Image Notes 1. Palanca que abre simultneamente ambas mitades de la tuerca (lever that simultaneously opens both halves of the nut)
Step 3: Base del segundo carro deslizante (Basis of the second sliding car)
This is similar to the main chassis, but smaller. Also has a threaded bar with its corresponding handle. The basis Is fixed on the veneer that covers the longitudinal sliding car, through a single screw, allowing it to turn a considerable angle, in order to work conical parts with ease.

Image Notes 1. Esta pieza es demasiado valiosa para ir a parar a la basura (this piece is too valuable to go to the trash.)
Step 10: Listos para la primera prueba! (ready for first test!)
The drill is located in place, although currently I don't use it as an engine but merely as a support for rotate the piece by hand. Guys, don't do this at home! The blade grinder is in the horizontal position because I find it more comfortable. As I have no design in mind in particular, may become "what comes out." It is for testing only. Moreover, the horizontal position does not produce drag the piece in the direction of rotation, which is VERY DANGEROUS.

Image Notes 1. Este trozo de pino estaba para usar como lea (the pine is not as easy as turning because it alternates hard and soft streaks. This piece of pine was to use as firewood.) 2. Todava debo aprender a usar el torno (I did this in a while, with the new configuration. I must still learn to use the lathe.).

Image Notes 1. Comenzando el trompo (beginning the spin) 2. Note que tanto el soporte del taladro como la contrapunta estn desplazados, para que el eje de giro est inclinado respecto al de desplazamiento longitudinal (note that both the drill holder and tailstock are displaced, so that the spin axis is tilted with respect to the longitudinal displacement).

Thanks for the compliment,Tinworm.
Latest data I have done some accessories for the lathe: a counterpoint, a plane chuck and another threaded for wood works. I will add photos to the instructable.

Jul 20, 2010. 8:34 AM REPLY Question: how do you keep the piece stick to the drill? just using bolts? this would not let ugly unwanted holes at the final piece? considering wood work...
rimar2000 says:
Jul 20, 2010. 5:48 PM REPLY Somewhere above I say that this lathe is by no means a finished piece. For the moment, it is as you say: the piece ends with three ugly holes that must be removed or refilled. Later I will make one more adaptable chuck. Thanks for your comment!
maurice1993 says:
Jul 21, 2010. 6:58 PM REPLY Rimar, this is sad. A option would be using a bracelet to hold the wood in place, but I dunno how wel it would fit. the piece could end up flying around and hitting someone pretty hard... plus, I think a little moster cutting would be more precisely, that saw scare me as hell... hehehe I may do one in future, as I like to work with wood, maybe I put a eletric 3/8'' eletric drill with a smaller cutter, or a saw with a smaller cut disk... fala portugus? ou s espanhol e ingls? anyway. nice job! PS: I dont know how a real lathe hold the piece stick.... if so, I could make something and tell ya... maybe with some research... g'luck finishing this. I wann to see the new updates =}

Jul 22, 2010. 6:50 PM REPLY Maurice, I speak only spanish. I use on line translators to write in English. Portuguese is easy to understand, it is more alike Spanish than English. I spent two weeks in Sao Paulo, and at times I did not realize that they speak to me in another language. Educated people pronounce the Portuguese very clearly, and one who speaks Spanish can understand almost everything. Now to the issues of the chuck to hold a piece of wood: there are plenty of ways to do it, you choose the one that suits you. Maybe you want have more than one chuck, for use according to the size of the piece. It is not the same turning a dish that a chess piece.

May 26, 2010. 1:52 AM REPLY thats a decent machine you made. to harden your drill-bit you could caseharden it. i dont know if you are familiar with this process or not but to do this you would put the piece (or pieces) to be hardened in a steel container full of bone charcoal, close the container with a steel lid, make sure it has a couple of gasventing holes (3mm in diameter is good, doesnt suck the flame back inside if flammable charcoal vapours catch fire during the casehardening firing) then to harden it, put the closed container in a bed of coals of a fire and feed the fire throughout a day, so that the steel container is red-hot throughout the time. when the container is completely cooled again, then the pieces of iron (the drill-bit) will have a thin coating on all sides of harder high carbon steel, which shrinks over the iron and makes it as hard and strong as steel but not as brittle because of the inner core of relatively flexible iron.
rimar2000 says:
Thanks for your explanation.
I had planned to use a little potassium ferrocyanide I retain from 30 years ago. Anyway, the main problem remains the lack of a forge, of which there are many interesting designs in Instructables. Sorry, this is the second main problem, first is that I have so many things on hand that I never make time.

Oct 23, 2009. 9:19 PM REPLY Fabulous Instructable, I am very impressed! I definitely wish copy your Instructable, as a lathe is so far out of my budget as to be over the horizon! Personally I like to bolt and when everything is OK to then weld and retrieve my bolts. My only negative comment is to request that you remove apologies regarding English, or lack there of. The translator makes it perfectly understandable and the brilliance of your creation speaks for itself! Make sure you hold out on those NASA guys and make the pay top dollar!

Dec 1, 2009. 1:36 PM REPLY Wow. This is great, Rimar. Do not worry about your English translations. They are plenty clear. Many of the native English speakers here write less clearly. Wow. (special thanks to google translator)
rimar2000 says:
Dec 10, 2009. 10:38 AM REPLY Thanks for the compliment, whiteoakart. Here in Argentina it is the same thing with spanish (castillian): many people speak it, but they don't know to write it. Professionals, too. I suppose all the world is equal in this.
pfred2 says:
Sep 1, 2009. 8:52 PM REPLY I'm learning not to weld. Bolting everything together helps me with making adjustments. I've ground out enough welds now. I think this lathe I made has 108 screws and bolts in it or something like that, and two welds.
rimar2000 says:
Sep 2, 2009. 4:29 AM REPLY Your lathe is more elaborate. I did the opposite way to yours, I worked all my life with screws and rivets, and recently at age 64 I decided to experiment with the welder. At first it was disappointing because I did have not a teacher and then it cost me a lot to learn. But now I'm very happy because welding helps to do things that would otherwise be impossible, or would take much longer, or be more costly.
pfred2 says:
Sep 2, 2009. 6:42 PM REPLY I must agree sometimes welding in indispensable, I had to weld some things on my lathe myself. But I avoid welding as much as I can too. I never know when I want to make a change, and welded up things are difficult to work on. That, and with welding there are always unavoidable distortions. I also concede the point you make about time too. I average about a part a day when I build something now. The lathe shown took around two months for me to make. It is a rebuild of a lathe that I welded together in a day! I had to repurpose the old headstock on the old version to another task so the whole machine had to be redone. For sentimental reasons I reused as much as I could of the old machine in the remake. I've a lot of hardware collected up, and a fair selection of taps and dies now too, so for me welding is the more expensive option. Gasses, electricity, and rods cost me money! Everything aside, for general fabrication I still prefer fasteners for their accuracy, strength, and versatility. For me it is worth the extra effort. I feel the results speak for themselves too. Picture of original, old lathe:
