A man who fled to Fiji after defrauding 17 individuals of almost US$1.5 million (FJ$ 2,654,980.03) in an investment fraud and marketing scheme involving early mortgage payoffs was sentenced to just over eight years in prison. This was for Aneal Maharajs guilty pleas to fraud and tax evasion charges, said Daniel G. Bogden, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada. Mr Maharaj repeatedly solicited victims through fraud and deception knowing that they would never receive the monetary rewards he pitched, said U.S. Attorney Bogden. Although he tried to avoid facing the reality of a conviction by fleeing to Fiji and causing the United States to extradite him, he was eventually brought to justice and will spend much of the next decade behind bars. Maharaj faces fine and jail time Mr Maharaj, 65, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan to 100 months in prison, five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $1,473,111 in restitution. Mr Maharaj received a greater sentence because of the significant loss amount and number of victims and because he obstructed justice by failing to appear for trial in the case and fled to Fiji to avoid prosecution. Mr Maharaj pleaded guilty on October 18, 2012, to one count of mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud, one count of tax evasion, six counts of bank fraud, and one count of making a false declaration in a bankruptcy petition. The beginning of acts Beginning in about 1990 and continuing to about October 2004, Mr Maharaj operated a multi-level marketing program from Las Vegas.

Filipe Tikoivavalagi appeared before the Nasinu Magistrated Court last week where he was ordered by to pay the fine within 60 days from his sentencing else in default will serve 25 days in prison. He has been given 28 days to appeal. Tikovavalagi was sentenced to one year imprisonment suspended for three years after being found guilty of willful interference with an asset of the Authority contrary to Sections 36 (1) and 27 (2) of the 2007 Water Authority of Fiji Promulgation.
Tikoivavalagi was convicted after admitting to the offence before Magistrate Sumudu Premachandra. He admitted carrying out the illegal act at his residence after a disconnection was made by WAF due to non-payment of water bills. The court heard that the accused between February 2011 and early October last year made a connection to the Water System of the WAF using a hose without obtaining prior written approval of the Authority. In sentencing Magistrate Premachandra said that the offence was serious and the court would take stern action on such offenders.
A 22-year-old former clerical officer of the Ministry of Finances Treasury Department fronted court facing 240 counts of forgery-related charges. Ilaitia Ravuwai appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza to answer to 240 counts put to him in court in the presence of his Legal Aid lawyer Lavenia Raisua. It is alleged that between October 5, 2012 and February 27, 2013, whilst employed in the salary section of the Finance Ministry, he fraudulently prepared and falsified Government payment vouchers and forged signatures of fellow Ministry staff to obtain money totalling more than $50,000 from the Permanent Secretary of Finances drawings account. Ravuwai was charged alongside four
other individuals who faced charges of dishonestly causing a loss. They are Lasaro Matasuka, 44, Taina Ratabua, 27, Asena Senibiaudamu, 56, and Peni Se, 21. Matasuka is charged with 26 counts of dishonestly causing a loss; Ratabua faces 17 counts of dishonestly causing a loss, Senibiaudamu is charged with 6 counts while Se faces 2 counts. The four individuals allegedly accepted the falsified vouchers from Ravuwai, and cashed the cheques on his behalf. Police prosecutor Josua Shaw has been given until April 22 to file and serve full disclosures to all five suspects. All accused persons are being held in custody without bail. Their pleas are yet to be taken.

Members To Benefit
MEMBERS of the Fiji National Provident Fund are expected to benefit from the fund's joint investment in Bemobile PNG Limited which has been finalised. In a statement, FNPF assured its members the investment will diversify members' portfolio. "Members will now have a wider asset base rather than relying totally on their investments in Fiji," the fund said. It added it would be a good potential for growth. "Members can now take part in the benefits of high economic growth potential in PNG and the Solomon Islands and members can share in the high dividends expected from this investment in the future." While there are risks also related to the investment, the fund said there was a sound plan to mitigate these risks. "Increased employment opportunities the investment will increase the opportunities for Fijians to be employed in PNG and the Solomon Islands. This is particularly so given that the Vodafone Fiji Limited will be managing the two businesses." This investment, which was negotiated purely on a commercial and independent basis with strict due diligence process followed, the fund added it shows the potential for longterm gains and further investment into the region. FNPF is pleased to be part of the development of PNG and the Solomon Islands communities in terms of mobile communications.

The Government of Papua New Guinea has opened its investment doors to Fiji. This message was relayed at the opening of the Fijian Trade and Investment Mission at the Gateway Hotel, Port Moresby, by Minister for Trade, Commerce and Industry, Richard Maru. He said that Papua New Guineas most promising long term opportunities for Fiji investors are in the manufacturing and service industries as well as agriculture, textile and garment industries. Tourism and hospitality is also our special focus, Mr Maru said. Papua New Guinea, he added, badly
needed dairy farming. If any of you want to come to set up a dairy arm in PNG, you are welcome, he said. He said that it is time that Papua New Guinea and Fiji stop relying on Australia and New Zealand. Their days are gone and we have to be now on the drivers seat, he said. Mr Maru said: As your Prime Minister said PNG is about to take off and for those who do not come and take advantage of many exciting and emerging business opportunities will miss out because PNG is fast becoming known worldwide exciting investment destination.
Bulk of the cases of illegal water connections recorded by Fijis Water Authority is in Lautoka with 54 cases. In a statement from the Water Authority of Fiji a review indicated that 83 illegal water connections have been recorded and the authority will continue to crack down on the issue. Of the total 83 cases, 15 have been recorded in the central division and 14 in the North. The authoritys legal counsel Talei Ligairi said they would take measures on anyone involved in illegal water
connections in a bid to halt the practice. WAF is serious about prosecuting those that have continued to illegally connect to the WAF water and wastewater system without permission, Ligairi said. We have noticed that despite numerous awareness campaigns people have continued to ignore the illegality of their actions. Last week, Filipe Tikoivavalagi a Nepani resident was fined $250 by the Nasinu Magistrates Court for illegally directing water to his home for four months in 2012.
THE average annual rate of inflation for the last 12 months stands at 3.6 per cent while the month-on comparable-month inflation rate stands at 3.3 per cent. "The All Item Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of March, 2013 registered an increase of 0.5 per cent over February 2012 (146.7) and stands at 147.4," Mr Waqavonovono said. He said the CPI which covers price changes in urban areas such as Suva Lami, Nausori, Lautoka, Nadi, Ba and

Filimoni Cola, 28, of Raiwaqa, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to obtain financial advantage by deception. He appeared before Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman who issued a stern warning to people who think they can commit the same offence. "This sentence should serve as a warning to others out there when you know what you're doing is wrong, refrain from doing it and do not take the risk," Magistrate Lakshman said. "If you take the risk, be prepared to pay the price." The court heard that on April 8, Cola tried to cash a bank cheque at the

Fijis Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources collected around $2 million of revenue from state land rentals in the first three months of this year. Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral resources Tevita Boseiwaqa said they are fine tuning their processes so they can better manage state land in line with governments expectations of making more land accessible for productive use. Boseiwaqa said this is part of a review system and processes put in place to monitor state leases. This includes developing an inspection report form for all our lease
inspectors in the various divisions, development of a standard operating procedure for state land dealings and harmonizing of our state land data to ensure it is consistent with what we have on the ground, said Boseiwaqa. He said this would add value to the decision making process and while some of their clients would be frustrated because of some delays they are hopeful the new exercise will bridge the gap. He also said poor policing of state land denied them the opportunity to generate revenue that could contribute to the nations socio-economic development.

Steel prices will be decreased by May 1, confirms Fiji's Commerce Commission. The new steel prices for grade 300 have been reduced by 3.14 per cent from $1908.71 per tonne to $1848.77 per tonne while for grade 500 have been reduced from $1975.47 per tonne to $1913.43 per tonne. While making the announcement, Commerce Commission chair Mahendra Reddy said the reduction in the price of steel provides major relief
to different sectors of the economy. Reddy said two weeks have been given for businesses selling steel to clear out what is on their shelves in order to make room for the new changes Attorney General and Minister for Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the three per cent cut in steel prices is positive news for the construction sector and the latest changes will be positive news for the Fijian economy. He also said the new change will be most welcome by the industrial sectors.

Patients visiting the Suva Private Hospital can soon expect extended hours of service. Malakai Naiyaga, Managing Director, BSP Life, said that negotiations are currently underway to have the general outpatients department open from 6am to 10pm. He said the current opening hours from 6am to 6pm has affected BSP Health insurance holders. However, they have been advised to seek the same services at other nominated health clinics. Mr Naiyaga said results from a recent
study show that patients tend to visit the hospital up to 10pm. The management and board of the hospital are working through some registration process with the government at the moment. Before the restricted hour of service was put into place, Suva Private Hospital patients enjoyed a 24 hour service. The hospital was launched in June 1999 as the countrys first full-service private health facility.

