From the Office of the Superintendent:
Safety Tips for
Students and Parents

Keep updated records of your children in a safe place. This includes current photographs, their height and
weight, description, dental records, passports and other essential information. Update photos and information
regularly.
Check the profile of your child’s nanny, family driver and bodyguard and all those who work in your home. You
should double check the background and bona fides of these people who work in your home. Their knowledge
of your family is extensive so make sure you have equivalent knowledge of them. You trust your children with
them, so be sure they deserve that trust!
Train your nanny and other household staff about security awareness and practices. They should learn not to
release personal information of your family members.
Establish open communication. Encourage your children to tell you or a trusted adult if anyone or anything makes
them feel scared or uncomfortable. Discuss security issues with them so they will understand the need for safety
and precautions.
Define strangers as someone children don't know very well. Teach them not to give out personal information to
strangers. This applies to the internet as well! Face Book, My Space and other social networking sites can be
dangerous places!
Make sure they know how to reach you when they feel endangered. Make them memorize (by heart) emergency
numbers and addresses particularly your cell phone number, your office number and your house number.
Have a list of family members who can be contacted in case of an emergency. Designate a family member who
would be able to fill the role of an adviser on your behalf if you are not in the country in case of an emergency.
Adopt a family code word. Choose a family code word that should be kept secret from all others. If a stranger
claims to have been sent to pick your children up, the children should ask for the code word. If your children
have doubts, they should find a nearby, trustworthy adult.
Define a “safe place” for your family. There should be a place where your children can go to when they feel
threatened or frightened: the school office; a neighbor’s home etc.
Consider varying routes. Do not take the same route on a regular basis. Be sure to have three (3) available routes
you can alternately use.
Identify security zones in your routes. Identify choke points, traffic areas, and danger zones. Be aware of potential
risks and threats along the road.
Establish “time frame” especially when the kids are on the road. Have an estimate of your kids’ traveling time per
route; know when your kids will be at any place on that route. Have someone check on their locations especially
when they are in a danger zone.
Always listen to the news. You should be aware of local issues and incidents that are happening in your locality and
know how to act.
Make your own judgments about what is safe and unsafe rather than be convinced against your better judgment
by your children. “Hanging out” at shopping malls is not necessarily “safe” behavior!

From the Modern Language Dept:

Summer Language Study / Home-stay / Travel Program to SPAIN

The ISM High School Modern Language Department is pleased to announce its Summer Language Study / Home-stay /
Travel Program to Spain from June 6th to July 4th 2009 for students aged 13 to 19 years old.
The program aims to develop students’ language proficiency and to broaden his/her cultural knowledge. This program
is being offered in cooperation with Escuela Internacional Madrid (TANDEM), a school in Madrid and San Sebastian,
Spain. Students will continue learning and, more importantly, will practice Spanish through total immersion in the
classes and during the home-stay. The school finds families for students to stay with, assists in locating appropriate
local resources for the group’s activities, plans outings, maintains a list of local medical and emergency resources, and
helps with the orientation for group leaders.

The language course proposal is to have 4 class sessions (45 minutes each) of language and culture from Monday to
Friday, from 09.30 to 13.00 each day (with a break from 11.00 to 11.30). The classes will include language and culture
subjects as well as adequate preparation for the cultural visits. Students will complete a placement test in order for
the school to form groups based on the level of Spanish.
Last year, 15 students from ISM traveled to Spain and all of them reported dramatic improvements in their acquisition
of the Spanish language as well as outstanding experiences with their home-stay families and one another during their
time in Spain.

If you are interested in receiving more information about this summer course, please contact Laurie Atilano or
Samantha Ramos in the High School Office, or email Adriana Vargas at vargasa@ismanila.org.
