Literacy (Including Homework)

Poetic Style Linked to roller coasters pupils will be learning about similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification, assonance and onomatopoeia. They will analyse, compare and write poems linked to roller coasters. Recounts Pupils will be developing questioning skills and will practise interviewing people. They will study newspapers and magazines before going on to write a class newspaper. Traditional stories, fables, myths and legends Pupils will study myths and legends including identifying common themes and comparing different versions of the same story. They will practise telling a story orally before going on to write their own version of a traditional tale. Homework This is given out on Friday and handed in on Tuesday. Please sign the homework record. Please encourage your child to read and sign the diary 4 x a week too.

PE 5B: Monday and Wednesday 5E: Monday and Wednesday 5M: Tuesday and Friday Swimming 5B Starting Wednesday 5th June Forest School 5B: Friday 5E: Tuesday 5M: Thursday Scream Machine This topic teaches children about forces and mechanisms all through the exciting idea of roller coasters. Engage: What are forces? Revise gravity and friction from previous learning. Explore playground equipment; make models using knex, Visit Drayton Manor! Develop: Find out about mechanisms such as pulleys, cams, hydraulics and pneumatics. Use knex roller coasters to explore how motors work. Conduct scientific investigations such as testing friction on ramps. Innovate: Design a roller coaster. Test time, distance, speed... Express: Make a video to present their ride. Bend and Flow This project has a geography focus and teaches children about rivers, rainfall, soils and the impact of water on the local community and communities. Engage: Pupils will carry out field work such as by visiting a river and collecting samples. Develop: Work covered will include the features of rivers, the water cycle, studies of World and UK rivers, river music... Innovate: Pupils apply skills by presenting a case for or against the building of a housing development near a river site. Express: Performances, presentations and Hams Hall visits.

Numeracy (Including Homework)


In Numeracy our number work will include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of larger numbers, mental maths and problem solving. We will also be studying shape and space, angles, area, volume and capacity. Mental maths is really important. Please practice for 5 minute club and 66-club. Remember for tables and simple number facts - instant recall is best. Also encourage your children to explain their methods and find quicker ways of calculating if they do not know the answer. Linked to roller coasters pupils could find out about important statistics and compare them. Pupils could work out differences, averages, Homework will demonstrate the work studied in class that week. As with Literacy, it is sent out on Friday and should be handed in the following Tuesday please. Please also check and sign your childs homework record.