Fiji needs to be treated fairly and equally by the international community, says Attorney General Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum. Sayed-Khaiyum said while speaking with the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group (MCG) they discussed if Fiji was still willing to participate in trade negotiations. What we highlighted was that Fiji needs to be treated fairly and equally like everybody else obviously in a forum or in a platform where Fiji is treated equally like everybody else and Fiji would be happy to participate,
said Sayed-Khaiyum. The disengagement has not been on Fijis side and we highlighted particular for Australia and New Zealand about travel bans for judiciary members. We also highlighted how Australia has stopped ADB from giving money for infrastructure development and how the Bainimarama government has been focused with infrastructure development. He said the government is committed in having elections in a transparent and fair manner and it was always the goal to have integrity in the system.

Copyright Warning
ILLEGAL digital versatile disc (DVD) companies that are still in operation are reminded that it is a criminal offence to offer for sale pirate compact discs (CDs) and DVDs. Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive officer Premila Kumar said this was according to part III, section 29 (1) and 194 (1) of the Copyright Act 1999, where the maximum penalties included a fine of $50,000 and imprisonment for three months. Mrs Kumar said the council prioritised its market surveillance according to the number of complaints received from consumers on certain issues. However, she said they had not received complaints based on the quality of pirate DVD copies. She said no survey was conducted in this area. "The council is aware of certain police raids that have taken place in local video shops over the years. However, it is difficult to curb the problem of piracy entirely because of the many pirates operating from home and small shops," she said. She said these traders, called pirates, were encouraged by consumers who continued to purchase these DVDs and CDs without complaining as it was cheaper than originals. "This makes it difficult for the local enforcement agencies to prosecute and curb such issues. Consumers must learn to support and buy only original copies of DVDs and CDs to reward artists who entertain us through their creativity. "In most cases, producing any form of entertainment by the artist is a job which allows them to earn their living." She said the council would continue to encourage and remind consumers against purchasing pirate DVDs and CDs. She reminded consumers that there was limited protection in this area, making redress difficult should a consumer complain after purchasing a pirate DVD or CD. She said the council would not support illegal trade. Fiji Intellectual Property Office's head of Copyright Enforcement Unit, Terence O'Neill Joyce said this had been a problem for the industry over the past 20 years. In the lead up to World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, Mr Joyce said originality was vital for the protection of creativity.

BSP Life, the insurance arm of the Bank South Pacific Limited Group, has issued $35 million life insurance payouts for 2012. BSP Life has around 50,000 policy holders across the country. These announcements were made by managing director Malakai Naiyaga during the financial year results for 2012 at the BSP Life Centre. Out of this, an $18-million payout went towards insurance maturity where customers received maximum returns from their policies including accumulated bonuses. Payout for health insurance on the other hand was $4.9 million. Mr Naiyaga said that despite investment challenges posed in 2011, BSP Life retained the same level of bonus rates. Net profit after tax Net profit after tax was $10.1 million representing a nine per cent increase when compared to 2011. Mr Naiyaga said: Were delighted with the 2012 results considering the challenging investment and economic environment that prevailed. Investment performance in general was subdued due to limited new opportunities and the low interest rate environment. Low interest rates on investments On the downside, however, Mr Naiyaga noted the insurance companys investment portfolio was subdued due to low interest rates. About $140 million of our investments out of a total of $430 million is invested in government bonds. On top of that is about $140 million on cash on deposits, etc so that is a significant part of our assets. With the low interest rate environment, the return from the low investments are quite low and wed like to see the interest rates rising through an acceptable level . From our point of view its pretty artificially low, its needs to move upwards or much more for us as
an investor. From an investors perspective, if the interest rates rise then higher level returns will be seen. Asset growth BSP Life has over the years been diversifying its asset base, Mr Naiyaga added. Close to 30 per cent of our assets are now invested in growth assets with a significant part being in equity. As a result the good performance of our equity investments more than offset the downturn in fixed interest investments delivering positive overall returns. The companys operating performance remained strong for the year with added sales of $12.9 million for Life and Health insurance businesses he said. This represents a growth of 50 per cent over two years which is a fantastic result reflecting strong customer confidence in our brand. Group growth Mr Naiyaga added that the Bank South Pacific group company managed to increase by nine per cent last year. There was also a concerted effort in business retention and we grew our overall group in-force business to $60 million. Performance and outlook With exceptional results of last year the company is on track with as far as business for this year is concerned with announcements of major products and services in the making. A coronial inquest is examining whether a boy who died after ingesting dirt and rocks was adequately supervised. Nine-year-old Lawrence Betts died in April 2011 after collapsing at a care home run by the Community Accommodation and Respite Agency (CARA). The Adelaide inquest heard the boy had a rare congenital condition and intellectual disability and required around-the-clock care. Counsel assisting the coroner, Naomi Kereru, said the boy's favourite activity had been outdoor play but it was known he had a habit of eating dirt if left unsupervised. Forensic pathologist Roger Byard told the court he found dirt, stones and rice grains in the boy's stomach and intestines and a bowel obstruction caused the death. Professor Byard told the court symptoms of bowel obstruction could vary and it could be hard to detect warning signs in children, especially those with intellectual disabilities. "In some cases they seem quite well then can go downhill very rapidly," he told the court. "If a child has got intellectual disabilities
it can be very difficult to know what's going on until you observe vomiting, fever or he may have been lethargic." The court heard a carer had checked on the boy and he appeared to be sleeping, but when she went back to wake him he had developed uncontrollable diarrhea and was vomiting. It heard the boy lost consciousness and collapsed while being cleaned up in a bathroom. Ambulance officers attempted resuscitation and the boy was taken to Flinders Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead. Professor Byard told the court he could not be conclusive on whether the material the boy had ingested caused the bowel obstruction, but he said it appeared related. "I don't think you can say that soil and rice caused it on their own ... but heavy materials like stone, soil and rice increase the possibility of this happening. I think it's something that would worsen his chances," he told the coroner. "If the weight of the objects increases, it's more likely." Staff from Families SA and CARA will give evidence later.
AN Indian teenager has exposed India's "one month wives" sex tourism. The practice is increasingly popular in southern India, where wealthy foreigners on holidays buy one month wives for sex. While these short-term contract marriages are illegal they often have the support of local families, who service male tourists from the Middle East and Africa. Prostitution is forbidden under Islam and the short-term marriage is seen as a loophole, reports The Telegraph. Last month Nausheen Tobassum, 17, escaped from her home in the southern city of Hyderabad after her parents pressured her to consummate a forced marriage to a middle-aged Sudanese man who paid about $1,770 for her to be his wife for four weeks. The 'groom', Usama Ibrahim Mohammed, 44, was reportedly married with two children in Khartoum. Police arrested the groom, the victim's aunt and the Qazi - who had performed the wedding ceremony - and issued a warrant for her parents' arrest. Ms Tobassum is a minor under Indian law and cannot marry until she reaches 18. Her parents are now in hiding but will be charged with arranging a child marriage, 'outraging the modesty' of a woman, and criminal conspiracy. Police Inspector Vijay Kumar said the wedding certificate came with a 'Talaknama' which fixed the terms of the divorce at the end of the groom's holiday. Shiraz Amina Khan of Hyderabad's Women and Child Welfare Society, said there were up to 15 'contract marriages' in the city every month and that the number is rising. "They come to Hyderabad because it has maximum downtrodden families. Thirty to forty per cent of families are going for the option of contract marriages to relieve their poverty. It has to be stopped," she said. Nausheen Tobassum has filed a complaint to stop the same thing happening to other girls. "I didn't know what was happening and I agreed in ignorance. They forced me," she said. "They exploit girls. I had to show courage to go to police against my parents."
A 34.64-carat pink diamond has sold at auction in New York for nearly $38 million, setting a new record for Christie's auction house. Ahead of the sale, Christie's jewellery chief Francois Curiel said the gem was "one of the largest and finest pink diamonds in the world", with a "fabulous provenance". An anonymous telephone bidder paid $US39,323,750 ($37.9 million), or more than $US1 million per carat, for the stone from ancient diamond mines
in southern India. Dubbed the Princie Diamond, the pink gem was once owned by the royal family of Hyderabad and, since 1960, by the London branch of Van Cleef & Arpels. The exclusive jewellery firm originally paid 46,000 pounds for it, equivalent to $US1.3 million today. Previously, the most paid at Christie's for a diamond was $US24.3 million, for the 31-carat Wittelsbach diamond in 2008.

