RELIGION AND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS IN CONFLICT

The Islam-critical cartoons about Prophet Muhammad that were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2005 (and many more that followed) created an outcry. The protests by Muslims resulting in more than 200 reported deaths made the conflict of freedom of religion and the freedom of the media subject to a worldwide debate that is still ongoing. However, the Muhammad controversy is part of a much bigger issue that the conference will address. It is about balancing the interest of the believers, the rights of the press that invoke freedom of speech, and the states desire to contain religious conflict. The conference will address the highly relevant question of how to get the balance right in this triangle by looking at US, German and European law. Panelists: Professor Marci A. Hamilton Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Dieter Grimm Moderator: Privatdozent Dr. Hannes Rsler Welcome: Dr. Daniel Biene, DAJV Board Member Robert Stevens, U.S. Consul for Political and Economic Affairs Following the panel discussion the DAJV is pleased to invite you to continue the discussions informally with wine and light refreshments. Please register until May 24, 2013. Registration: mail@dajv.de
