Step 1: Start the day with clear, consistent, procedural steps and immediate task.
o Students briefly present an experience they had with biology. A verbal explanation, a paragraph to turn in and a drawing/picture of the experience. o Take attendance during this time. Do not start with attendance. o Establish a quiet learning environment from the start of class.

Step 2: Have a clear and visible space important papers, boards, desks, etc.

Step 3: Plan to keep students engaged the entire lesson.

o Place for students to place belongings. o All frequently used bulletin boards, screens, demonstration areas, and displays are easy to see and read from everywhere in the room. o Display classroom expectations board or poster. o Arrange teacher desk close to the students to monitor student engagement. Proximity matters! o Handout, homework, and classwork pickup station. o Have a thorough understanding of the materials present in the room.

o Do not waste time. o Stay close to the students at all times to monitor progress toward learning objectives and engagement. o Be explicit with and establish transitions between concepts and be explicit when moving onto a different, but related topic. o Overplan the lesson. Keep daily, unit, and semester goals in mind and monitor student progress toward those goals throughout the lesson.

Step 4: Maintain an inviting, welcoming, and positive presence.
o Greet students at the door every morning. o Say their name, smile, ask them to prepare their materials, and read the board for further instructions. o Speak in short, comprehensible sentences. Steer away from long speeches. o Encourage and praise positive student behavior. o Engage students with an invitation to learn and join the class on the journey. o Never underestimate the power of a positive attitude.

Step 5: Establish clear classroom expectations and enforce them with consistency and justice.
o Display a board or poster of your expectations of students in a visible space. o Keep a student record book and record attendance, behavior, and other observations. Make it efficient! o Develop clear discipline plan for students to grow accustomed. Develop routines early in the school year and stick to them! o Display rules and consequences board for students to see. o Collaborate with other teachers to maintain consistent management plan throughout the school. This simplifies student lives so they may focus on studying.

Step 6: End the day with structured clean-up time in which students have specific duties.
o Sweep floors, erase boards, close computer screens, arrange books, and organize binders. o Praise students for impressive work and focus. o Preview the next lesson, organize their binder with them, or remind them to write down the homework into their planner. o Always display board of what to do when you are done with your work. o Ask for any clarifying questions throughout the lesson. o Say: There is nothing better than knowing you did a good job.