A desperate Indian father whose young child suffers from a condition that caused her head to swell up to an enormous size said he is praying for a "miracle" to save her life. Eighteen-month-old Roona Begum was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, in which cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, just weeks after her birth in a government-run hospital in remote Tripura state in northeast India. The potentially fatal illness has caused Roona`s head to swell to a circumference of 91-centimetres (36-inches), putting pressure on her brain. Her father, Abdul Rahman, 18, who lives in a mud hut with his family in the village of Jirania Khola, told a news agency he prays for "a miracle" that will save his only child. "Day by day, I saw her head growing too big after she was born," said the illiterate labourer who works in a brick-making factory. Doctors told him to go to a specialist hospital in a big city such as Kolkata in eastern India to get medical help but Rahman, who earns 150 rupees ($2.75) a day working in the brick plant, said he does not have the money to take her. "It`s very difficult to watch her in pain. I pray several times a day for a miracle -- for something to make my child better," he said. The US government`s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates about one in every 500 children suffers from hydrocephalus. The most common treatment involves
the surgical insertion of a shunt system to drain cerebrospinal fluid away from the brain and towards another part of the body where it can be easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Cases like Roona`s, where the head has doubled in size in a relatively short span of time, are extremely rare, according to leading Indian neurosurgeon Sandeep Vaishya. "It`s difficult to assess the situation without seeing the patient, but a surgery, even at this late stage, would give her brain the best chance it has to grow and develop normally," Vaishya said. Vaishya, who is the head of neurosurgery at the privately run Fortis flagship hospital in Gurgaon, a satellite city of the national capital Delhi, said that surgeries to treat hydrocephalus cases are "not particularly risky". Although the cost differs from case to case, he estimated that a complex surgery like this one would cost about 125,000 rupees ($2,300) and require a three-day hospital stay. Roona now is confined to her bed and unable to move her head but she is a playful child, quick to smile and giggle and is able to move her limbs, according to her father. She has outlived an initial prognosis by doctors that she would survive only two months. But her mother, Fatema Khatun, 25, says the little girl`s health is getting worse and that she urgently needs help. "She is deteriorating. She eats less and less, vomits often and I can see that she is getting thinner," Khatun said.
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has been farewelled at a ceremonial funeral in London. Thatcher, Britain's longest serving prime minister of the 20th century, died of a stroke on April 8 aged 87. The divisive leader held office from 1979 to 1990. About 700 soldiers, sailors and airmen lined the streets of London as her coffin was transported on a horse-drawn carriage from a chapel in Westminster to St Paul's Cathedral. Thatcher's coffin was applauded by thousands of people as it passed through central London, although several hundred demonstrators turned their backs in protest. More than 4,000 police were stationed along the route as part of a massive security operation. The Boston Marathon bombings led authorities to reassess security measures ahead of the service, and also the London Marathon on Sunday. More than 2,000 guests, including the Queen, attended the service at St Paul's to hear Thatcher's favourite hymns and bid her farewell. Former Prime Minister John Howard was in attendance to represent Australia. Commentators say it is the grandest funeral given to a British politician since the death of Thatcher's hero, Winston Churchill, in 1965.
After a bible reading from Thatcher's American-accented granddaughter Amanda, the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, said the point of the funeral service was to remember the person, not the politician. "After the storm of a life led in the heat of political controversy, there is a great calm," Bishop Chartres said. "The storm of conflicting opinions centres on the Mrs Thatcher who became a symbolic figure - even an -ism. "Today the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher are here at her funeral service. "There is an important place for debating policies and legacy, for assessing the impact of political decisions on the everyday lives of individuals and communities. "Parliament held a frank debate last week - but here and today is neither the time nor the place." British Prime Minister David Cameron, the leader of Thatcher's Conservative Party, also addressed the service. "She was the first woman prime minister, she served for longer in the job than anyone for 150 years, she achieved some extraordinary things in her life," he said. A handwritten note placed on a wreath of white flowers on her coffin read: "Beloved mother - always in our hearts".

A Colorado jury has awarded $US11.5 million in a lawsuit originally brought against helmet maker Riddell and several high school administrators and football coaches over brain injuries suffered by a teenager in 2008. The ruling comes as the company faces a similar lawsuit in Los Angeles, plus a complaint by thousands of former NFL players against the league and Riddell. Riddell said it planned to appeal the verdict but was pleased that jurors rejected allegations regarding helmet design defects. "While disappointed in the jury's decision not to fully exonerate Riddell, we are pleased the jury determined that Riddell's helmet was not defective in any way," the company said in a statement. It said it believes it designs and manufactures the most protective football headgear for athletes. The jury in Las Animas County found that Riddell was negligent in failing to warn people wearing its helmets about concussion dangers. The jury assessed 27 per cent of the fault for Rhett Ridolfi's injuries, making the company
The asylum seekers who claim they were heading to New Zealand, but instead arrived on a boat at the West Australian port of Geraldton, will soon learn if they will be sent back to Sri Lanka. Australia Immigration Minister Brendan OConnor made the comment today about the 66 Sri Lankan asylum seekers who arrived in Geraldton last week. The asylum seekers had undertaken the voyage from Sri Lanka of more than 5000km on a fishing boat. When they were guided into port after being intercepted by Australian authorities they were seen to be flying a New Zealand flag and waving banners
responsible for paying $US3.1 million of the damages. Ridolfi's family sued Riddell and his coaches after Ridolfi suffered a concussion in a Trinidad High School football practice. He wasn't immediately taken to the hospital and now has severe brain damage, as well as paralysis on his left side. Three people reached confidential settlements before Saturday's verdict, but two coaches were still defendants at the trial. Ridolfi's lawyer, Frank Azar, said Sunday that he'll ask a judge to find Riddell responsible for paying all $US11.5 million in damages. Riddell contends that the court erroneously excluded testimony from its warnings expert, though Azar disputed that. "I think this jury has said they're in very serious trouble," said Azar, who said he is representing between 10 and 20 former NFL players with complaints against Riddell. In October, a jury in Mississippi found Riddell wasn't responsible for an injury to a high school football player who had suffered a stroke after a practice.
saying they wanted to come to New Zealand. The 66 people, including some women and children, were detained by Australian authorities while they decided what to do with them. OConnor said the government made it very clear if the asylum seekers failed to meet the requirements of the United Nations Refugee Convention, they would be sent home. Very shortly, we will make an announcement about returning people home who are not refugees if that is the case, he told the reporter. Another boat carrying 75 people arrived near Darwin last week.
Air New Zealand has been ordered to pay more than $13,000 in legal costs to an employee who was overpaid $70,000. The Employment Court judgement comes after the court earlier rejected a bid by the airline to recover $42,000 in overpayments. Clint Foai, who held an administrative role dealing with employee attendance, accepted that he was overpaid more than $70,000 during a 16-month period in 2007 and 2008. But he said he had received the wages in good faith and had moved house, travelled overseas and got engaged as a result of the extra pay. In November 2010, the Employment Relations Authority initially directed Mr Foai to repay the net amount of overpayment - $42,635.40. The authority also ordered Air New Zealand to pay Mr Foai more than $9000 which had been withheld from his final pay to offset the overpayment. Mr Foai successfully challenged the determination in the Employment Court, which found in April 2012 that he had received the wages in good faith and had altered his position in reliance on those wages. He was also awarded costs. The court found Mr Foai had queried his pay a number of times and been reassured it was correct, but the
overpayments continued. Mr Foai told the court that as a result of the higher wages he had moved into new accommodation, went on overseas trips, bought gifts, decided to get married and bought an engagement ring. He said he naively thought his higher pay may have been because he was now mixing with senior management, including chief executive Rob Fyfe. "I thought maybe Rob Fyfe would have pulled, you know, some strings or something,'' he said. The airline sought leave to appeal against the judgement in the Court of Appeal but was declined in August. Mr Foai, through lawyer Johanne Greally, claimed a total of $30,774.63 for legal costs and disbursements, which was reduced by Judge Anthony Ford to a "reasonable figure'' of $19,500. He directed Air New Zealand to pay 66 per cent, plus court costs and photocopying, resulting in a total award of $13,355.55. Mr Foai's employment was terminated in 2009, with the airline claiming a fundamental breakdown of trust and confidence. The Employment Court judgement of April 2012 said Mr Foai had gained new employment as a court security officer with the Ministry of Justice.
The brother of a Palmerston North fugitive accused of attacking and abducting a prostitute in Canada has admitted falsifying details on a passport application. Kevin John Farley, 42, pleaded guilty to one charge of forging passport documents in May 2011 for his brother Michael. This allowed Michael Farley to flee New Zealand when he was due to be sentenced on a charge of perverting the course of justice. In the Palmerston North District Court, defence lawyer Jock Turnbull said he had spoken to justice liaison nurse Grahame Stillwell about Kevin Farley. Stillwell had said there were no mental health problems but suggested getting a psychological assessment. No summary of Farley's offending has been lodged with the court yet, but Judge Gregory Ross convicted Farley and remanded him on bail until June for sentencing. Until then he must live at his property in
Milson, Palmerston North, not leave the Manawatu, not obtain travel documents and not associate with his brother. Michael Farley, 39, has been arrested in Canada.

