SUMMARY

CHAPTER 1

A modern Prevention policy, by confronting the reasons of
addiction confronts at the same time other social problems too,
which have to do with mental and body health. To this effect, the
Prevention Centre places its function amongst a wide social policy
which promotes health and strengthens those mechanisms that
forward self-esteem, social responsibility, volunteerism, the
development of personality and of personal abilities and, finally, the
promotion of wellbeing.
The prevention Programmes intend to generate chain, multiplicative
reactions, so as to create prevention nucleuses, volunteers’
nucleuses in the local community.
The Prevention Centre, according to what is mentioned above,
intervenes mainly with long-drawn-out, many-faceted, locally
orientated programmes in particular population-targets (parents’
training groups, educators’ groups, adolescents’ groups). For each
population-target there is particular training-sensitising framework,
considering their needs dictated by their role, their evolutionary
development period etc.
However, in life these population-targets coexist in the
community, at school, in family. This means that all interventions
about the improvement and the change of the present, non-
satisfying situation could have this direction. We need to think of the
population-targets as a complicated, particularly interesting system,
in which the way these populations relate and interact, either at
school or in family, is based on orders and directions from top
(parents, educators) to bottom (adolescents). This idea echoes
reality, which rests on control and adolescents’ discipline, and turns a
blind eye to communication. The Systemic approach about the
function of living systems does not agree with this rationale (Briggs-
Peat).
Besides, more and more researchers and scientists point out
that communication, interaction and composing approach are the
essential objects in the post-industrial period.
Thinking about all these things, we wanted to discover common
points where people sensitised by the Prevention Centre (parents,
educators and adolescent students) could coexist in mixed training
groups, in mixed groups of volunteers. For the last three years in
Syros we have tried to make out the conditions that the mixed
groups would function on, by creating a mixed theatrical group, a
mixed walking group and, finally, the four-day festival of parents’-
adolescents’-educators’ coexistence, organised in Syros for the last
three years.
Having already worked on mixed groups for four years, I feel
that they are a part of my work that offers me happiness and
satisfaction, and that makes me interested at the same time in
describing it in a scientific way, as there is not any bibliography
about it.

