Description and Background Information

*Students will experience an in-depth learning experience using the 5E model. ( Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, & Evaluate)

What will I need to teach this lesson? What do students need to participate? Teacher: Smart board. Markers, Construction Paper, Lewis and Clark Book.

Materials
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Write measurable objective(s). Students at the end of the lesson will be able to have a basic understanding of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Through the construction of a map of the expedition. (Distance, Location, People Involved, Items that were discovered.)

Lesson Objectives

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English? Objectives will be varied for those having a tough time understanding by using a reciprocal reading activity in class to increase understanding. Those who mastered the concept will be asked to research more information that can be used on the reconstruction map. Those who are learning English objectives will be varied on how much they understand as far as the geographical location of the expiation,

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION


How will I find out what students already know about this topic? I will ask engaging questions about topics around the topic.

Pre-assessment
What will I do to make a connection between students and this lesson? I will announce to the students that they are about to embark on a journey West and will be keeping a diary about their adventures. They most do two things first (create a new identity and find a book to write in.) What will I say to explain the importance of learning this lesson? The importance of this lesson is to demonstrate how a group of people can make a difference in the country with their bravery.

What will I do to show students what is expected? I will write my expectations on the classroom board.

What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task? Classroom read aloud will be our first guided practice activity. Second practice activity will be a map trail of the Lewis and Clark expedition. What will I ask to know if students understand so far? List questions. What will I do throughout the lesson to determine if students understand the information? List activities/techniques or describe the strategies that you plan to use.

I will ask students what do they have so far in their diary entries.

What will students do to internalize the knowledge? Students will complete a paper as homework discussing the various things of the expedition. (Distance, Location, People, Discoveries, Etc) What will students do to demonstrate what they learned during the lesson? If an assessment is used, attach a copy. If using an authentic assessment, attach a copy of the scoring rubric. Students will complete authentic diary entry after the lesson is complete. The diary entry should be 3 paragraphs long containing all the information from the days adventure. How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? I will conclude the lesson by creatively closing by telling students that the group has reached the end of the travel day after constructing a map and travel log for the day.

Students can find more information by looking up more information on the travels of Lewis and Clark at their library or at home computer.

Extension Activities
How is technology meaningful to this lesson? How do you plan to use implement student used technology during the lesson? In my lesson technology isnt the most important element but it is meaningful to displaying an old U.S. map to the class.

expedition connects to math. ELA- The use of the textbook for the read aloud serves as a connector to ELA. Science- The description of the different environments encountered connects science. Art- The use of construction paper and markers to develop a recreation map of the expedition connects art. Health- The group discovered new crops such as vegetables that could be used for nutrition.

PART III IMPLEMENTATION


What worked for you during the lesson? What did not work? What changes would you make when you teach this lesson again to make it more effective? Student involvement was very key in my lesson. Key figures from the area could have been more relatable to students. I would try to make information more relatable to students by having students act as key historical figures.