An investigation is under way after two explosions near the finishing line of the Boston Marathon left three people dead and more than 180 injured. The FBI has taken over co-ordination of what it described as a "potential terrorist inquiry". Boston police say officers are working around the clock and all leave has been cancelled. At least 17 people are critically wounded, officials say, and the injuries include several amputations. In a televised address, President Barack Obama vowed to bring those behind the attack to justice. "We will find out who did this. We'll find out why they did this," he said. "Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice." Although he did not use the word "terrorism", a White House official later said: "Any event with multiple explosive devices - as this appears to be - is clearly an act of terror, and will be approached as an act of terror." The first explosion came at about 14:50 local time (18:50 GMT) on the north side of Boylston Street, about two hours after the winners crossed the line. There was initial confusion and panic. Some runners fell to the floor while police and bystanders ran to help those caught in the blast. Then seconds later, a second explosion ripped into the crowd further away from the finishing line. TV footage showed bloodied runners and spectators being treated at the scene and the road strewn with debris. Rescuers tore down temporary fencing to reach the casualties. FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers also appeared, saying that the inquiry involved city, state and federal officials, but refusing to give any details of the
investigation. An eight-year-old boy was among the dead. Quoting a family friend, the report said the boy's mother and sister were also injured as they waited for his father to finish the race. Officers have already begun poring over video and photographs from the marathon. State police officer Roupen Bastajian had just finished the race when he heard the blasts. "I started running toward the blast and there were people all over the floor," he said. "We started grabbing tourniquets and started tying legs. At least 25 to 30 people have at least one leg missing, or an ankle missing, or two legs missing." A doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital said "several amputations" had been performed there. As a massive security operation swung into operation, the Federal Aviation Administration barred low-flying aircraft from within 3.5 miles (5.6km) of the site. Key sites in Washington DC and New York have also seen security tightened. Shortly after the blasts, a fire broke out at Boston's John F Kennedy Library a few miles away from the explosions. Police said the blaze might have been
caused by an incendiary device but it is unclear whether it is related to the explosions. The annual Boston Marathon this year had a field of about 23,000 runners and was watched by hundreds of thousands of spectators. It is held on Patriots Day, a Massachusetts state holiday which commemorates the first battles of the American Revolution in 1775. British police are reviewing security plans for Sunday's London Marathon, the next major international marathon, following events in Boston. Cooker parts, metal used in US bomb hunt US investigators have scrutinised two shattered pressure cooker bombs and even metal shards taken from the bodies of Boston marathon victims as they hunt the attackers. Ahead of an emotional visit to the city by President Barack Obama to honour the three dead and 180 injured, detectives are concentrating their effort on the two bombs that caused the carnage at the marathon finish line on Monday. With no claim of responsibility made for the attack, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it has launched a worldwide hunt for the attackers.
It has released photographs of the mangled metal remnants of a pressure cooker believed to have been used for one of the bombs which sprayed nails, ball bearings and metal pellets into the huge crowds. The lid of one pressure cooker was found on the roof of a hotel near the bombs, the hotel's owner told the reporter. Shreds of black nylon bags believed to have been used to carry the bombs have also been found. Doctors at hospitals where the critically injured were taken say ball bearings and nails taken from patients were being used in the investigation. George Velmahos, Massachusetts General Hospital's chief of trauma surgery, said the metal was being handed over to police. He said 12 nails were taken from inside one patient. Peter Burke, chief trauma surgeon at Boston Medical Centre, also said the metal pieces were being kept for the police. He said some of the nails were about five centimetres long. US authorities have thrown virtually every investigation agency into the hunt, with more than 1000 officers working in Boston alone, said Rick DesLauriers, head of the FBI's Boston office. DesLauriers said on Tuesday the investigation was "in its infancy" in a veiled warning that authorities expected a prolonged operation. Obama has condemned the attack as "an act of terror" and vowed that the attackers "will feel the full weight of justice". Armed National Guard troops and police patrolled Boston's airport, commuter trains and buses and authorities warned that tight security would last several days. About 100 of the injured have already left Boston hospitals but many remain in critical conditions.
Ohio Governor John Kasich has turned down a request for mercy by a condemned killer who says he intended to rape his girlfriend's 6-month-old daughter but not to kill her. Kasich's decision rejects arguments by attorneys for Steven Smith, who said evidence shows the baby died because Smith was too drunk to realise his sexual assault was killing the child.
Kasich's announcement Wednesday upheld a unanimous April 10 ruling against mercy by the Ohio Parole Board. The board said some arguments for sparing Smith, such as his turbulent childhood, were far outweighed by the abhorrent nature of the crime. The 46-year-old Smith is scheduled to die May 1.

Newly elected Canadian Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau is set to face Canada's Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper in question period. Mr Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, was elected Liberal Party leader on Saturday. His victory significantly boosts the party's prospects ahead of the next election in 2015, analysts say. The Liberals hold only 35 seats in the Canadian Commons, having lost second place to the New Democrats in 2011. Following his election on the first ballot on Sunday with about 80% of the vote, Mr Trudeau signaled he hoped to heal internal party divisions remaining after the party's bitter losses in the 2011 election under then-leader Michael Ignatieff. "I don't care if you thought my father was great or arrogant," Mr Trudeau said on Sunday. "It doesn't matter to me if you were a Chrtien-Liberal, a Turner-Liberal, a Martin-Liberal or any other kind of
Liberal. The era of hyphenated Liberals ends right here, tonight." The Conservatives wasted little time pointing out what they perceived as his weaknesses. "Justin Trudeau may have a famous last name, but in a time of global economic uncertainty, he doesn't have the judgement or experience to be prime minister," the party said in a written statement. In the Liberal Party leadership election, which followed an sevenmonth campaign, Mr Trudeau bested MP Joyce Murray, Toronto-area MP Martha Hall Findlay, former cabinet minister Martin Cauchon, Toronto lawyer Deborah Coyne, and retired military officer Karen McCrimmon. Mr Trudeau, 41, represents a constituency in Montreal. His father Pierre Trudeau, who died in 2000, led the Liberal Party from 1968 to 1984 and was prime minister for all of that time except during a short-lived Conservative government in 1979-80.

Rattle-N-Roll operator Maria McFerran pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death
A one-year-old boy who died at a Coquitlam daycare two years ago strangled to death after he was left unattended in a car seat, a Vancouver court heard. Daycare operator Maria McFerran pleaded guilty in September to criminal negligence causing the death of Arto Howley on Jan. 17, 2011. At the sentencing hearing on Tuesday morning in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court, the Crown prosecutor said McFerran was operating an unlicensed child care facility, Rattle-N-Roll. According to the agreed statement of facts read by the prosecutor, McFerran had six other children in her care at time of death, while she was legally only allowed two. She was warned of restrictions as early as 2005. Howley was put in a car seat that had the padding removed. The chair was then put upstairs in a room and the door closed. The child was left unmonitored, the court heard. According to the statement of facts, McFerran found him an hour later, with the strap around his neck, unresponsive. McFerran then lied to first responders, saying the child was sleeping in a crib and got a blanket wrapped around his neck, said the prosecutor. Parent's lives destroyed In their emotional victim impact statements, the child's parents told the court Arto's death destroyed their marriage and their lives. "January 22nd was supposed to be his first birthday party. Instead we were planning his funeral that day," said mother Victoria Howley, who is now two months pregnant. "It is hard to see children today. When I do, all I think about is Arto," she said. "Arto is not replaceable. I will never know how long he suffered." The father, Jeff Howley, said he was unable to work because of the emotional distress. "The moment I heard my son Arto died at daycare part of me died with him. I broke down to severe depression and anger which made me want revenge." Jeff said he moved to Alberta and still visits Victoria, but has been unable to recover from the loss. "Now with a new baby on the way, I can't be happy or excited about that Life sucks for me and I still think about killing myself every day." McFerran will be sentenced on May 27.
The number of Chinese travellers to Canada hit record in February of 29,400 trips, Statistics Canada reported Thursday. While visits from Americans continue to dwindle, China is taking up some of the slack, with the number of Chinese trips to Canada doubling between 2006 and 2012. Its fortunate timing. Trips from the United States Canadas most important market have ebbed, in part because the strong Canadian dollar has made visits more expensive. In February, they fell to almost 1.7 million visits, the lowest level in nearly two years. Back in 2007, by comparison, visits from Americans regularly surpassed 2 million a month. All told, fewer visits from the United
States outweighed more trips from overseas countries, resulting in a 1.5-per-cent decline in total travel to Canada in the month. China wasnt the only country giving Canada a boost in February visits from Japan, India and South Korea also grew. The United Kingdom is still the top overseas market to Canada, Statscan noted. However, this is the secondlowest number of travellers since May, 2003, it said. Meanwhile, Canadians continue to flock across the border, and to other countries. Same-day car trips to the United States have risen for four months in a row, which may reflect still-active cross-border shopping.
Vancouver is the best city in Canada for young women to find a sugar daddy, according to a recent breakdown of SeekingArrangement.com membership numbers. The international site is dedicated to matching wealthier men with "attractive, intelligent, ambitious and goal oriented" sugar babies. According to the figures, Vancouver has 3.86 would-be sugar daddies for every 1,000 adult males. Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary are second, third and fourth on the list. According to the site, the average sugar daddy is 38-years-old and makes about $271,198. "The term 'sugar daddy' is no longer reserved for the wealthy, older man.
Rather, it is a lifestyle embodied by single men who have a genuine, vested interest in adding value to their partners' lives," says Brandon Wade, founder of SeekingArrangement.com. "Last year, the number of single men joining our website doubled, reducing the number of married men who engage in this lifestyle." The average daddy spends about $4,307 a month on his sugar baby, or about 19% of his income. That gives you an idea of the gap between the reality of the Quebecois nation and its institutions, its political parties, and the incomprehension of the new Liberal leader of Quebec democracy." However, that version of events was swiftly disputed. Not only by Trudeau's