CHAPTER 2
Reference terms, aims and bibliographical survey
6
unselfish action that does not aim at any returns or considerations,
but without eliminating them.
Volunteerism is not a test of philanthropy, which it must not be
confused with. Contrary to charity, whose basis is social
diversification and inequality between the one who offers and the one
who receives the liberality or service, it leans on social and political
equality between the one who offers and the one who is helped, and
it must not be confused with amateurism.
Although in the past we used to refer mostly in the activity of a
minority of people with “good will”, offered by coincidence and at will,
at an unsuspected time and place, today we can talk about
volunteerism as an energetic factor of social development and
participation, as an action not only having to do with material goods-
resources or offer of voluntary work, but which can face today’s
problems and needs, such as prevention of using addictive
substances, and which can offer knowledge as well. It is clear
therefore that Volunteerism is multi-dimensional today and gives the
volunteer, through educational processes, rights and responsibilities.
Through training, the volunteers learn how to control their
motives, they discover their talents and take advantage of them, and
they place their offer among a united effort on the same direction as
the organisation they are part of.
In an organisation, voluntary work is as useful as professional
work. Professionals offer the organisation their skilled work and
constant presence. Volunteers offer renewal, imagination, dreams
and sometimes their specialised knowledge, which is over and above
their professional occupation.
Volunteerism has continuity through time; it occurs in many
civilisations, but its content varies in each period. In the
Mediterranean basin and especially in the Greek territory, the ideas
of social justice and social solidarity have stemmed from Plato’s,
Aristotle’s and the Stoics’ philosophical idealism. These ideas
influenced very profoundly the societies of that period, encouraging
their citizens to express care and sympathy for the poor and the
undeservedly suffering. It is typical that Solo’s and Pericles’s body of
laws includes measures concerning the protection of widows and
orphans, the retirement of elderly and invalid people, the
engagement of unemployed at state services for carrying out works
of public utility. We can indicatively mention Aristotle, who used to
say: “Only a life consecrated to an ideal gives human real joy” and
Pericles, who said in a speech to the Athenians of 480 B.C.: “We do
not consider that a man not interested in public matters is a peaceful
citizen, we consider that he is useless”.
After the appearance and the establishment of the Christianism
as the official religion, the resolution of social problems was
undertaken mostly by Church. This journey of volunteerism has been
continued and while being continued, at every “stop”, it developed
7
and was enriched with new elements, new prospects, new structure
and organisation. Afterwards, because of the economical recession,
the care of weak was charged of necessity to one’s own initiative or
to the very few mechanisms that developed by or next to Church
(Red Cross, Christian unions).
Nevertheless, the long journey of organised volunteerism has
not stopped yet. In the 20th century it took a more complicated
ideological course, so as to finally get to the form of today’s
voluntary organisations. Now the participation in voluntary vehicles,
citizens’ groups-initiatives and self-aid groups has become a political
action.
The conclusions made through the prevention volunteers’
training and action during all this period of time show the importance
of the volunteers’ role. However, the executives of the local
government need to understand the volunteers’ role and to
undertake to mark their role out in the local society, as well as to be
open to the volunteers’ messages and needs.
The support and the financing of organised structures, of
societies, for the local community’s good, at the existing juncture
concerning their exploitation by the local government, is feasible on
some conditions.
The volunteers can spread the message in the homes of Syros,
for example about the important role of the family concerning the
prevention of every single addiction, education and promotion of
health, as well as the need for parents training in Syros with the
experiencing method, so that everybody become conscious and
active.
The prevention of addictions depends, apart from volunteers
and parents, on educators, as well as on the State and Church.
Volunteers can promote the creative occupation of young people with
activities, giving an impulse to life values and a cosy, humane
climate, exuded by creative meetings, which work encouragingly and
give a lot of things to the ones who need prevention.
Prevention volunteers are people who fight against today’s
non-stop consuming way of life -or who want to believe so, and time
is an incorruptible judge of their intentions-, people using this way to
show their presence and their participation in this world. They are
people who have a little free-time and want to use it in something
they consider positive. People who place in their priorities list the
selective involvement in the matters of public interest during their
very little free-time. People who have settled on the importance of
personal participation for changing established social situations. They
are people who resist the grim alienation, which in west societies has
been upgraded by consumerism on a model of life.
Information by itself does not change behaviours. Every
change of behaviour presupposes voluntary participation of trainees
and trainers. Nobody change and nobody can make someone else
8
change, unless it is one’s own wish. And those who want to help at
the addictions prevention have to participate at free will, because
only in this case it is possible to alter in a positive way negative
attitudes and behaviours. Substantial prevention is attained through
proper education of the individuals, by the development of a mature,
balanced and self-reliant personality, so as to face everyday
problems relying on one’s self instead of the fake crutches of
substances.
The prevention of addictions is a volunteers’ yearning, a
dream, a faith. State-run vehicles have to encourage, to support and
to respect the voluntary citizens’ contribution to the effort to
sensitise people about the big problem of addictive substances and
addictions in general, for a higher quality of mental and body health.
In the days of the decreasing expenses for social liberalities, while
people’s needs are increasing, voluntary offer needs to be
encouraged. Educators-volunteers are needed, so as to develop the
self-esteem and the self-confidence of sensitive social groups, of
addicted people, of children, and to support and improve
communication. School needs to “open up” towards a wider part of
the community and, especially, towards volunteers, because
volunteerism forms a condition for success at prevention. These
changes result from an individual’s inner processes, which depend on
one’s acceptance and maturity.
Now I would like to mention, as an example of the major value
of volunteerism, a very sensitive sector, such as the sector of mental
health, where volunteers are valuable for its promotion, as well as for
the reform of the services system and the development of the model
of mental health in the community. Their action makes possible the
spreading of positive attitudes and views about problems concerning
mental health in a wider part of the population, the connection of
services with community life and their function as a not formal web
supporting the efforts to psychosomatic restoration and incorporation
in the society.
Volunteerism is a polymorphous and energetic system, in which
personal completion meets collective affluence. The forms that the
voluntary offer can take every time constantly widen and deepen in
the whole spectre of social life, from the rendering of care services to
organised activities about the protection of the environment, and
from the activation of groups of citizens about the prevention or
confrontation of natural disasters to education rendering to socially
excluded people or groups of people. Voluntary action on the other
hand forms a training experience by itself, developing a volunteer’s
social, communicational and professional dexterities. The volunteer is
not only a transmitter, but also a receiver of the benefits that derive
from voluntary action.
Through people’s training in groups on dexterities concerning better
communication, by exchanging thoughts and feelings, by adopting a
9
system of values, we are led to more functional ways of
communication in family and at school. However, this remains
deficient, if not completed with the shared experience that results
from application and practice, that is to say the transition from
theory to action. The aims of a prevention centre do not confine to
the realisation of educational seminars for population-targets, but
have also to do with the connection with anotropic processes in the
community, so that autonomous seats of connection and
interdependence between people who accept common values and
aims are created.
The participation of Thiseas’s scientific group in the supervision of the
Athenian Centre of Human Studies (A.K.M.A.), an area of my training
on family therapy and systemic thinking, helped so that this
particular programme became a space of interaction and sharing
among all the executives of the centre and not only them, since
through collective supervision together with other centres in
A.K.M.A., this happened with executives of other prevention centres
all over Greece too.

