Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Place Value Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

be able to multiply and divide a decimal by a given power of ten using the place value table. Most students should be able to multiply and divide a decimal by a given power of ten using written methods and mental recall. Some students should be able to multiply and divide a decimal by a given power of ten in index form using written methods. Key words: Place Value, Multiplication, Division, Decimal, Power of ten Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Recap prerequisite knowledge of place value by ordering decimals. Emphasise that the decimal point is fixed and when a column is blank the place value is zero. Students may use the place value mini-whiteboard to assist in organising the decimals so that a comparison of size can be made. Students present their ordered decimals on a mini-whiteboard for teacher assessments to be made and feedback given. Development Discuss the concept of multiplying a number by a power of ten. Pose the questio n How does multiplying by ten affect the position of the numbers in the columns? If the numbers move, what remains in the same place? Work through the problems with the students. Pose the question If we move the numbers left when we multiply what do you think we do when we divide? Work through a mixture of division and multiplication problems using miniwhiteboards. Students complete the two spider diagrams in their exercise books using their knowledge of place value. Assess progress of groups and individuals so that students are able to move on to the tarsia activity. Extension Use products and quotients where the power of ten is given in index form rather than as an integer. Plenary Choice of plenaries. The first consolidates the learning of the class by picking up on misconceptions that arose during the independent activities. The second involves completing mathematical sentences where students are given part of a spider diagram without the centre number or all of the operations. This is intended to extend their understanding. Assess using mini-whiteboards. Differentiation More able: Choice of plenaries where one is intended to extend the learning of the class. Use powers of ten given in index form as opposed to integers Introduce the concept of multiplying and dividing by powers of ten less than one on an individual basis. Less Able Use the place value mini-whiteboards to aid in the visualisation of moving the numbers with a fixed decimal point. Peer and teacher support through the group work with the tasia activity Address misconceptions using mini-whiteboards during the initial teaching phase. Resources: Notebook File Mini-Whiteboards, Pens and Wipers Place Value MiniWhiteboards. Tarsia activity