And that error was transmitted to Mr. Lisee and Mr. Lisee 'scrummed' on bad information," said a spokesman for PQ Premier Pauline Marois. "The request was to meet the three leaders -- but individually." As it stood, Trudeau did meet with the leaders of Quebec's two biggest oppostion parties, the Liberals and the Coalition for Quebec's Future. He did not meet with Marois; a spokeswoman for the premier said Marois wasn't available Thursday, but that she would welcome suggestions

Child Abuse
Why It Happens
Until recently, some medical programs designed to treat infants who are prone to sleep apnea supported the use of tactile stimulation as firstaid treatment when infants stopped breathing. Parents were instructed to shake their babies gently, then vigorously. Recognizing that parents of infants who are prone to sleep apnea are usually very stressed and frequently exhausted, and thus may be at increased risk of committing physical abuse. Parents DO NOT shake babies for apnea or for any other reason. Most instances of shaken baby syndrome occur because a parent or caregiver is frustrated or angry with a child, frequently when the child is crying. When a parent or caregiver shakes a crying baby, the baby may cease to cry because of the injury inflicted by the shaking. The caretaker may then associate such cessation with a gratifying response in that the infant ceases crying, causing the abuser to repeat the behavior. Less frequently, shaken baby syndrome occurs when the parent or caregiver throws a small child into the air vigorously, plays too rough or hits an infant too hard on the back, not realizing the seriousness of this behavior and the harm it can cause. Although the risk of shaken baby syndrome is lower in these situations, the danger still exists.
Anyone who takes care of an infant or small child parents, older siblings, babysitters, child care professionals should be reminded to never shake a child. Local community organizations can help parents improve their parenting and coping skills, and local departments of human services often can provide referral information for further assistance. If your patience is being strained from caring for an infant who cries continually, try these tips for soothing babies: Give the baby a pacifier after checking to make sure that he or she is not hungry or wet. Run a vacuum cleaner within hearing range of the infant. Take the baby for a walk in a stroller or a car ride. Put the baby in a safe carrier on top of a clothes dryer while it is operating (do not leave the baby
unattended). Simply hug and cuddle the child gently. Young infants can be held in a sling or front carrier that keeps the infant close to the body. If these suggestions do not work, and you do not think the baby is ill, place the baby on his or her side in a safe place, such as a crib. Take a short break, and, if possible, call someone to take care of the baby for a while. Information about shaken baby syndrome is not intended to make parents afraid to touch their children. Rather, it is intended to remind parents to take special care when handling children, especially those under 3 years of age. This information also tells parents that children must never be shaken for any reason. As long as a child is smaller than you, it is never safe to shake the baby, and it is better to err on the side of the childs safety than take risks. Specific questions about shaken baby syndrome should be directed to your physician or pediatrician. Check your local hospital for additional information on this subject, as well as information on support groups for parents with infants. Fatalities Due to Child Abuse and Neglect The tragedy of child abuse- and neglect-related fatalities has been brought into our homes with increasing frequency by recent media reports. There was two-month-old Tanner, who died of physical abuse at the hands of his young parents despite efforts by his grandparents to alert and prompt authorities to intervene even before he was born. And there was 14-monthold Demitri, who was tortured and starved by his male babysitter. Equally disturbing was the story of five-yearold Zachary who was fatally beaten after being returned to his father despite the fact that his father had a criminal record of domestic violence and drug abuse. And there was sixyear-old Elisa who died at the hands of her mother. Born addicted to crack cocaine, Elisa suffered a lifetime of her mothers abuse. At times it may seem that these tragedies are happening elsewhere and not in our own neighborhoods. However, child abuse- and neglect-related fatalities are not isolated incidents. Individuals across the country have become increasingly aware that children are dying because of abuse and neglect right in their own communities and at the hands of the people responsible for their care.

Your Health
Savitri Singh Carlson, BScN, MSN, PhD Asthma (Az-muh) is a chronic disease that affects your airways. The airways are the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs. If you have asthma, the inside walls of your airways are inflamed (swollen). The inflammation (IN-fla-MAY-shun) makes the airways very sensitive, and they tend to react strongly to things that you are allergic to or find irritating. When the airways react, they get narrower, and less air flows through to your lung tissue. This causes symptoms like wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), coughing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, especially at night and in the early morning. Asthma cannot be cured, but most people with asthma can control it so that they have few and infrequent symptoms and can live active lives. When your asthma symptoms become worse than usual, it is called an asthma episode or attack. During an asthma attack, muscles around the airways tighten up, making the airways narrower so less air flows through. Inflammation increases, and the airways become more swollen and even narrower. Cells in the airways may also make more mucus than usual. This extra mucus also narrows the airways. These changes make it harder to breathe. Asthma attacks are not all the same some are worse than others. In a severe asthma attack, the airways can close so much that not enough oxygen gets to vital organs. This condition is a medical emergency. People can die from severe asthma attacks. So, if you have asthma, you should see your doctor regularly. You will need to learn what things cause your asthma symptoms and how to avoid
them. Your doctor will also prescribe medicines to keep your asthma under control. Taking care of your asthma is an important part of your life. Controlling it means working closely with your doctor to learn what to do, staying away from things that bother your airways, taking medicines as directed by your doctor, and monitoring your asthma so that you can respond quickly to signs of an attack. By controlling your asthma every day, you can prevent serious symptoms and take part in all activities. If your asthma is not well controlled, you are likely to have symptoms that can make you miss school or work and keep you from doing things you enjoy. Asthma is one of the leading causes of children missing school.
What Is Asthma?
beverages (wine) A condition called gastroesophageal (GAS-tro-e-sofo-JEE-al) reflux disease that causes heartburn and can worsen asthma symptoms, especially at night Irritants or allergens that you may be exposed to at your work, such as special chemicals or dusts Infections This is not a complete list of all the things that can bring on asthma symptoms. People can have trouble with one or more of these. It is important for you to learn which ones are problems for you. Your doctor can help you identify which things affect your asthma and ways to avoid them.
It is not clear exactly what makes the airways of people with asthma inflamed in the first place. Your inflamed airways may be due to a combination of things. We know that if other people in your family have asthma, you are more likely to develop it. New research suggests that being exposed to things like tobacco smoke, infections, and some allergens early in your life may increase your chances of developing asthma. What Causes Asthma Symptoms and Attacks? There are things in the environment that bring on your asthma symptoms and lead to asthma attacks. Some of the more common things include exercise, allergens, irritants, and viral infections. Some people have asthma only when they exercise or have a viral infection. The list below gives some examples of things that can bring on asthma symptoms. Allergens Animal dander (from the skin, hair, or feathers of animals) Dust mites (contained in house dust) Cockroaches Pollen from trees and grass Mold (indoor and outdoor) Irritants Cigarette smoke Air pollution Cold air or changes in weather Strong odors from painting or cooking Scented products Strong emotional expression (including crying or laughing hard) and stress Others Medicines such as aspirin and beta-blockers Sulfites in food (dried fruit) or
Asthma control is about more than just treating symptoms. Its about managing your asthma so you have few or no symptoms in the first place. When you have asthma, you always have inflammation or swelling in the airways of your lungs. You may not feel this inflammation, but your lungs do. Uncontrolled inflammation (swelling) makes your airways more sensitive to asthma triggers like pollen, dust, and smoke. Exposure to these triggers can
cause constriction (tightening) of the muscles around your airways, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness of the chest, and coughing. Is your asthma under control? Do you experience asthma symptoms more than twice a week? Do you use asthma rescue medication more than twice a week? Do your asthma symptoms limit your activities? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may not be in control of your asthma and it is important that you talk to your doctor to determine if an asthma-controller medicine, like SYMBICORT, is right for you. When your asthma is under control, you can do more of the things you like to do with fewer interruptions due to your asthma. You should have fewer asthma symptoms throughout the day and night. And you shouldnt need to rely on your rescue medicine as much. Its important to remember, though, that because they arent rescue medicines, controller medicines should not be used to treat sudden symptoms. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled.

