INFORMATIVE TEXT http://www.yosciweb.eu/en/component/content/article/40-best-practices-andrecommendations/57-informative-text.html The text on science websites should be informative without being too difficult to read or boring.

Style of writing should be somewhat entertaining and clearly to the point. Images should be used to dress up the text. Also, it should be age appropriate. It is recommended that the style of writing is kept at least somewhat entertaining and that images are used to dress up the text. Websites should communicate clearly and to the point. Spelling and grammar should be correct. All text, images, tables and figures should have headings or captions that can be read independently of the information provided in the text so that users can quickly determine the content without reading the whole text. Organization of the text should be clear on all pages not just the front-page. Clear organization can include easily readable chunks of text with appropriate space between paragraphs and perhaps images in between them. First impressions matter and with the ubiquity of search engines, the front page is not necessarily the first page users see. Articles on science websites can include a number of words that the reader is not familiar with. Having links inside or next to these words leading to explanations of terms can be very helpful. It should however be noted that too many links in the body of the text can be counterproductive as young people might find it hard to work out what the site itself actually says.

EXPRESSIVE TEXT http://darlamack.blogs.com/darlamack/ March 26, 2005 How Young is Too Young for a Cell Phone? I've been noticing recently that the mobile market has been taking steps in targeting youths. Sanrio of course has its Hello Kitty phone (Nokia 6010 GSM) targeted for girls of all ages (including myself). Mattel now has the Barbie "My Scene" phone (Nokia 3587i CDMA) customized with My Schene wallpapers and ringtones. And now the Firefly, which seems to target even younger people then the Barbie and Hello Kitty phones. Made specifically for "tween". *Lol, what the hell is a tween? I don't remember being a tween. Is that somewhere between toddler and pre-teen? What I'm really trying to get at is... is it all really necessary? With the way schools are nowadays, do we really need to disrupt their young lives by just giving them a reason to get into trouble, or worse get hurt? I remember in 11th grade when this girl wanted to jack me up for my sheepskin jacket (yes and for those wondering it was pink!!) I've been out of school for a while, but I see that times have not changed. Kids are getting into fights just to protect their possessions. I wonder if the Manufacturers are taking that into consideration while trying to make the mighty dollar. I'm not one to bark or bite at the big dawgs, but being a parent I honestly don't see the logic behind it. And will the parents really assume responsibility? I can see it now... a phone call places by an angry parent whose child has just ran up the family plan bill to $1000. Last words of the conversation... well you should have made cell phones for such young people!!! Of course that just pushes the blame on the provider, but I can see it happening. There are adults out there that can't even maintain their phone bill. It may be a skyrocketing concept and do well... but as far as I'm concerned my kids will not use cell phones until they can afford to have them. Note: I had to post that image of my youngest son with my Nokia 7210. Lol I felt it went accordingly to my topic!! * Lol stands for Laugh out loud Internet slang.

LEGAL TEXT http://www.jonathanpollard.org/2000/011600.htm Damage to the United States - Legal Text January 16, 2000 Justice4JP Prefacing Note: This is Part One of a series of selected legal texts excerpted from the Pollard Memoranda in Aid of Sentencing. The following legal document, written in 1987, was part of a court submission in aid of sentencing. The document makes a compelling case about the Government's failure to produce a single shred of evidence of any damage done to the United States as a result of the activities of Jonathan Pollard. The government based its damage claims on potential worst-case scenarios that might occur at some future date, and not on any hard evidence. In the 13 years that have since elapsed, none of these worst-case scenarios ever occurred, and the government has yet to demonstrate a single example of any harm done to US national security. The author of this document, Richard Hibey, was Jonathan Pollard's first attorney. He is the only attorney who was permitted to see the full classified record of the Pollard case - some of it only briefly. After Hibey, the US Government never again allowed access to the classified record of the case - even to Pollard's attorneys who held all of the necessary security clearances. Consequently, Jonathan Pollard has never been permitted to challenge these documents in a court of law - a gross violation of his constitutional right to due process.

Discount Rate Set Too High slower economic growth highlights 2 trillion understatement of UK liabilities Angus Hanton Pages 3 - 12

The size of government liabilities is only now becoming apparent, but the choice of discount rate is crucial in estimating these. Historically this has been set using Green Book methods and FRS17 accounting standards, but now government is moving to using a rate based on hopedfor economic growth of 3% plus inflation. The more prudent rate to use would be the much lower gilt rate of under 1% the governments long-term index-linked cost of borrowing. Use of the 1% rate would show liabilities more than 2 trillion higher, and these will increase as the effects of using the higher discount rate unwind. Furthermore, the overoptimism from using a high discount rate can lead to poor policy decisions in pensions, government spending and strategic planning.

Targeting galectin-1 overcomes breast cancer associated immunosuppression and prevents metastatic disease. Galectin-1 (Gal1), an evolutionarily conserved glycan-binding protein, contributes to the creation of an immunosuppressed microenvironment at sites of tumor growth. In spite of considerable progress in elucidating its role in tumor-immune escape, the mechanisms underlying the inhibitory functions of Gal1 remain obscure. Here we investigated the contribution of tumor Gal1 to tumor growth, metastasis and immunosuppression in breast cancer. We found that the frequency of Gal1+ cells in human breast cancer biopsies correlated positively with tumor grade, while specimens from patients with benign hyperplasia showed negative or limited Gal1 staining. To examine the pathophysiologic relevance of Gal1 in breast cancer, we used the metastatic mouse mammary tumor 4T1, which expresses and secretes substantial amounts of Gal1. Silencing Gal1 expression in this model induced a marked reduction in both tumor growth and the number of lung metastases. This effect was abrogated when mice were inoculated with wild-type (WT) 4T1 tumor cells in their contralateral flank, suggesting involvement of a systemic modulation of the immune response. Gal1 attenuation in 4T1 cells also reduced the frequency of CD4+CD25+ Foxp3+ regulatory T (Treg) cells within the tumor, draining lymph nodes, spleen and lung metastases. Further, it abrogated the immunosuppressive function of Treg cells and selectively lowered the expression of the T-cell regulatory molecule LAT (linker for activation of T cells) on these cells, disarming their suppressive activity. Taken together, our results offer a preclinical proof of concept that therapeutic targeting of Gal1 can overcome breast cancerassociated immunosuppression and can prevent metastatic disease.
