MAHB denies it is
ineffective in running
Astana airport
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airports Hold-
ings Bhd (MAHB) has denied claims by
Kazakhstan that it is ineffective in managing
the International Airport Astana (IAA).
In a statement here on Saturday, MAHB
said it started to manage the airport from May
2007 and in its first year of operations many of
the IAA’s financial, technical and operational
issues were solved to improve the perform-
ance of the airport.
On March 31, 2007, Malaysia Airports
Management & Technical Services (Labuan)
Pte Ltd (MAMTS Labuan) signed a trust man-
agement agreement with the Department of
Finance of the Astana akimat (city mayor’s
office), Kazakhstan.
MAMTS Labuan is a unit of Malaysia Air-
ports Management & Technical Services Sdn
Bhd (MAMTS), which in turn is a subsidiary
of MAHB.
The IAA was managed, operated and main-
tained by Joint Stock Company International
Airport Astana (JSC IAA), a wholly-owned
company of the Kazakhstan government.
The government has agreed to transfer the
entire state shareholding in the JSC IAA under
trust management to MAMTS Labuan.
However, in September 2008, following a
change of the airport president, the JSC IAA has
reduced the direct involvement and active partici-
pation of MAHB in the management of IAA.
“(Hence), MAHB is presently in discussion
with the government of Kazakhstan to resolve
these issues,” it said.
Currently, MAHB’s other overseas ventures
comprise the operations and management
of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in
Hyderabad, the Indira Gandhi International
Airport in Delhi and the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen
International Airport in Turkey. – Bernama

medical tourism for growth
KUALA LUMPUR: Prince Court Medical Centre,
which received an international accreditation
recently, expects to ride on medical tourism
for growth following continuous interests from
overseas patients in quality healthcare services
in Malaysia.
The Joint Commission International (JCI) is an
authority on healthcare responsible for accredit-
ing organisations which illustrate and practise
high standards of medical care.
Its chief executive officer, Stuart D. Rowley,
said the accreditation would serve as a com-
petitive edge against other private hospitals in
Malaysia to further penetrate the health industry
market beside having cutting-edge technology
for treatment.
“In order for medical tourism to be success-
ful, insurance companies and large corporate
organisations are looking for international
accreditation.
“That’s why it is imperative that we obtain the
accreditation as quickly as possible.
“Besides, we also have many departments
that have leading edge technologies and these
will really help put Malaysia on the map,” he told
Bernama recently.
Rowley said despite the current economic
situation, the medical tourism market was
expected to grow further as the majority of
medical tourists would come to seek curative
treatment rather than procedures for aesthetic
purposes.
“Fortunately or unfortunately, people always
get sick no matter how healthy or unhealthy the
economic climates, so there is always be demand
for hospitalisation and as most people have
insurance policies they are able to file a claim for
treatment,” he said.
Cheaper flights, hotel rates and medical
services in Malaysia were also factors to attract
international patients seeking better quality but
less pricey medical services, he said.
“With a 16% increase in the number of medi-
cal tourists early last year, this international ac-
creditation will play an important role in further
amplifying that percentage this year,” he said.
Currently, international patients contribute
30% to its business and locals 70%.
Beside its five centres of excellence – heart &
lung; oncology; plastic surgery, cosmetology, der-
matology & burns; urology, nephrology & men’s
health and women and children, the hospital also
provides other comprehensive range of health-
care services.
Prince Court has also invested in the Total
Hospital Information System software that helps
managing patient information from admission to
discharge making it a seamlessly operation.
Through its collaboration with the Medical
University of Vienna, the hospital also aims to
be at the forefront of establishing innovative
telemedicine, telepathology, teleradiology and
telecytogenetics services in Malaysia.
Rowley said with an additional 2.4ha opposite
the hospital, it could be expanded to cater to
rising demand in the future.
The hospital, wholly-owned by Petroliam
Nasional Bhd, currently has 300 beds, of which
77 beds have been opened, 10 operating theatres
and 63 medical consulting suites. – Bernama