A compound that is abundant in red meat and is added as a supplement to popular energy drinks has been found to promote atherosclerosis - or the hardening or clogging of the arteries, a new study has revealed. The study showed that the bacteria living in the human digestive tract metabolize the compound carnitine, turning it into trimethylamine-Noxide (TMAO), a metabolite that in a previous study was found to promote atherosclerosis in humans. Further, the research found that a carnitine high diet promoted the growth of the bacteria, which metabolize carnitine, compounding the problem by producing even more of TMAO. The research team led by Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., Vice Chair of Translational Research for the Lerner Research Institute and section head of Preventive Cardiology and Rehabilitation in the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic, and Robert Koeth, a medical student at the Cleveland
Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University tested the carnitine and TMAO levels of omnivores, vegans and vegetarians, and examined the clinical data of 2,595 patients undergoing elective cardiac evaluations. They team examined the cardiac effects of a carnitine-enhanced diet in normal mice compared to mice with suppressed levels of gut microbes, and discovered that TMAO altered cholesterol metabolism at multiple levels, explaining how it enhanced the problem. The researchers found that increased carnitine levels in patients predicted increased risks for cardiovascular disease and major cardiac events such as heart attack, stroke and death, but only in subjects with concurrently high TMAO levels. While carnitine occurs naturally in red meats, including beef, venison, lamb, mutton, duck, and pork, it`s also a dietary supplement available in pill form and a common ingredient in energy drinks.
Your skin can be a crucial earlywarning system for a range of health problems, according to doctors. They said signs of brittle bones, diabetes and vitamin deficiencies may surface on skin before other symptoms appears, as reported. A study of 114 recently postmenopausal women found that deep wrinkles on the face and neck could indicate an increased risk for broken bones. The reason is that women with such wrinkles were more likely to have lower bone density in areas like the hips, spine and heels. Estrogen promotes the production of the protein collagen, which your skin and bones both rely on to maintain density. So as a woman`s level of estrogen declines in menopause, said Dr. Ronald Young, co-director of the Menopause Center at Texas Children`s Pavilion for Women in Houston, "collagen in the skin is depleted, which means the skin isn`t as firm and elastic, and wrinkles develop." Deeper, worsening wrinkles are a sign that the body is producing less collagen, which often means bone density is decreasing as well. The worse the wrinkles, the lesser the bone density, added lead researcher Lubna Pal, a Yale School of Medicine associate professor. "This relationship was independent of age or of factors known to influence bone mass," Pal noted.
If you discover thick, dark, velvety patches on folds of skin on your neck, armpit or groin, doctors suggest a
blood test to check for diabetes. These patches, known as acanthosis nigricans, could be benign or a normal side effect of obesity, but they also could be a sign of diabetes, said dermatologist Janet Lin of Baltimore`s Mercy Medical Center. Thyroid gland is responsible for hormones that, among other functions, regulate your body temperature, metabolism and nervous system as well as the health of skin, hair and nails. Signs that your thyroid isn`t performing properly-it can be either overactive or underactive-tend to appear first on your skin, typically on the back of your upper arms and the back of your fingers. At first the skin just seems rough or bumpy, like a mild rash, according to naturopath Alan Christianson of Phoenix. But if the thyroid continues to be out of whack, other areas can be affected, he said, such as the legs, scalp and neck. An underactive gland could result in hair loss, brittle nails or dry, flaky skin. If any such things happen, schedule a physical with your internist and ask for a thyroid function test, the doctors said. Again dull, dry skin or complexion could indicate an omega-3 deficiency, Christianson said, because its absence can slow your natural exfoliation cycle, also potentially leading to dryness or dandruff. Supplements are one option to restore omega-3, but the best way to correct the deficiency is through diet. The American Heart Association recommends eating a 3- to 4-ounce serving of oily fish twice a week. Flaxseeds, walnuts and soybeans can also help maintain omega-3 levels , it said.

The cast of SHOOTOUT AT WADALA is getting bigger by the day. The latest is that Jackie Shroff has joined the massive ensemble cast of the film. He will be seen in a cameo with Anil Kapoor and plays an ex Police Commissioner who was reportedly instrumental in the encounter of Manya Surve (played by John Abraham).
Anil and Jackie were the hit pair of the 80s having rocked in numerous films like 'Ram Lakhan', 'Parinda', 'Lajja' and many others. The actors are set to re-unite on reel after a gap of twelve years in Sanjay Gupta's Shootout At Wadala, produced by Ekta Kapoor. Jackie has worked previously with Gupta in Ram Shastra and Jung.

A Juhu birdie who perches on the closest tree branch around Akshay Kumar's house chirped with some hot goss. Soon after producer Sajid Nadiadwala went to town last week stating that Sajid Khan was not directing the third outing of Housefull, Khan called up Akki and told him that he too should not be a part of the project. `He told him that it was the two of them who had delivered the two hits together and it would be wrong of Akshay to act in the film's third part with another director. He felt no one else would be able to do justice to it, ` coos the birdie. Now wonder what Nadiadwala has to say about this twist in the ongoing Sajid versus Sajid drama.

The last time they got together it was for the film Andha Kanoon in 1983. And now Big B Amitabh Bachchan and Rajnikanth come together in a most unexpected way. They would both be at Cannes in May this year attending the Cannes Film Festival with their respective films. While Big B would represent his first Hollywood film The Great Gatsby in Cannes Rajnikanth would be unveiling the trailer of his new film Kochadaiyaan at the Festival. The film's co-producer Dr Murli Manohar confirms Rajnikanth's presence in Cannes at the same time as Big B. `It's a big moment in the history of Indian cinema. Rajniji is as excited as a child about the way Kochadaiyaan has turned out. Technique-wise it takes Indian cinema to another level altogether. Rajniji
has shown the rough cut of the film to his close friends. The other day A R Rahman saw the rough cut and was blown away. ` Kochadaiyaan will be finally completed on July 15. The release date is to be decided by the end of May. Apparently Rajnikanth has been advised against long air travel. But he is in no mood to stop himself from making that long journey to Cannes this May. Says a source close to the project, `He is adamant in going. He has become extremely frail. But whenever anyone mentions his delicate health to Rajniji he gives the example of Mr Bachchan who has braved the most serious illnesses and done exactly what he wanted and gone exactly where he wanted in his career. `
Salman Khan and his family are known to celebrate most of the Indian festivals. In fact some of his festive celebrations are attended by several Bollywood biggies. Jeetendra : Known As Jumping Jack Was One Of The Catalysts Of Indian Cinema Actor Jitendra was born on April 7, 1947 earned lots of female fans for him after
in Amritsar, Punjab to Amarnath and Krishna Kapoor, a business family who were involved in imitation jewellery. He did his schooling in St. Sebastians Goan High School in Girgaum along with his friend and eventual super star Rajesh Khanna, he then passed out his degree from K.C.College. Jeetendras first involvement with Bollywood came while his family was supplying jewellery for V.Shatarams movie Navrang where he was casted as Sandhyas double. Jeetendras first major breakthrough as solo hero came through the movie Geet Gaya Patharon Ne in 1964. He then started getting tons of offers, but he was always choosy about the scripts, as a result he delivered super hits like Farz, Suhaag Raat, Parivaar, etc. His popularity was at peaks in early 70s where he acted in movies like Caravan and Humjoli, he was known for his stylish dances in those movies and was called Jumping Jack by the fans. He in mid-1970s Jeetendra started acting in lot of remakes from south, especially from Telugu film industry. The strategy worked out perfectly for Jeetendra, he delivered lot of blockbusters like Justice Chaudhry (1982), Mawaali (1983), Himmatwala(1983), Jaani Dushman, and Tohfa (1984). Jeetendra was always considered as the family man, where he used to act in the movies that were pretty much melodramatic and sentimental. He
Rajesh Khanna in that era. He was only next to Rajesh Khanna in terms of movies that ran for over 50 weeks which was known as Golden Jubilee. Jeetu ji also shared an amazing combination with music director Bappi Lahari. Both of them are known for their record of delivering 12 consecutive audio albums that crossed silver jubilee in sales. He paired up with almost every top heroine in those days, his on screen chemistry with Jayaprada was very famous, they acted in 25 films together. Late 1980s is where Jeetendra faced lot of debacles as he ran out of good offers. He also could not find an ideal remake as Telugu film industry moved on from making flicks which were suitable to Jeetu Ji after action heroes like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, etc made their mark. Jeetu ji then started appearing in some supporting roles in early 90s and then moved away from the acting career and started concentrating on his own production company Balaji Tele films. He produced lot of TV serials in Hindi and Tamil and made some handful amount of Bollywood pictures. Jeetendras 40 year journey in the film industry can be scripted as a legendary one. He is definitely one of the pioneers of Bollywood cinema. Hope he continues delivering brilliant movies through his production house and entertain all of us.
When Katrina Was Angry With Ranbir! A birdie arrived from thanda thanda Canada with some garam garam gossip
Apparently Katrina Kaif was pretty upset with Ranbir Kapoor during an event in Vancouver. Kat was taken back to see Ranbir and Anushka Sharma indulge in some high-spirited revelry one evening. The birdie chirps that this is the reason why Ranbir picked up Kat from her home recently and the couple spent all night at his Pali home sorting things out. Hopefully by now Kat has cooled down! Hmmm... Meanwhile.... Ranbir Kapoor's recently released song Badtameez dil from Ayan Mukerji's upcoming film Yeh Jaawani Hai Deewani has already had over two million hits. Ranbir's dance steps are being compared to his late grand uncle - the late Shammi Kapoor.
Actor Riteish Deshmukh is busy with work and he says he is enjoying it."Shooting for 'Grand Masti' and 'India's Dancing Superstar' back-toback. Long hours, but enjoying being on both the sets," tweeted Riteish. "Grand Masti", a sequel to the 2004