CHAPTER 3
Methodology
11
common to the qualitative research paradigm, include: keeping a
research journal, document collection and analysis, participant
observation recordings, questionnaire surveys, structured and
unstructured interviews, and case studies.
Kurt Lewin is generally considered the “father” of action
research. A German social and experimental psychologist and one of
the founders of the Gestalt school, he was concerned with social
problems and focused on participative group processes for
addressing conflict, crises and change, generally within organisations.
Initially, he was associated with the Center for Group Dynamics at
MIT in Boston, but soon went on to establish his own National
Training Laboratories.
Lewin first coined the term “action research” in his 1946 paper
“Action Research and Minority Problems”, characterising Action
Research as “a comparative research on the conditions and effects of
various forms of social action and research leading to social action”,
using a process of “a spiral of steps, each of which is composed of a
circle of planning action, and fact-finding about the result of the
action”.
Eric Trist, another major contributor to the field from that
immediate post-war era, was a social psychiatrist whose group at the
Travistock Institute of Human Relations in London engaged in applied
social research, initially for the civil repatriation of German prisoners
of war. He and his colleagues tended to focus more on large-scale,
multi-organisational problems.
Both Lewin and Trist applied their research to systemic change
in and between organizations. They emphasized direct professional-
client collaboration and affirmed the role of group relations as basis
for problem-solving. Both were avid proponents of the principle that
decisions are best implemented by those who help make them.
Especially, the Educational Action Research stream has its
foundations in the writings of John Dewey, the great American
educational philosopher of the 1920s and ‘30s, who believed that
professional educators should become involved in community
problem-solving. Its practitioners, not surprisingly, operate mainly
out of educational institutions, and focus on development of
curriculum, professional development and applying learning in a
social context. It is often the case that university-based action
researchers work with primary and secondary school teachers and
students on community projects.
Action Research is used in real situations, rather than in
contrived, experimental studies, since its primary focus is on solving
real problems. It can, however, be used by social scientists for
preliminary or pilot research, especially when the situation is too
ambiguous to frame a precise research question. Mostly, though, in
accordance with its principles, it is chosen when circumstances
require flexibility, the involvement of the people in the research, or
12
change must take place quickly or holistically. It is often the case
that those who apply this approach are practitioners who wish to
improve understanding of their practice, social change activists trying
to mount an action campaign, or, more likely, academics who have
been invited into an organisation (or other domain) by decision-
makers aware of a problem requiring action research, but lucking the
requisite methodological knowledge to deal with it.
As action research is carried out in real-world circumstances, and
involves close and open communication among the people involved,
the researchers must pay close attention to ethical considerations in
the conduct of their work.
Richard Winter (1996) lists a number of principles:
• “Make sure that the relevant persons, committees and
authorities have been consulted, and that the principles guiding
the work are accepted in advance by all.
• All participants must be allowed to influence the work, and the
wishes of those who do not wish to participate must be
respected.
• The development of the work must remain visible and open to
suggestions from others.
• Permission must be obtained before making observations or
examining documents produced for other purposes.
• Descriptions of others’ work and points of view must be
negotiated with those concerned before being published.
• The researcher must accept responsibility for maintaining
confidentiality.
• Decisions made about the direction of the research and the
probable outcomes are collective.
• Researchers are explicit about the nature of the research
process from the beginning, including all personal biases and
interests.
• There is equal access to information generated by the process
for all participants”.

Activity of the project-Results
For the last four years in Syros we have been trying to form
the conditions that mixed groups would be able to function on, by
creating a mixed theatrical group, a mixed walking group and, finally,
the four-day festival of parents’-adolescents’-educators’ coexistence,
organised in Syros the last three years.

