San Juan Capistrano Mission Cruise
Two weeks before this cruise I
checked the 10 day forecast on
weather.com and it was all sunshine.
When I checked the forecast 1 week
later it said rain on Sunday. No other
day predicted rain but Sunday March
22. I knew it was going to rain but
hoped that I could find someplace
else to go by the time we met up to
cruise on Sunday. I looked for an
alternative cruise but everything I
found was an outside event and the
indoor events cost too much money
for admission.
Every day I would check the weather
but it predicted bad weather. Rain
60%, Winds at 23 mph for Sunday at
San Juan Capistrano. Sunday morning
came, it was cold and raining. When I
arrived at the meeting place there
were many pt cruisers there already
so I thought to myself to let the
membership decide if they want to
just cruise to the mission and then go
and have some lunch if the rain did
not stop.
The mission had a big celebration
event going on and we had been
excited about going. I asked the
membership about going and they all
said yes, “let’s go“. Maria stated that
if we were all here then it was meant
for us to go today on our cruise. With
that I said, “Let’s cruise”. We all ran
to our pt cruisers in the rain and
made sure we had a direct line with
everyone through our 2-way radio’s.
We enter the 15 south, and then the
91 west, 55 south and finally the 5
south to Ortega Highway as the rain
was pouring down cats and dogs
while driving. I was leading the
cruisers and Tommy Dorsey was
bringing up the rear. When we
changed lanes we did it with
precision movement. I would radio
Tommy to give me cover and he
would then change lanes and the pt’s
moved over in unison one by one
with me being the last one to move
into the lane.
A CRUISE IS A BRIEF PERIOD IN TIME FOR MEMORIES.
WE AT RCPTCCC WILL ALWAYS CHERISH EVERY CRUISE.
CLUB CRUISES ARE FUN & YOU MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE.
Even though it was raining hard we
had many people on the freeway
giving us the thumbs up as we
cruised at about 60-65 mph. As we
were getting closer to the mission
the rain was still coming down. We
all knew that if the sun was out we
would have a great day at the
mission because the festivities on
this day included 40 vendors, food,
music, the return of the swallows,
Italian vendors of all sorts and
much more. Recently talking with
Mike Savedra I learned that his
ancestors were buried on the
mission grounds I really wanted to
see that.

We arrived at the mission and
the rain stopped within the
hour, the clouds disappeared
and the sun came out. All you
could see was clear blue skies
and the day turned out to be
just perfect. In fact I felt
comfortable just wearing a
shirt throughout the day. We
danced, ate, explored,
shopped and enjoyed all of the
festivities that the mission had
going on.
There were so many people
who came out to celebrate it
was sometimes difficult to
walk around the mission
grounds. For lunch we walked
over about two blocks among
the beautiful landscape brick
manicured buildings to Ruby’s
restaurant and had a fantastic
luncheon. During lunch Robin
joking mentioned to the waiter
that it was Tommy’s birthday,
so after the meal about 9 girls
and 2 guys came out with a
delicious ice cream and cake
dish with a lit candle on top
and walked over to our table.
Tommy not knowing anything
about the surprise smiled as
they placed the dish on the
table and they started singing.
He joined in with the singing
not knowing whose birthday
celebration it was while
clapping in a circular motion
movement with both hands
and smiling and singing along
and probably all the while
trying to figure out whose
birthday he was singing to.
After the song everyone was
laughing and wishing him a
happy birthday. Most club
members did not know that it
really wasn’t his birthday. We
had a good laugh and a good
time and glad we made this
long trip for a great cruise to
the San Juan Capistrano
Mission. We ended the day
with the return cruise enjoying
the beautiful scenery, fresh
blue skies and joking along the
way via the 2-way radios.

