condition stemmed
from a childhood disease and got worse
after she had children.
Last year I hit 20 percent function, she
said.
Although she works full time at West-
ampton Middle School, and is not on dialy-
sis, she still was placed on the waiting list.
For kidneys, longevity counts,
Gravener said, adding the list spans five to
six years.
The hope is I will be able to maintain
around 20 percent off of dialysis for the
next five years or so, she said.
Despite the discomfort and worry, both
youngsters are active.

recreation center since he was 5. He plays

Administrators in the Lenape
Regional High School District
have received the New Jersey
School Performance Reports for
the district's four high schools
Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee and
Seneca.
"Overall the results in the
state's reports reflect what we be-
lieve are our district's and each
school's strengths and areas in
need of improvement," Superin-
tendent of Schools Carol Birn-
bohm, Ed.D said.
The NJ School Performance Re-
ports evaluate school perform-
ance in three key areas: academic
performance, graduation and
post-secondary performance and
college and career readiness.
According to Birnbohm, three
of the four LRHSD schools met or
exceeded the target benchmarks
for academic achievement, with
90 to 100 percent of targets met,
which resulted in a comparison of
high or very high with schools
across the state.
The one exception is Lenape
High School, which did not meet
its benchmark in one area math-
ematics on one assessment, the
HSPA, for students with disabili-
ties resulting in a ranking of av-
erage when compared with
schools across the state and with-
in its peer group.
The Lenape Regional District
performed as expected meeting
100 percent of targets in terms of
graduation and post-secondary
performance. In the 2011/2012
school year, the Lenape Regional
District had an average gradua-
tion rate of 95.3 percent, the high-
est in Burlington County and
among the highest statewide.
This was reflected in the NJ
School Performance Reports,
where the graduation rates for all
of the LRHSD high schools ex-
ceeded 94 percent, well above the
statewide target of 75 percent.
Post-secondary attendance data
was also analyzed in conjunction
with graduation rates.
On average, nearly 80 percent of
the district's graduates who go on
to college are still enrolled in col-
lege 16 months after high school
graduation.
Birnbohm points to the dis-
trict's high average SAT scores as
one indicator of LRHSD's gradu-
ates' success in college.
"The average student SAT
scores at all of our high schools
exceeded 1550 in a five-year analy-
sis from 2008 through 2012," Birn-
bohm said.
According to the College Board,
a student with an SAT score of
1550 or higher is more likely to get
a B-minus freshmen year of col-
lege, helping to put them on a path
to graduate from college. The
LRHSD schools did not meet two
key benchmarks that, according
to the Performance Reports, are

Score of three or better
allows students to use
course for college credits
indicators of college and career
readiness the percentage of stu-
dents participating in PSAT and
the percentage of students taking
at least one AP test in English,
Math, Social Studies or Science.
"We were aware of our stu-
dents low participation in the
PSATs based on our own statistics
and observations, Birnbohm
said. "We have already put in
place a requirement for all college
prep students to take the PSAT at
least once each year in grades
nine, 10 and 11, beginning in the
2013-2014 school year."
Birnbohm emphasized that the
PSAT testing is included in the
current budget, replacing prep as-
sessments for the HSPA, which is
being phased out by the state next
year.
According to Birnbohm, the
low participation in AP tests is
not a true indication of LRHSD
students' participation in AP
coursework.
The district average of stu-
dents receiving a score of 3 or bet-
ter on all AP tests is 90.3 percent.
A score of three or better will
allow students to use that course
for college credits at the discre-
tion of the institution.
Although the NJDOE "is not en-
couraging" the reports to "create a
summative ranking of schools,"
the performance of schools in the
three key areas is compared to
schools across the state as well as
with schools within their peer
group.

Event proceeds go toward
organ donation education
baseball, basketball and soccer.
Gravener said she thinks his
favorite sport is baseball, but bas-
ketball is also a favorite.
It depends on the day, she
said.
Charmaine just started tap and
ballet class in September. She is
eagerly waiting for her June
recital.
Gravener said both children
know they need new livers. She
and her husband, Chuck, try not
to discuss their condition in
depth.
They will both tell you things
like . . . we cant go to Walt Disney
World until we get new livers,
Gravener said.
The family has come close to
both children getting liver trans-
plants.
Gravener said last February,
Charmaine was on the operating
table when the doctor had to stop
the surgery.
Tyler had just been released
from the hospital because of what
we though were gallstones. It
turns out he had a norovirus
which if she came down with,
two weeks post-transplant it was
up to 70 percent fatal, she said.
In November, Tyler received a
call but was second on the list.
As it turns out, it went to the
first family, Gravener said.
Tyler and Charmaine are still
waiting.
According to the U.S. Depart-
ment of Health and Human Serv-
ices, there are 3,337 people in New
Jersey waiting for organs, of
whom 222 are waiting for livers
and 3,013 are waiting for kidneys.
Since her children are treated
at DuPont Childrens Hospital in
Delaware, they are among 15
waiting for livers out of 448 regis-
tered.
Gravener said most dont real-
ize the impact an organ donor can
have on other lives.
According to Gravener, only 1
percent of deaths result in viable
organs.
There are not enough to go
around, she said.
God forbid the accident has to
happen the organs would make a
huge impact on our lives. You
dont wish for anybody to have an
accident, but if it does have to
happen, their organs would
change our lives and the lives of a
lot of people waiting.
Team Gravener has 45 to 50
people signed up to walk in the 3K
and a few running in the 5K on
Sunday, April 21, at the Philadel-
phia Museum of Art. Gravener
said more are welcome to sign up
for the walk.
The Dash for Organ and Tissue
Donor Awareness includes a 3K
walk, 5K run and a 10K run. All
proceeds from the event go to-
ward programs to educate the
public on the importance of
organ and tissue donation.
The 3K race starts at 11 a.m.,
the 5K starts at 9:25 a.m. and the
10K starts at 9:40 a.m.
To walk with Team Gravener
or to make a donation to Dash,
visit www.dash2013.kintera.org.

Team Gravener, visit their Face-
book page at
