A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn about the first Americans to live in our community. This lesson uses the 2nd grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods. (Pg.240-245) B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: whole group reading & discussions, independent for activity and assessment C. Materials: Vocabulary & Study Guide (Unit Resources pg. 69) -24 copies Reading skill (Unit Resources pg. 68) -24 copies Reteach Mini Lesson TE 233 2nd grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods White paper and pencils Crayons/Color pencil D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o H1.2.6 Explain why important events, people, and/or customs from around the world are marked by holidays.

Student-Friendly Standards H1.2.6. I can show why important events and people mark our holidays.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 240- Get Set to Read. Explain the Reading Skill that students will complete as we read. Call students attention to the pictures on pg. 241-244 Indentify & discuss groups of people who marked important dates and events Introduce vocabulary (independence) 2. As a class, read pg. 240-245, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE 3. Students should take notes and record information on their reading skill worksheet while reading. Students can continue working on the reading skill worksheet after we are finish reading. 4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for students understanding

(TE 242) Who sent armies to control the colonists? (TE 242) What is the date of the first event shown on the timeline? (Pg. 242) (After reading pg. 243) Whom did the colonists choose to write the words explaining why the colonies wanted independence? (TE 243)What is the Declaration of Independence? (TE 243)What did the colonists show by signing the Declaration of Independence? (TE 243)When did the colonies agree on the Declaration of Independence? 5. Have students complete Study Guide/Homework (Unit Resources pg. 72) 6. Closure: the two statements in the Review/Assess section TE 244 F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? To measure students understanding I will have them complete activity pg. 243. Students will draw a picture of an important event that helped America become an independent country. Students also have to tell why that person or event is important. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must Explain why important events, people, and/or customs from around the world are marked by holidays. Drawing and telling me why that person or event is important will tell me students understand the events that happened to make America an independent country. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part to teach in my perspective is that students will be able to relate to the word independent from 4th of July. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part to teach will be assisting them pronounce some of the words, as they are long and that may frighten some students. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? For extension of this lesson, I would use Extend Lesson 4 (pg. 246,247) Two Patriots. Students would read two biographies of important leaders.

4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who dont understand the concepts in this lesson, I would use the Reteach Minilesson described at the bottom of TE 245. I would work in small groups to complete the chart. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I like the way the lesson is planned out, I dont think I would change anything. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? I think the most challenging part for all lesson plans is deciding what the assessment should be, and how it should be. I decided to have students draw and important event or person that had to do with the independence of America as a country. This will tell me if students understand that events had to happen, for us to be in an independent country.