A. ADOLESCENTS
17
This cooperation led to the creation of a space of interaction and
discussion, not only for these adolescents, but also for all the pupils
of the Cyclades, since, financed by Thiseas, the magazine was
printed and delivered at the secondary schools and the high schools
of the prefecture (access to the magazine “Complete Ignorance”:
www.thiseaskyklades.gr, periodically).
Maybe the words of a trained educator in the introduction of the
magazine can stamp in the best way the results of this cooperation:
“The “soul adventure”, as I call it, began for me three years ago,
when I came in Syros for the first time and I firstly participated in
some experience seminars about the prevention of addictions in
addictive substances and then in an educators’ training seminar
organised by Thiseas Kykladon, whose subject was “School and
Family”. When I felt that I had found my feet (to borrow the title of
the educational material) I decided to organise at the 2nd Secondary
School of Syros a group of young pupils, who behaved though with
maturity and responsibility rarely met even among adults, a reason
for which I thank them publicly even two years later.
The good progress of that attempt led me to undertake an even more
daring one this year, a group of pupils at the 1st High School of
Syros, and experience with them the substance of pedagogical work
over and above school books and exams.
What is it? I don’t know, but holding my pupils’ heart-hands we
searched together for the real path of life and I encouraged them to
cross it armed with humane ideals, values and dreams that dismissed
all the fears and shut the mouth of every “Siren”. The kids who
cooperated put their heart and soul into the programme and their
attitude helped its realisation despite their extremely little free-time
because of school obligations. Their attitude also helped to impart a
part of their emotion to others too, through the magazine you’re
holding right now. I never stop learning by “my children”, either in or
out of the classroom.
I thank the Health Education Office of the Secondary Education
Headquarters of the Cyclades for the approbation and the support of
the programme, I thank from the bottom of my heart Thiseas
Kykladon for their guidance and the realisation of the magazine and
above all I thank my pupils, because without them we wouldn’t have
made this wonderful “trip” with this wonderful end, which is at the
same time a new beginning”.

animals’ watering, or to beautiful, secluded beaches. These paths
were walked from time to time by small adults’ groups with the
purpose of being in touch with the nature. At those meetings though
there were rarely youths under twenty years old. However, during
conversations made afterwards, especially with pupils, a lot of them
seemed to be interested in discovering their native land. There was
therefore a nucleus of youths that wished to participate in such
activities. But this did not seem complete. If we had made do with
simple walks, we would have been one more excursion society and
nothing more. Consequently, the idea of discussing came up. Thiseas
Kykladon undertook and suggested to trained educators the planning
of an adolescents’ programme, so that they would be able to walk
and discover the paths of Syros.
The realisation of the programme offers the pupils who participate
the capability to:
• Take advantage of their free-time in a pleasant and creative
way, chosen by themselves
• Discover the place where they live, its beauties and its
problems, its flora and its fauna
• Contribute actively to the protection of the environment
• Know their classmates better and discuss with them about
matters they are preoccupied with
• Discover the history and the culture of their native land, be
helped concerning their relationships with the others and
with themselves, have beautiful moments, experiences, and
knowledge to remember, and, finally, encourage others too
to undertake such activities.

grown traditional products, history and utility of the path). For
example the pupils:
• Search for and collect information about the path they
are going to walk on
• Search for people among their relatives and their wide
social environment that used to walk on the same path
• Draw up questionnaires, make interviews, write down
those people’s experience and transfer it into the group.
They even invite them –whether possible- to walk
together with the group and to talk on the spot about a
past period
• Finally decide on the way of recording the information
(photographs, video-recording, tape-recording).

B. PARENTS
21
children have participated in adolescents’ groups with three circles of
education (ten two-hour sessions in each circle) about the subjects:
communication within family, limits, stages of the family and social
changes, personal differentiation and change, wellbeing-relating.
C. EDUCATORS
Aims:
• Precise, correct and documented information
• Facing of pupils that belong to groups of high danger
• Propulsion of functional communication and handling of the
problems presented in the school community
• Introduction of the “active listening” as a basic pedagogical
way and means for the communication of a teacher with
his/her pupils
• Consciousness of the basic pedagogical rule, according to which
the degree of the teacher’s enthusiasm and morals -or the lack
of these- in class influences accordingly the pupils’ progress
and attitude
• The respect they pay to humane values is the best thing so
that the pupils’ respective respect is developed
• They accept the principle of “the pupil’s all-out development”
• They learn to recognise and to accept the pupil’s individuality
• Educators realise the critical point: that they form strong
behaviour models for their pupils
• They realise that smoking and alcohol at school are very
serious matters.
22
• School as a vehicle for preventing the use of addictive
substances
• The class as a group-working with a group
• Dexterities of improving communication in the class
• Resolution of conflicts
• Planning and realisation of prevention programmes for
adolescents-pupils, taking advantage of the material
“Finding my feet” and “Adolescents’ discussions”
• Stages of the family and social changes
• Triangles within family
• Personal differentiation and change.