Continued From Last Week Transportation speak a similar language collectively known as Maohi. The era of European exploration began in the 1500s when ships without outriggers began to arrive. In 1521, Magellan spotted the atoll of Pukapuka in what is now the Tuamotu Atolls and, in 1595, the Spanish explorer Mendaa visited Fatu Hiva Island in the Marquesas. More than 170 years later, Captain Samuel Wallis and the H.M.S. Dolphin was the first to visit the island of Tahiti during his journey to discover terra australis incognita, a mythical landmass below the equator thought to balance the northern hemisphere. Wallis named the island of Tahiti King George III Island and claimed it for England. Soon after and unaware of Wallis arrival, French navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, landed on the opposite side of Tahiti and claimed it for the King of France. European fascination with the islands grew as news spread of both the mutiny of Capt. William Blighs crew aboard the H.M.S. Bounty and of tales of tropical beauty and the warm nature of the Tahitian people. Knowledge of Tahiti and the South Pacific continued to grow as Capt. James Cook brought back thousands of illustrations of Tahitian flora and fauna as well as the first map of the islands of the Pacific. In the 1800s, the arrival of whalers, British missionaries, and French military expeditions forever changed the way of life on Tahiti and created a French-British rivalry for control of the islands. The Pomare Dynasty ruled Tahiti until 1847 when Queen Pomare finally accepted French protection of the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. In 1880, following the queens death, King Pomare V was persuaded to cede Tahiti and most of its dependencies to France. In 1957, all the islands of Tahiti were reconstituted as the overseas French territory called French Polynesia. Since 1984, a statue of autonomy was implemented and, in 1998, French Polynesia became an overseas country with greater selfgoverning powers through their own Assembly and President. With these powers, the country is now negotiating international agreements with foreign states in matters of commerce and investment. Culture The Tahitians of the modern era maintain their heritage and traditions of their Maohi ancestors. Oral history recounts the adventures of gods and warriors in colorful legends where javelin throwing was the sport of the gods, surf riding was favored by the kings, and Aito strongmen competed in outrigger canoe races and stone lifting as a show of pure strength. The
Tahitian culture is rich in the islands, welcoming visitors from all over the world.
Travel among the Islands of Tahiti Travel to the neighboring islands is short, convenient, and easily arranged. The domestic airline, Air Tahiti, is located at Tahiti Faaa Airport. Air Tahiti As the major inter-island airline, Air Tahiti serves 40 islands, including Moorea, with newer, twin-engine, jetprop aircraft. Flights to the neighboring islands depart from Tahiti Faaa Airport with frequent daily service between the most visited islands. Aremiti Ferry, Tahiti-Moorea-Tahiti Between Tahiti and Moorea, Aremiti operates the high-speed Aremiti Catamaran 4 which seats 495 passengers for a 30-minute one-way crossing. For transport of autos and passengers, the Aremiti Ferry crosses in 1 hour. Both have frequent daily schedules from the waterfront in Papeete to Vaiare, Moorea. Moorea Express, Tahiti-Moorea-Tahiti Between Tahiti and Vaiare, Moorea, the Moorea Express catamaran seats 306 passengers for frequent 30-minute crossings and the Moorea Ferry seats 300 passengers plus autos for 1 hour crossings. Other Ferry Transportation Other infrequent inter-island ferries are available but are not recommended as a transportation option for visitors. Tahiti History and Culture History Around 4000 BC, a great migration began from Southeast Asia across open ocean to settle the Pacific Islands. Many researchers conclude that Tonga and Samoa were settled around 1300 BC and from here colonization voyages were launched to the Marquesas Islands in about 200 BC. Over the next several centuries, great migrations to colonize all the Tahitian islands and virtually the entire South Pacific took place. This area of the Pacific ocean is now called the Polynesian Triangle and includes Hawaii to the north, Easter Island to the southeast, and New Zealand to the southwest. As a result of these migrations, the native Hawaiians and the Maoris of New Zealand all originate from common ancestors and
Marae The open-air sanctuaries called Marae were once the center of power in ancient Polynesia. These large, sacred, stone structures, akin to temples, hosted the important events of the times including the worship of the gods, peace treaties, celebrations of war, and the launch of voyages to colonize distant lands. Heiva i Tahiti In celebration of ancient traditions and competitions, the annual Heiva festival has been the most important event in Tahiti for the past 122 years. For visitors, there is no better place in the world to be during July than surrounded by this pure display of Polynesian festivity. Tahitians gather in Papeete from many islands to display their crafts, compete in ancient sporting events, and recreate traditional and elaborate dance performances. Tattoo The word tattoo originated in French Polynesia. The legend of Tohu, the god of tattoo, describes painting all the oceans fish in beautiful colors and patterns. In Polynesian culture, tattoos have long been considered signs of beauty, and in earlier times were ceremoniously applied when reaching adolescence. Music and Dance
The beauty, drama, and power of todays Tahitian dance testify to its resilience in Polynesian culture. In ancient times, dances were directly linked with all aspects of life. One would dance for joy, to welcome a visitor, to pray to a god, to challenge an enemy, and to seduce a mate. Dance is still accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as thunderous drums, conch shells, and harmonic nasal flutes. Modern Tahitian

The Buick Enclave is a pretty crossover vehicle that helped Buick usher in a new generation of vehicles and a new sense of style, back when it was new in the 2008 model year. Today, after five years on sale, it's still a strong seller, and it's grown more accomplished for 2013 with the addition of new features and with a more refined interior. More than halfway through its life cycle, GM's put some fresh touches on the Enclave, including an upgraded interior, some minor drivetrain and suspension improvements, and new infotainment and connectivity hardware, all in the quest to keep sales growing. We'd judge the changes a success, mostly because they don't tamper with the Enclave's goodness. That starts with the cleanly styled, curvy Coke-bottle exterior, which still looks contemporary, and now wears LED lighting and a new grille. The cabin's where the changes are more obvious: it's a full-on facelift, with new trim and materials that remove most of the hard plastics we've griped about, and replaced them with soft-touch pieces that finally merit the Enclave's pricetag. Specs remain the same for the Enclave's powertrain. All models have a 3.6-liter V-6, making 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, and it's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a choice of either front- or all-wheel drive. An updated six-speed automatic transmission is less shifty than before--that's good news, as the Enclave and its GM crossover companions often hunted through upper gears. Fuel economy remains the same, in the acceptable 24mpg highway range for a big crossover. Ride and handling are less obviously
Autos
massaged, but new dampers in front and retuned shocks in back don't disturb the Enclave's smooth ride or its reasonably responsive feel. It's still a vehicle that
"drives big," but it's never been one that's felt anything but predictable. The Enclave's crossover credentials make it a player, too. It seats up to eight

