elections last night.
Khairy, the 33-year-old incum-
bent Youth deputy chief and son-
in-law of Prime Minister Datuk
Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi,
beat Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir,
45, and Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir
Toyo, 43.
It was nail-biting finish as it
took more than four hours be-
fore the votes were finally tallied
past 11pm due to recounts.
Khairy, who had been issued
a warning by the Umno discipli-
nary board for breach of ethics
in the campaign, got 304 votes
from the 793 delegates.
For supporters of Mukhriz,
the Jerlun MP and third son of
former premier Tun Dr Mahathir
Mohamad, and former Selangor
mentri besar Khir, the loss was
clearly difficult to take as they
jeered when “KJ” was chanted.

Datuk Razali Ibrahim, 39,
the Muar MP, won the deputy
chief post, beating Datuk Reezal
Merican Naina Merican, 37, who
is political secretary to outgoing
prime minister Abdullah. Razali
got 417 votes.
At the Wanita Umno polls,
Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil
thrashed incumbent chief Tan
Sri Rafidah Aziz in a contest that
was riddled with controversy
and accusations of betrayal.
Rafidah, nicknamed Iron Lady
because of her tough-talking
and no-nonsense demeanour,
collected only 280 votes against
Shahrizat’s 507 votes.
The 66-year-old veteran had
been Wanita chief for 21 years,
except for a break of one term
when she lost in 1996 to Datuk
Dr Siti Zaharah Sulaiman. She
was dropped from the cabinet
after the last general election.
Shahrizat was elected as
Rafidah’s deputy in 2000 and
became popular with her ready
smile and pleasant personality.
In her victory speech, which
Rafidah was not present to
share, Shahrizat expressed
thanks to Mahathir who gave
her the chance to contest the
Lembah Pantai parliamentary
seat 15 years ago, and to Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah
Ahmad Badawi for not giving up
on her although she lost her seat
Winner does not take all,
says new Youth chief

Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin
admitted last night he did not win
convincingly as he only got 304
votes from the 793 delegates.
“But the winner does not take
all, and the losers do not lose
all,” he said, indicating that the
other two contestants – Datuk
Mukhriz Mahathir and Datuk Seri
Dr Mohd Khir Toyo – have a role
to play in the wing.
He sincerely thanked those
who said that “KJ is over” but
promised that the people (who
make such remarks) shall not be
sidelined.
He said Umno Youth will
defend the main pillars of the
country but will show respect
to their Barisan Nasional com-
rades who show equal respect
to Umno Youth.
The wing, he said, will not
only fight for the Malays but also
other races.