school. The crisis in Peter’s motivates the parents’ couple to redefine
their relationship and, of course, the relationship with their son. The
system-school is finally led to changes, according to which pupils,
educators and parents search for new ways of communication and
coexistence. The performance finishes with the presentation of an
eight-minute video, where this change appears through real activities
realised at schools of Syros in cooperation with Thiseas Kykladon
Prevention Centre, introducing a new, experiencing way of teaching,
with the stimulus of the island paths, which pupils, parents and
educators walk on and discover, while being sensitised on
environment and ecology matters.
This cooperation between children whose ages begin from
fourteen years old and parents and educators older even forty years
has been something that made us all full of emotion and joy.

discussions. A common feeling of solidarity and understanding has
arose from all this. We have made conclusions about both the
parents’ and the children’s behaviour. In the end, leaving this
coexistence, we took in our luggage our self-knowledge through self-
criticism, and the belief that this common route, which has had so
many positive results, can be continued in life”.
“Walking for the first time in the room where the sessions took
place, we felt curiosity and anxiety about what was about to happen.
Among acquaintances and unacquainted, the fact of a restrained
attitude being an obstacle to our first touch was normal. Little by
little and without us understanding, the time and the atmosphere
changed “I” to “We” in a sweet and soft way. Constant effort and
discussion helped us unite our dreams and our sensibilities for a
better world. We have been enriched with ideas, we have exchanged
experiences, we have become full of spite, we have achieved better
understanding and we have seen the world in a new way. We want
voluntary work and participation in programmes that will show off
and preserve our cultural heritage and tradition (paths, cobbled
roads, bridges)”.
Given the strong interest by all the sides and especially the
enthusiasm of the youths who participated in the festival in 2005, we
then prepared the Chroussa Festival 2006, which was an even more
enriched experience. In 2006 the mixed theatrical group of Thiseas
began to write a new theatrical play and the paths programme
continued, with adolescents, parents and teachers of Syros
participating.

donations and, above all, voluntary support by parents and educators
who participated in other stages of the programme. We gathered
therefore, 25 persons, adults and kids, and we went to France in July
2006 for twelve creative days. This coexistence, as it had already had
a three-year course, was an important lesson for a life for all of us,
adults and children. We certified in the best way that the
communication and the conciliation of different generations is
possible and feasible.

