Question 13.
Read the following extract from Oh! Public Performance! and answer the questions that follow. I could not remember my name, not even the first letter. Somebody giggled and I stiffened.. An impulse to write would flash through me, but my hand would refuse to move. The children began to titter and I flushed hotly. 1. Do you think what Richards classmates did was right? How would you advise them, if you were the teacher? Write two different pieces of advice that the teacher would give to the students. Use should, shouldnt, ought to etc.. 2 2. Imagine that you are Richards teacher. You are back in the staffroom. You tell one of your colleagues what has happened in the classroom. Narrate the incident in about 40 words.

Her plan was to use the salary income to purchase her ticket and study in the U.S. A colleague asked her about her future plans and the resistence she was facing from her family and friends. Construct a dialogue between Kalpana and the colleague. There should be at least five exchanges. 5. . 8. Rose Donegan and her baby brother Michael were living happily with the Carrolls, the friends of A. J. Cronin. Once he received a letter from the Carrolls in Galway. The letter gave an account of

Quite a number of men and women died as martyrs in this fight for the long-nosed one. 10. Imagine you are a TV reporter who are witnessing the violence in the city. Prepare a report for a live broadcast. Do not exceed 50 words. 5. 11. Mr. Framton Nuttel ran away from Mrs. Sappletons house and reached his sisters. Imagine you are his sister. He told you what had happened. Later you narrate the incident to the other members of the family. Write the narrative in about 50 words. You may begin like: He went to Mrs. Sappletons. There he was welcomed by a girl of fifteen 5. 12. The Poem, The Patriot-An Old Story describes the two different experiences of the patriot. At first he was welcomed as a hero. Later he was humiliated and taken to the scaffold. Do you think the poem presents a theme that has present relevance? Can you cite from the present political scenario any instance of fall in esteem as a result of difference of opinion? Prepare a review of the poem comparing the theme with the present world. Hints: experience of the patriot-hero at first-treated as a criminal later-theme and its present relevance- mood of the poem. 8. 13. (You may take hints from The Interview with Adoor Gopalakrishnan). 8. 16. A recent survey has revealed that the number of old age homes in Kerala is increasing. Aged people are neglected. Todays children live for themselves; their aged parents have become a burden to them. They disregard filial gratitude. Prepare an editorial in about 100 words for your school magazine on The Plight of the Aged in Kerala. (Take ideas from Middle Age and The Dear Departed.) 8. 17. Abel Merryweather announced his decision to marry Mrs. John Shorrocks and went out of Mrs. Slaters house. He went straight to his friend Mr. Tattersalls. But the old man was not there. Abel was disappointed as he wanted to discuss some important matters with him. He thought of writing a message to him. Prepare the message for Abel in about 50 words. 5. .
