Now it's the Internet site people spend the most time on, with 800 million active users from ages 13 up uploading 250 million photos a day. In the U.S., the average user spends eight hours a month on Facebook; the self-admitted addict I am likely clocks that much in a week. To quote myself, Facebook eventually became "a way of life -- a heady, nonstop road I've travelled along for years, where street signs are replaced with (31/8/1963I) real-time news feeds, and my fragile ego can be crushed or swelled with pride depending on the number of people who deign to like or, even better, comment on my posts." Heck, for many Facebook practically is the Internet. dynamic dorm

(For the most part, I still do.) Worst of all, I spent hours crawling "Friends You May Know," building up a legion of 1,325 friends and 11,370 subscribers. Some of these people really are friends. Some are people I may have come across at work, gone to school with, dated or wished I'd dated. Others still are likely Fortune readers, to whom I am grateful. When for some reason I couldn't sign on, I became frustrated. It was only when I found myself refreshing the News Feed on my phone between crunches at the gym that I realized the extent of my addiction. Would it be a big deal if I waited until afterwards to check? Well, of course not. But try telling that to me as I cursed my phone reception atop the sit-up bench. I like to think there's a reason for that incident beyond a mild case of "gym rage." Facebook's charm once lay in the feeling of exclusivity it projected, a closed off virtual playground open only to a smallish group of friends where I could communicate without second thought. Education Minister Heng Sweet Keat says that employers believe Singaporean students lack drive and the confidence to venture out of their comfort zone. (Screengrab from Y! video) Young Singaporeans that Yahoo! Singapore spoke to generally agreed with Education Minister Heng Swee Keats recent comments that employers believe Singapore students lack drive and the willingness to try new things to succeed. But they also said that apart from a few brave ones, the risktaking culture was simply not part of their make-up. Rather what was foremost on their minds was a stable job and career. We are very driven in the conventional way, to lead the conventional life of earning money but no one dares to take risk, said 22-year-old NTU undergraduate Cecilia Ang. She added that students here are driven to achieve tangible results, as most are more concerned with achieving good grades and securing a stable job. Another undergraduate from Singapore Management University said part of the reason for the lack of risk-taking is that local students are used to being spoonfed. We have this perception that everything we will have in the future is going to be provided for because weve been spoonfed our entire lives, said 21-year-old Rachel Thong. Thong recognized that the lack of confidence to try new things is more of a worry, as it might lead to the drying up of creativity among entrepreneurs. Lim Shu Hui, an NTU student, also said the environment of the local education system played a huge factor. The way we were being brought up and the environment we are in might have caused us to be afraid to try out new things, said the year three undergraduate. However, the 23-year-old admitted that not all Singaporeans are risk-averse. There are an increasing number of entrepreneurs these

days. Not all are afraid to try new things. There are still some brave ones, she said. Another student from the National University of Singapore, Matthias Chia, said that Minister Hengs comments were not applicable to everyone. Not everyone is going to be a millionaire or CEO, CFOs and the like, he said. The 22-year-old said that most university students are overworked, which may be a reason why they did not try new things. Most Singaporean students have co-curricular activities, which take up time for study and research, he said. Citing union council members and sports captains as examples of such students, he added that joining new co-curricular activities outside the classroom should also be considered as venturing out of ones comfort zone. On Tuesday, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said he was surprised by how many top CEOS in Singapore had told him how Singaporean graduates lacked the drive and confidence to venture out of their comfort zone, The Straits Times reported. Speaking before 300 students at a forum at the Singapore Management University (SMU), the Minister recounted how one CEO described the response between a Singaporean worker and a European worker once promoted. When the CEO approached a European worker to take on a new role with different responsibilities, the staff asked, what sort of training will I get, how will you help me succeed, what will I do, and so on, reported ST. On the other hand, when Singaporeans were approached, they responded with negative questions of What if I fail? Do I still have a job? If there a support system, and do I get retrenchment benefits?, the paper reported.

In addition to his speech, Heng introduced a Singapore plus plus strategy to develop local talent and skilled foreigners, reported the ST. According to the paper, the strategy would address the issue of increasing competition from global giants such as China and India, which possess a huge talent base and cheap workforce. More plans on the initiative will be rolled out in a few weeks time, ST reported.

COMPREHENSION TYPES OF COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS:

THE REPHRASING QUESTION The rephrasing question requires you to express certain phrases or sentences in your own words, .i.e. you have to explain their meaning. In answering this type if question, you have to read the given phrase or sentence in its context, i.e. you have to read the given phrase or sentence in its context, i.e. you have to read what comes before or after, in order to understand its meaning fully. "I waited for Harry to appear. The minutes ticked by. It seemed like an age before he finally appeared." To understand the meaning of the phrase "an age" you have to read the two sentences before it. Then you understand "an age" to mean a very long time. Now read the following: "Once you have tracked down the animal. you must shoot it clearly." CleanLy here means killing it immediately. Notice how that meaning of clean here is related to the context of hunting, and has nothing to do with the usual meaning of clean(i.e. free of dirt.) Sometimes sentences given to you contain idioms and figures of speech , such as metaphors. For instance: 1.) The ghosts of his past misdeeds keep returning to haunt him.(He kept remembering, with guilt and fear, his pass wrongdoings.) 2.) 2.) He was convinced that his enemies, one fine day, would do him in. 3.) Question: Explain the phrase in italics 4.) Answer: It means__________________________________ THE VOCABULARY QUESTION 1.) The meaning of words Three (3) methods to unravel the meaning of words:

a)

Using Contextual clues

The meaning must be the contextual meaning, rather than the usual dictionary meaning. You must look for clues within the passage that point towards the meaning of a word. These clues could include signal words (cohesive devices) which tie the text together, punctuation marks and other parts of the text that refer to the word. The hero died a beautiful death. beautiful here means holy, pious, inspiring, and has nothing to do with the more common meaning of attractive, splendid. Gary saw the wine bottle at the corner of the room. A thought came into his mind. He could use the splinted neck to cut the rope. Splinted means_______________________________

b)

Analysing compound words (words with two or more words)

Breaking words into their componnent parts and deriving a single meaning from them. Sunblock = Sun + Block(Barrier or Hindrance) Meaning: barrier to the Sun Earthbound Look at the picture of the bird which remained earthbound.......... Earthbound means Ordinary C) Taking notes of prefixes and suffixes

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! TAKE CAREFUL NOTE THAT: THE FORM OF THE WORD GIVEN MUST BE THE SAME AS THAT OF THE GIVEN WORD. THE ANIMAL SNAPPED FEROCIOUSLY AT ME A WORD THAT HAS THE SAME MEANING IS FIERCELY(AND NOT FIERCE) THE PHRASE IN A FIERCE MANNER IS ALSO CORRECT. THE ANIMAL ATTACKED US WITH GREAT FEROCITY. THE CORRECT WORD IS NOW FIERCENESS/AGGRESSIVENESS/SAVAGERY (NOT FIERCE, AGGRESSIVE OR SAVAGE)