FOUNDATION OF “FEREKYDIS FROM SYROS”, A CENTRE OF
CULTURE, COMMUNICATION AND EVERLASTING DEVELOPMENT OF
THE CYCLADES
31
c) Taking advantage of the material collected, for scientific
research, publications and creation of audiovisual material,
promoting history, culture, environment, social policy and
everlasting development.
d) Collaboration with local government organisations, universities,
educational and cultural centres, for the organisation of
manifestations, research publications, seminars, foundation of
branches of theirs, and other activities serving the company’s
aims.
e) Foundation of a Theatrical Workshop, so that people who love
and who are related with theatre, youths, students, children
from Syros and from the Cyclades in general, can be
ceaselessly trained. According to the workshop’s aims, they
can be initiated into some sides of theatre, such as acting,
direction, stage-designing, choreography, script writing
through a group’s formation and function techniques, drama
games, improvisation etc. The theatrical workshop works
annually, with certain points taught by professional hearteners
and artists who offer their services voluntarily.
f) Scientific contribution to the elaboration, application and
appreciation of programmes and measures concerning the
environment and the viable development in the Cyclades.
Technical and scientific support of national, communal and
international programmes and activities concerning the
environment and the viable development. Collection,
classification and elaboration of facts and data about the
environment, and allowance of objective, reliable and
comparable information to public and private users. Spread of
the information that concerns the environment, familiarisation
and sensitisation on environment and viable development
points. Grounding, further training and sensitisation of youths
and citizens on the same matters. Conventions, meetings,
training seminars and other informative manifestations.
g) Function of new, innovative forms of action about the nature of
Syros and of the Cyclades in general. Syros, like all the islands
of the Aegean Sea, is dotted with paths that in the old days
would connect settlements with each other or would lead to
places with water, which were appropriate for being cultivated
or for animals’ watering, or to beautiful, secluded beaches. The
realisation of the programme offers the pupils who participate
the capability to:
• Take advantage of their free-time in a pleasant and creative
way, chosen by themselves
• Discover the place where they live, its beauties and its
problems, its flora and its fauna
• Contribute actively to the protection of the environment
32
• Know their classmates better and discuss with them about
matters they are preoccupied with
• Discover the history and the culture of their native land, be
helped concerning their relationships with the others and
with themselves, have beautiful moments, experiences, and
knowledge to remember, and, finally, encourage others to
undertake such activities too.
33
PATHS OF SYROS
34
The basic objects of the theatrical Workshop that works within
the bounds of “Ferekydis from Syros” are:
• The ceaseless training of educators, people who love and
relate to theatre, students, children on representative
arts, as we believe that this helps the development of
arts as well as educational tools in or out of the school
• The pilot application of new ideas in representative arts
at school and in the community of Syros
According to these aims, its members can:
• Learn aspects of theatre, such as acting, direction, stage-
designing, choreography, drama elaboration, as well as
techniques of a group’s formation and function, drama games,
improvisation etc.
• Explore the abilities of theatre and educational drama, either in
teaching subjects of the curriculum (through role playing,
dramatisation exercises, forum theatre techniques etc.) or as a
tool of facing interdisciplinary, intercultural and social matters.
• Exchange experiences, learn about theatre and educational
systems of other countries, and get in touch with scientific
research and action as they internationally develop in matters
of theatre and drama training.
35
communication has unwritten codes that touch the boundaries of
law-breaking. The overturning of Anthi’s life happens when a teacher
of hers at school suggests creating something that the adolescents
will feel really close to and will want to share with adults: an e-
newspaper, www.ithakes.gr. New ideas, creativity, expression,
coexistence, two different worlds getting closer…
Training on theatrical creation is an investment for the
participators and for the community, since Syros is a place with a
long and bright theatre tradition, having the first theatre in modern
Greece. The touch with other groups of theatre in Europe climax,
gives an impetus and a step forward that will certainly influence all
the participators positively and will bring new ideas, reticulation and
encouragement for new objects.
In addition, the promotion of ancient greek drama in Europe is
also an important part of this programme and it is a great pleasure
for us to be the one’s who represent Greece and greek culture.
Greece is going to be the country-guest of honour in the centre of
Europe for ten days.
The constitution of the European Juvenile Theatre in 2004 in
Grenoble, France talks about the common values of isonomy,
democracy, respect of human rights in a multicultural Europe, for a
Europe that dreams of and creates with the youths’ eyes a better
world.
Our participation in the festival gives us the ability to realise
cultural exchanges with the other countries that participate.
Apart from the Festival in France, some other festivals have
started taking place in other European countries too, such as Italy,
Germany etc. The realisation of a respective festival in Syros could
be a prospect. It is a feasible aim, as Syros has one of the best
theatres in Greece, the Apollon Theatre, as well as residents who
love theatre and actively take part in various cultural activities.

2006 by presenting the play “The Slap” and this year’s
invitation for July 2007 is the reward and at the same time the
challenge for new objects, serving even more this approach
among parents, adolescents and educators.
• This participation was also the challenge and the spark for the
creation of “Ferekydis”, so that it could develop even more art
expression and its members’ training.
• The creation of “Ferekydis from Syros” Centre of Culture,
Communication and Everlasting Development of the Cyclades is
a turning-point to the creative effort.
• “Ferekydis” places human in the centre. It considers that
culture and communication help a human to develop and to
evolve so as to become HUMAN. Searching for wellbeing is part
of this process. It also considers that theatre and culture are
society’s meeting points and spaces where people can express
and discuss their experiences and dreams about human and
society, environment and everlasting development through a
holistic approach.
39
boundaries of law-breaking. The overturning of Anthi’s life happens
when a teacher of hers at school suggests creating something that
the adolescents will feel really close to and will want to share with
adults: an e-newspaper, www.ithakes.gr. New ideas, creativity,
expression, coexistence, two different worlds getting closer…
At this point I could say a few words about our way in theatre.
Basing on the social theatre approach, we try to receive messages
from the society, which –through group processes- finally compose a
play-suggestion presented to the society again. We could say that
social theatre could be defined as a social action, as an expression
and education function, which –using the theatrical action as a tool
and the collective living of facts as a pedagogical mechanism- aims at
spherical mental, sentimental and body cultivation, development,
maturity of the group’s members and through their interaction at
human communication. The presentation of this work to the
community acts like a catalyst for the audience, who may recognise
their own experiences, leading them to an inner discussion, because
of identification with the situations presented or differentiation and
change of certain attitudes. In this way, theatre helps humans to
develop and evolve, so as to be HUMANS. Searching for the beautiful
is part of the process. As a result theatre makes its mark as a space
where the community gathers, where citizens express their
40
experience and discuss about their dreams concerning human and
society, finding again the roots that connect it with ancient drama
and its function in the ancient city.
Thus it is such a joy that we are going to participate in the 19th
European Juvenile Theatre Festival, whose subject is Sophocles’s
Antigone. This meeting has to do with the role of theatre in the
community of Grenoble and, as so many theatrical groups
participate, the role of theatre in the community in general,
approaching diachronic existential and social questions.

