NewsletterSummer2002 OurArabShelter
TheorganizationdealingwithpreventionofdomesticviolenceintheArabsectorinthecenterofIsraelhas joinedforceswithus.Consequently,wetenderedforsettingupashelterinanArabtown,tobeoperated byArabstaff. During20012002,23%oftheresidentsinourthreeshelterswereArabwomen.Thisindicatesthegrowing assertivenessofArabwomenintheirdeterminationnottoputupwithviolence.Itisalsoatributetoanew breedofArabsocialworkerswhoencouragewomenandenhancetheirassertiveness. TheAraborganizationmetwiththemayorsofseveraltownsexplainingtheprojectandthemayorsactually competedfortherighttosetupashelterintheircommunity.Ameetingwassubsequentlyarrangedatour Herzliyashelter,wheretheymetwithresidentArabwomenandboardmembers. ThemayorsofTaibeh,Tirah,KfarKassem,KallansewaandthedistrictofZemerwerethencordially hostedbyMs.YaelGerman,MayorofHerzliyawiththeboardmembersofL.O.togetherwithhighranking policeofficersoftheTaibehstation.Itwasanimportantmeetingduringatimeofpoliticaltension, indicatingthatcollaborationandcoexistencecancontinueforthewellbeingofthepopulationandinthe interestsofthewomenandtheirfamilies.

Alongawaiteddreamcometrue.We finallyreceivedfundingtosetupa clubroomandapsychologist'soffice onthegroundsoftheHertzliashelter. Theclubroomcomprisesalibrary, playstation,television.andvideo,also servesasalectureroomforgroups attendingdayseminarsandcourses ondomesticviolence. Theclubhousewasinauguratedwitha partygivenforourwonderfulhotline volunteersaswellastheresidentsof theshelter.Entertainmentwas providedbyhumortherapist,Dina Orr.Wewereleftwithasmileonour facesformanydays.

Women's&Children's Hotlines
SinceJonathanDavidson,ourchild psychologist,movedtoalargerfacilityon thepremises,thisallowedourhotline servicestobemovedtoabiggerroom, ratherthanthetinycubiclewhichhadserved themsowellforthepast12years.Whata reliefforDrInaPazin,whonowhaselbow roomandmoreshelfspace.During2001we had1544callsinHebrewand588callsin Russiantothehotline.(detailedinour statisticsonthewebsite). TheAdvocacyProjectforHerzliyaresidents requestingProtectionOrdershasexpanded torepresentWomeninFamilyCourts,RabbinicialCourts,policestations,hospitals.Adv.DannaSavorai, ofHerzliyaWomen'sAdministration,contactsInaPazinwhomatchesupavolunteertoaccompanya womaninneed. ManythankstoSeattle'sJewishWomen'sFoundation,foragrantenablingustocovercostsofour volunteersandadditionaltrainingcourses.

ThetownofHaderawasfortunatetobe'adopted'byaunitofnaval cadets,whopaintedanddidrepairstothepremises.KibbutzGan Shmuelinvitedthefamiliesforoutings,asdidtheHaderaMunicipality. RishonLeZionhostedthenewlyestablishedfamilycourt,whotogether withIlanaCohenofthewelfaredept.andRuthRasnicofL.O.metwith theresidentsanddiscusseddomesticviolenceproblems.

Children'sHotline
Thetragicmurderofa15years ofhighschoolstudent,Hadar Hershkovitz ,inabombblastin thecenterofHertzliya,resulted inmanycallsfromstressed parentsandchildreninthe Hertzliyaarea.Togetherwithour psychologist,weprepareda specialbrochureforallour volunteers,trainingthemtowork withtraumarelatedcalls.

Adelina'sthankyounotetotheHaderashelter
I am here at the shelter with my two and a half year old son.. Even before I arrived here I knew that I had to undergo gynecological surgery, but had nowhere to leave my child, since my husband is a alcoholic. My condition deteriorated at the shelter and the staff urged me to go for a check-up. The doctor who examined me told me I need immediate surgery and I was very upset since I have no family or friends in Israel. However, the staff and women at the shelter treated me like family members, showering love and understanding and looked after my young son. Today, two weeks after the operation, I am back at the shelter and no longer feel alone. I have discovered a wonderful, warm family and feel loved, protected and looked after. I would like to thank the women at the shelter, the volunteers and the entire staff for visiting me and helping me look after my son.
