Nick Murati #207 Exceptional Adaptability Gary Paulsen wrote an adventure survival story called Hatchet and it won

the Newberry Honor; he has also won the Newberry Honor for two other books. Hatchet was published in 1987. Brian Robeson lived with his mother in New York. He was riding a Cessna 406 bush plane to see his father who lived in the oil fields in Northern Canada. But little does Brian know that he is in for more than he expected. There are several significant events that show why Brian was a truly adaptable person. To begin with, Brians pilot has had a heart attack and died! When the pilot died he nudged the controls and sent the plane straight down! Luckily Brians pilot showed him the basics about flying the plane earlier in the flight and Brian quickly got the plane straightened out. Brian was being smart and he decided to keep the planes nose up. Once Brian had ran out of fuel he decided to look for a lake to safely land the plane. He has been showing that he can quickly adapt to bad situations. Secondly, Brian was sleeping in his shelter and a noise woke him up. He was scared and kicked the animal. Brian instinctively threw his hatchet at the source of the noise and it hit the wall creating a shower of sparks and scaring the animal and he noticed that he had 8 porcupine quills in his leg! When Brian woke up he decided to finish his shelter to keep the wild animals out; first by finishing the wall and then weaving it shut with twigs. Then he decided to make a separate storing shelter for his fish. So far Brian has been showing an excellent adaptability to the wilderness.

In the third place, a vicious and wild tornado attacked Brian. After the tornado hit Brian he saw the tail of the plane sticking out of the lake and he decided to get into the plane. Brian tried to get to the plane and then decided to make a raft. Once Brian finished his raft he went out to the plane. While Brian was trying to get into the plane he dropped his hatchet and it sunk to the bottom of the lake. When Brian has decided using his surroundings to launch off of the raft to get to the bottom of the lake he finally got his hatchet back. Every chapter Brian is showing more and more adaptability. In conclusion, there are several significant events that show why Brian was a truly adaptable person. I am sure that Brian has and will impress everyone who ever read or will read this book. I myself am very impressed because I found out that almost everything that happened to Brian happened to Gary Paulsen and I highly recommend this book to anyone. When Brian was flying the plane, finishing his shelter, and getting into the plane truly shows that He has died and has been born as the new Brian.