έχεις πάνω σου. Τρεις µέρες αποβολή έφαγες και δε νοιώθεις τίποτα;
τα πούµε µε ηρεµία, να σε κεράσω κι ένα τσιγαράκι…ε µανούλα;
που του πέταξα το βιβλίο;
Πέτρος : Τι είναι αυτά που λες τώρα ρε µάνα;

Φώτης: (Συνωµοτικά) Ρε συ που είναι η Ανθή;
Ανδρέας: Να εκεί είναι, χορεύει µε τον πρώην της Στέλλας;
Φώτης: ∆ες πως κοιτιούνται; Λες να παίζει κάτι;

Σύµβουλος: Πιστεύεις ότι µετά θα βρεις εύκολα δουλειά ;

Σύµβουλος : Γιώργο , εσύ θέλεις να κάνεις κάτι τέτοιο ;

Σύµβουλος : Μόνο η κατάληψη ήταν η προϋπήρχε κάτι άλλο ;
Σύµβουλος: Τι σκέφτεσαι να κάνεις τώρα ;
αυτό που θέλετε και αυτά που δεν σας αφήνουν ;
Σύµβουλος : Τι να κάνετε άλλο ;

σκουλαρίκια , µόνο αυτά είναι προβλήµατα ;

εφηβεία της; Οι γονείς της;
Πώς θα το κατάφερνε όµως; Με ποιο τρόπο;
Τι έγινε µετά από όλα αυτά;

κάνεις παρέα µ' αυτόν, ούτε µε τον άλλον, µην έχεις αγόρι... Αγόρι;
έζησε ποτέ ελεύθερος πρέπει να κάνει και σ' εµένα το ίδιο;
151

5th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ABOUT THEATRE/DRAMA
AND REPRESENTATIVE ARTS IN EDUCATION
&
REGIONAL CONVENTION OF INTERNATIONAL
DRAMA/THEATRE &EDUCATION ASSOCIATION-IDEA
154
SPEECH
Introduction
155
The prevention Programmes intend to generate chain, multiplicative
reactions, so as to create prevention nucleuses, volunteers’
nucleuses in the local community.
The Prevention Centre, according to what is mentioned above,
intervenes mainly with long-drawn-out, many-faceted, locally
orientated programmes in particular population-targets (parents’
training groups, educators’ groups, adolescents’ groups). For each
population-target there is particular training-sensitising framework,
considering their needs dictated by their role, their evolutionary
development period etc.
However, in life these population-targets coexist in the
community, at school, in family. This means that all interventions
about the improvement and the change of the present, non-
satisfying situation could have this direction. We need to think of
the population-targets as a complicated, particularly interesting
system, in which the way these populations relate and interact,
either at school or in family, is based on orders and directions from
top (parents, educators) to bottom (adolescents). This idea echoes
reality, which rests on control and adolescents’ discipline, and turns
a blind eye to communication. The Systemic approach about the
function of living systems does not agree with this rationale (Briggs-
Peat). Besides, more and more researchers and scientists point out
that communication, interaction and composing approach are the
essential objects in the post-industrial period.
Thinking about all these things, we wanted to discover
common points where people sensitised by the Prevention Centre
(parents, educators and adolescent students) could coexist in mixed
training groups, in mixed groups of volunteers. For the last three
years in Syros we have tried to make out the conditions that the
mixed groups would function on, by creating a mixed theatrical
group, a mixed walking group and, finally, the four-day festival of
parents’-adolescents’-educators’ coexistence, organised in Syros for
the last three years.