Nearly 200 earthquakes stir concern.
San Bernardino County officials and scientist are
keeping a close eye on earthquake activity near the Salton
Sea, where almost 200 small aftershocks have hit the area
since Tuesday’s March 24th 4.8 magnitude temblor.
The 4:55 a.m. quake centered in an Imperial
County community called Bombay Beach shook near a
section of the San Andreas Fault that has not broken loose in
more than 300 years. It jolted areas as far away as Palm
Springs and Hemet. It’s one of the great mysteries of
Southern California seismology. Every couple of years, the
remote desert area around the Salton Sea is shaken by
swarms of small to moderate earthquakes that often last
several days.
The swarms returned this week, with the area
recording more than 200 temblors since Saturday March 21st
including several that were felt Wednesday. But this time,
scientists had sophisticated instruments in the ground to
record the activity, helping them to better understand the
swarms and how they can affect seismic risk elsewhere.
Scientists have noticed that the quakes appear to have a
pattern, moving southeast as the day’s progress. But a
bigger question remains: Can the quakes trigger larger and
potentially more destructive quakes along the San Andreas
Fault, which terminates at the shore of the Salton Sea?
A creep meter on the San Andreas Fault just north of
the Salton Sea area, operated by the University of Colorado,
found a 0.002 inch slip on the fault right after the largest
earthquake in the swarm - a magnitude 4.8 on Tuesday.
“It definitely helps to prepare yourself and your
family as much as possible,” said Megan Blaney,
spokeswomen for the county Fire Department Office of
Emergency Services.
The county received information from the
California Earthquake Prediction Evaluation Council that
there is a 1 percent to 5 percent chance of a 7.0 magnitude or
greater earthquake on the San Andreas Fault over the next
few days.
Of the dozen of aftershocks, about 10 measured at
3.0 or higher, including a 3.7 at 12:59 p.m. and a 3.6 at 12:51
a.m. on Wednesday March 25th. In 1967, a 6.2 magnitude
quake caused a 6.0 in the Imperial Valley, said Caltech
seismologist Kate Hutton.
But, she said, it’s hard to know what these smaller
earthquakes will do. “We really don’t know how to estimate
that probability,” she said. “It’s a significant chance, but
it’s not a huge chance.”
San Bernardino County of Emergency Services
officials urged residents to use the opportunity to make
preparations such as assembling emergency supplies and
formulating a family disaster plan.
“Ideally, people will have an emergency supply kit
at home, in the car and the office because no one knows
when or where the disaster is going to hit,” Blaney said.
County officials recommended keeping three days of food
and water, along with other items such as first-aid kits and
flashlights with the batteries.

One man's life is thrown into turmoil

by picking up a telephone in this
claustrophobic thriller. Stu Shepard
(Colin Farrell) is a brash, cynical, and
self-centered public relations man
who juggles a busy career with both a
wife, Kelly (Radha Mitchell), and a
mistress, Pamela (Katie Holmes). Stu
steps into a phone booth on a busy New
York street to make a call to Pamela
without Kelly being the wiser, but as
soon as Stu hangs up, the phone begins
to ring. Curious, Stu picks it up -- and a
stranger on the other end (voice of
Kiefer Sutherland) informs him that if
he hangs up the phone, he'll be shot.
The red dot of an infrared rifle scope
convinces Stu that the caller means
business, and when another man tries
to make his way into the booth, he's
shot mere inches from Stu, calling the
attention of the police. Captain Ramey
(Forest Whitaker) naturally assumes
that Stu was the killer, as Stu struggles
to find a way to convince the police of
what's happening before more lives
are lost, without leaving the booth and
putting his own life on the line.

The Story of San Juan

Capistrano's Mission Swallows
The miracle of the "Swallows" of Capistrano takes
place each year at the Mission San Juan Capistano,
on March 19th, St. Joseph's Day.
As the little birds wing their way back to the most
famous Mission in California, the village of San
Juan Capistrano takes on a fiesta air and the
visitors from all parts of the world, and all walks of
life, gather in great numbers to witness the
"miracle" of the return of the swallows.
Each year the "Scout Swallows" precede the main
flock by a few days and it seems to be their chief
duty to clear the way for the main flock to arrive
at the "Old Mission" of Capistrano.
With the arrival of early dawn on St. Joseph's Day,
the little birds begin to arrive and begin rebuilding
their mud nests, which are clinging to the ruins of
the old stone church of San Juan Capistrano. The
arches of the two story, high vaulted Chapel were
left bare and exposed, as the roof collapsed during
the earthquake of 1812.
This Chapel, said to be the largest and most ornate
in any of the missions, now has a more humble
destiny--that of housing the birds that St. Francis
loved so well.
After the summer spent within the sheltered walls
of the Old Mission in San Juan Capistrano, the
swallows take flight again, and on the Day of San
Juan, October 23, they leave after circling the
Mission bidding farewell to the "JEWEL OF ALL
MISSIONS" San Juan Capistrano, California.