For Women
Rich in oil, walnuts make for extragentle sloughing. Blend 1/4 cup shelled walnuts, 1/2 cup olive oil (for extra emollients), and a tablespoon of honey (to seal moisture into your skin) in a food processor set on a slow speed, creating a fine-particle scrub. Standing in the shower (if you're scrubbing your feet) or over a sink (if it's for your hands), work the mixture thoroughly over your skin for a couple of minutes. Rinse with warm water. Oranges coconut oil (rich in moisturizing fats), and 2 tablespoons sesame oil. Apply the mixture to dry hair and wrap a hot, moist towel around your head. Relax for 5 to 10 minutes. Without wetting hair first, work in a handful of shampoo, then rinse and condition your hair. Apple-Cider Vinegar
Oatmeal
The best beauty fixes come from the most surprising places. Beer for your hair, anyone? Many of today's top spa treatments take their cues from old-fashioned home remedies, and there's science to back up the ingredients' effectiveness. Take a look at our favorites. Soothing and anti-inflammatory, oatmeal contains beta glucan, a soluble fiber that creates a thin, moistureretaining film on the surface of the skin. Place a handful of whole oats in a clean washcloth and use a rubber band to secure it. Next, immerse it in a sinkful of warm water and squeeze the bag four or five times. Once the water is cloudy, splash it on your face and then air-dry. (If you must towel dry, pat as gently as possible.) Avocado Oil
The fruit acid loosens dead skin cells. Cut a fresh orange in half and squeeze the juice of one half into a bowl. Add 1/4 cup granulated sugar and 1/4 cup olive oil and then blend into a moisturerich scrub. Next, rub the exposed side of the other half of the orange over knees, elbows, heels, and any other dry spots. Last, rub in the sugar mixture to slough off dead skin. Rinse with warm water and pat skin dry. Milk
The high acidity of apple-cider vinegar makes skin inhospitable to blemishcausing bacteria. Place a handful of parsley (a skin-clarifying herb) into a French press and cover it with 1/2 cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, then plunge and let the liquid cool. Transfer to a spray bottle along with a splash of vinegar and four drops of tea tree oil (an antiseptic), shake well, and spritz on a freshly cleansed face. Store the spray bottle in the fridge. Beer
Chamomile Tea Use this soothing beverage to make a calming compress. A natural antiinflammatory, chamomile reduces redness and puffiness around the eyes. It also soothes irritated complexions. Soak a clean washcloth in cool chamomile tea steeped to a golden yellow and apply to the skin as a compress. (To treat puffy eyes only, roll the washcloth to create an eye pillow.) Rest the compress on your skin for at least 10 minutes before rinsing and drying. Almond Oil This nut oil makes a great hand moisturizer. With a light texture and loads of vitamin E, almond oil quickly penetrates dry skin and protects hands and nails from environmental damage. Rub 1 teaspoon of oil into hands and cuticles. Wrap each hand in a small towel, and allow the oil to penetrate for at least 5 minutes. Wipe the excess oil off hands, but don't rinse them; any remaining oil will be absorbed over the next few minutes. Follow with a rich hand cream. Kiwi
Avocado oil's abundant fatty acids help balance skin's moisture levels, and the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E protect skin from further damage. Combine equal parts avocado oil and evening-primrose oil (which supports collagen synthesis with its gamma linoleic acid) in a sealable bottle and shake to blend. Massage five or six drops into clean skin, and then cover your face with a warm washcloth for a minute to help the oils sink in. Walnuts
The lactic acid in milk serves as a gentle skin exfoliant, while its natural fat content acts as a body moisturizer. Add a gallon of whole milk to a tubful of warm water and soak. It's a great alternative to sugar and salt scrubs, which may be too abrasive for people who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, or sensitive skin. If you prefer a fragranced bath, add 10 to 20 drops of an essential oil, such as lavender. Eggs
Eggs' high protein content helps improve hair's resilience and luster. Whisk together 1 egg, 2 tablespoons
Yeast and hops help to swell the hair shaft and plump the cuticle, adding volume. The acidity of the beer helps remove built-up product residue. In the shower, after you've shampooed, pour a bottle of beer over your hair. Rinse briefly with fresh water (the idea is to avoid the Eau de Barfly effect while retaining the beer's body-boosting benefits). A rich beer with a high yeast content works best. (No light beer.) Sour Cream This thick dairy product makes a moisturizing mask and gentle exfoliant, since its lactic acid (an alpha-hydroxy acid) helps speed cell turnover, brightening dull complexions. Natural fats restore skin's moisture. Using your fingers, smooth 1 to 2 tablespoons of cool, full-fat sour cream in a thin layer over your clean face and neck, avoiding the eye and lip areas. Wait 7 to 10 minutes, then remove the mask with a wet washcloth. Splash skin with warm water and pat dry.
The high vitamin C levels in kiwi fight free-radical damage and even out skin texture. When scrubbed on the face, the seeds act as tiny exfoliators, leaving skin smooth. Peel and slice a ripe kiwi, then mash the flesh thoroughly with a fork. With circular motions, work the kiwi paste onto a damp, clean complexion, avoiding the eye and lip areas. After 30 to 60 seconds of scrubbing, rinse skin with warm water and pat dry. Olive Oil
Rich in vitamin E and fatty acids, olive oil is a Mediterranean-inspired favorite for moisturizing brittle and overstyled hair. Before showering, comb several tablespoons of "light" olive oil (it will say so on the label) through hair, working from roots to ends. Cover hair with a shower cap. After showering for 5 to 7 minutes, remove the cap. Shampoo, rinse, and condition as usual. Hair will feel super soft.

Anupam Kher receives The Asian Award in London along with Sir Ben Kingsley Anupam Kher added yet another feather to his cap recently after becoming the new recipient of The Asian Award in London. The veteran actor picked up his trophy at the third edition of the awards gala at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Tuesday. The others who also received the coveted award were Sir Ben Kingsley and singer Nicole Scherzinger while the late Hollywood legend Bruce Lee received the honour posthumously. Kher was awarded in the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema category. The actor has made several outings in Western cinema, most recently with Silver Linings Playbook and is also an ambassador for Asians in world cinema. Says Kher, `As an actor all we want is to make people laugh, cry and persuade many other emotions by our craft. Our achievement at the end of the day comes when the audience really understands what we are doing. It is also an honour to be given this award in the same year as Sir Ben Kingsley.`

Veteran MMA referee Josh Rosenthal awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute. One year ago, federal agents raided an Oakland, Calif., warehouse owned by Rosenthal and an associate that contained 1,356 marijuana plants, according to a copy of the agreement, which MMAjunkie.com (www. mmajunkie.com) obtained from the U.S. District Attorney's office in Oakland. The drug's street value was estimated at more than $6 million. Rosenthal is due in U.S. District Court on May 17. The government is recommending 37 months in jail, fines and five years of probation, during which he would be subject to random searches, according to the agreement. Without a deal, he faced 10 years to life in prison, a $10 million fine and a minimum of five years' probation. However, the court ultimately will decide Rosenthal's sentence. Rosenthal, who agreed to a plea deal in January, did not respond to request for comment. His lawyer of record, Ted W. Cassman, was unavailable for comment. A jiu-jitsu practitioner and martial
artist, Rosenthal has officiated dozens of high-profile bouts in the UFC, including a heavyweight title fight at UFC 116 between then-champ Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. The Nevada State Athletic Commission chose Rosenthal after Lesnar and UFC officials objected to veteran ref Steve Mazzagatti getting the assignment. After the fight, UFC President Dana White praised Rosenthal's restraint in the bout's first round, when Carwin unleashed a flurry of punches upon the downed Lesnar. The now-retired Lesnar went on to win the bout via second-round submission. As of late, Rosenthal has been conspicuously absent from major MMA events. Earlier this month, he gave an interview to website BloodyElbow. com in which he said his absence was the result of a staph infection. He said he would be officiating an event in May and made no mention of legal trouble.
Elenoa Kunatuba has been relieved from her position as Fijiana coach. Fiji Rugby Union High Performance manager Mike Ryan confirmed the news. He also confirmed the appointment of Namosi XVs coach and former Fiji 7s coach Timoci Wainiqolo as the new Fijiana mentor. Wainiqolo has accepted the appointment and will be working alongside Franck Boivert and Kunatuba to assemble the team for the Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow, Russia in June. Ryan said the change was called for to ensure women's rugby was headed in a new direction."
We undertook a full comprehensive review of the trip to China and she has done a wonderful job, but we need someone that has not been closely involved with the team for such a long time, Ryan said. He said that the team needed to be more professional and embrace the concept of sports science. Their preparation to China was not what you would expect from a high performance national side where all those tactical developments need to be embedded in rugby at that high level, Ryan said. Kunatuba remains as Oceania Rugby womens development officer.

FIFA Investigator Among Americans Barred From Russia In Rights Dispute The chief investigator examining
allegations of wrongdoing in soccer including the bidding process for the 2018 World Cup in Russia is one of 18 people on a list of Americans barred from entering Russia over what Moscow says are human rights abuses. Michael Garcia, a former U.S. federal prosecutor who now works for soccers world governing body, FIFA, is on the blacklist published by Russias Foreign Ministry after Washington named 18 Russians barred from entering the United States for alleged rights abuses. It was not immediately clear whether his blacklisting could affect Russias hosting of the soccer World Cup in 2018. As a U.S. attorney, Garcia was involved in the successful effort to arrest and try Viktor Bout, a Russian who was long wanted by U.S. authorities on suspicion of arms trafficking. Bout is serving a 25-year jail term in the United States. Garcia, whose past responsibilities have also included enforcing arms regulations and money laundering statutes, was elected last July to investigate allegations of corruption as head of the investigative chamber of FIFAs ethics committee. He did not immediately respond to

FIFA President Sepp Blatter (L) and Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko emails requesting comment. The joint bidding process to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, won by Russia and Qatar, has been tainted by a corruption scandal after a number of high-ranking FIFA officials were banned for breaching the bodys ethics code. FIFA said in January the ethics committee would conduct a thorough review of allegations about the process. The Russian Foreign Ministry could not immediately be reached for comment. U.S. President Barack Obamas administration last Friday issued a list of 18 Russians subject to visa bans and
asset freezes in the United States under the Magnitsky Act legislation passed by Congress late last year. Russias list was issued under a retaliatory law President Vladimir Putin signed in December. Garcia, a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, was among Americans the Foreign Ministry said had violated the human rights of Russians abroad. In 2008, Garcia announced Bouts arrest in Thailand. Bout was extradited and was sentenced in April 2012 after a Manhattan jury convicted him on charges that he agreed to sell arms to people he thought were militants intent on attacking American soldiers in Colombia. Russia vociferously protested the extradition of Bout - who is the subject of a book called Merchant of Death and inspiration for the film Lord of War starring Nicolas Cage - and says he was convicted on unreliable evidence. Bout had lived untroubled in Russia, frustrating U.S. officials seeking his prosecution, before he was lured to Bangkok and seized in a sting operation. The United States has refused a Russian request to return him to Russia to serve out his prison term.
