Active and Passive Transport Play Reflection Questions

Act 1 1. Why are the phospholipids always moving around each other? - The phospholipids are always moving around each other because they are fluid. 2. Why do the water molecules always move to the side that had the fewest water molecules? - Water molecules always move to the side that has the fewest water molecules because they use diffusion and move to levels of lower concentration. The molecules are not attracted to each other which makes them go to the side with less molecules, moving with its concentration gradient. 3. What is it called when water molecules diffuse through a selectively permeable membrane? -This is called osmosis when this happens. 4. Why could water and carbon dioxide molecules get through the lipid bilayer, but glucose could`nt? -The water and carbon dioxide molecules could get through the lipid bilayer because they are so small and the glucose molecules could not because it was too big. Act 2 1. Can a glucose molecule get through the calcium ion channel? Why or why not? - No, glucose molecules cannot get through a calcium ion channel because only calcium ions can get through the calcium ion channel. 2. Did calcium generally move with its concentration gradient or against it? - The calcium generally moved with its concentration gradient. Act 3 1. Which way did the glucose carrier protein transport the glucose molecules? With or against their concentration gradient? - The glucose carrier protein transported the glucose molecules inside of the cell. They went against the concentration gradient. 2. Why could only glucose molecules get through the channel? -Only glucose could pass through it because it was a glucose channel meaning that only glucose can go through it. 3. What was necessary for the glucose carrier protein to be able to transport the glucose across the membrane? - ATP (energy) was needed for the glucose carrier protein to transport glucose across the membrane.

Act 4 1. Which act(s) of our play would fall under the title passive transport? Why? Give evidence from this activity to explain your answer. - Acts one and two because no energy was needed in these acts. To be classified as passive transport, no energy is used. Since no energy was used, then they would fall under the title passive transport. For an example, for the calcium ion channel, ATP was not needed to transport the ions.

2. What are the scientific names of the different kinds of passive transport demonstrated? - The scientific names of the different kinds of passive transport being demonstrated are osmosis, diffusion, and facilitated diffusion. 3. Which act(s) of our play would fall under the title active transport? Why? Give evidence from this activity to explain your answer. -Acts three and four would fall under the title active transport because ATP was apart of these acts which means that energy was used. To be an active transport, energy needs to be used so therefore these acts are active transport. For an example, the glucose carrier protein was apart of acts three and four. This used ATP to transport the glucose molecules so therefore it would be active transport.