APPRECIATION
A. ADOLESCENTS
Totally eleven groups of pupils from Syros and Tinos, from 2003
to 2005, realised Health Education Programmes with the
educational material “Finding my feet” and “Adolescents’
discussions” of the Scientific University Institute of Mental Health.
They also realised some innovative activities (the pupils’ magazine
“Complete Ignorance”, summer groups, walking groups).
157
In 2003-2004 two adolescents’ groups, from the 1st High School
of Syros and from the High School of Tinos, finishing the
programme sessions, decided to cooperate and through common
sessions in both islands they stamped the processes of their groups
by publishing the school magazine “Complete Ignorance”.
In addition, in 2004-2005 worked five walking groups of
adolescents, of educators-co-ordinators trained by the Prevention
Centre, and parents. Seventy-five pupils from the 1st and the 3rd
Secondary Schools of Syros and from the High School Of Tinos
joined the programme. During the programme “Walking on my
island’s paths-Discovering myself”, the adolescents were given the
chance, through team work and while walking on the paths of their
island, to discover themselves, to get trained on self-development
dexterities and to relate with their teachers and their parents in a
new way. The special thing about the sessions was that they were
adapted to outdoor conditions, taking advantage of the nature’s
stimuluses. The parents have been the backers of the programme.
The two summer adolescents’ groups (2003 and 2004 in
Syros) were trained with a programme called “Travelling in the
Aegean Sea and in life”, adapted on the summer island
environment. During sessions of ten weeks, they worked on sailing
and sea-travelling dexterities, as well as on dexterities useful for
“life-travelling”. As it was planned from the beginning and
everybody had agreed, the one group realised a trip by small boat
and camped on an isolated beach of Syros for two days. During
these two days, the youths were given the chance to apply their
sailing knowledge on practice on one hand, and to participate in
self-preservation activities and in an appreciation of the whole effort
on the other hand.
B. PARENTS
There have been six parents’ groups in Syros, from the Parents’
Associations of the secondary schools of Syros. Those parents’
children have participated in adolescents’ groups with three circles
of education (ten two-hour sessions in each circle) about the
subjects: communication within family, limits, stages of the family
and social changes, personal differentiation and change, wellbeing-
relating.
C. EDUCATORS
158
Four groups of educators functioned in total, from the secondary
and the high schools of Syros, with three training circles (eight two-
hour sessions in each circle), whose subjects were: communication
at school, school and family, mental and sentimental health at
school.
159
charge to the teacher who used force. The catharsis comes through
the teacher’s factual apology in front of Peter, which brings peace at
school. The crisis in Peter’s motivates the parents’ couple to
redefine their relationship and, of course, the relationship with their
son. The system-school is finally led to changes, according to which
pupils, educators and parents search for new ways of
communication and coexistence. The performance finishes with the
presentation of an eight-minute video, where this change appears
through real activities realised at schools of Syros in cooperation
with Thiseas Kykladon Prevention Centre, introducing a new,
experiencing way of teaching, with the stimulus of the island paths,
which pupils, parents and educators walk on and discover, while
being sensitised on environment and ecology matters.
This cooperation between children whose ages begin from fourteen
years old and parents and educators older even forty years has
been something that made us all full of emotion and joy.

APPRECIATION

leaving this coexistence, we took in our luggage our self-knowledge
through self-criticism, and the belief that this common route, which
has had so many positive results, can be continued in life”.
“Walking for the first time in the room where the sessions
took place, we felt curiosity and anxiety about what was about to
happen. Among acquaintances and unacquainted, the fact of a
restrained attitude being an obstacle to our first touch was normal.
Little by little and without us understanding, the time and the
atmosphere changed “I” to “We” in a sweet and soft way. Constant
effort and discussion helped us unite our dreams and our
sensibilities for a better world. We have been enriched with ideas,
we have exchanged experiences, we have become full of spite, we
have achieved better understanding and we have seen the world in
a new way. We want voluntary work and participation in
programmes that will show off and preserve our cultural heritage
and tradition (paths, cobbled roads, bridges)”.
Given the strong interest by all the sides and especially the
enthusiasm of the youths who participated in the festival in 2005,
we then prepared the Chroussa Festival 2006, which was an even
more enriched experience. In 2006 the mixed theatrical group of
Thiseas began to write a new theatrical play and the paths
programme continued, with adolescents, parents and teachers of
Syros participating.
