Establishment of Archives center in IMM

Thursday, May 26, 2011 Hoshiba Satoru 1.Concept International Mountain Museum has opened since the year 2000. And it has some 10years history now. The number of visitors increased year by year. But Museum has to take any action to get more visitors. For example it is one ideas to organize regular event or activities often. Same time IMM recruit the researchers as well as IT technician as International standard. And provide discipline for the all the staff and workers. All the staffs and workers have to proud of themselves as part of International institute. Beside these condition the IMM must start the archives center for maintain all the digitalized information and exhibition. Let me describe the details below. 2. Main role as archives center. Make the database for existing ambitions and stored book and leaflets. Maintain the all digitalized the details and utilize these database for replace the galley. Most of the panels and photos are now getting the very poor condition and colors are fading. To replace these panels new, the digital archives give great help for renew. The database contains Name of the exhibition, coordinator, resources, copy right,period of exhibition. Background of exhibition and current position are considerable. After completion it makes easy to handle and maintain Museum exhibition. Make the database for the past Event and museum history. Past events and museum history must record and add on part of the digital archives. These archives contain the number of visitors, Visitors comments, list of the VIP visitors, museum internal activities. In case IMM must disclose the financial status in need as International museum do. Digitalize the exhibition To digitalize the panel makes easy to renew it. Colour faded panel must replace regularly depend on the condition. Digitalized exhibition has many chances for the future expanding of the collection. The technical assistant by IT contribute in different sector to make new exhibition. We can create new exhibition without present of the researcher or professionals.

As future plan IMM can collect new exhibition via internet from researcher or professionals with direct internet connection. IMM can put more exhibitions on the Internet virtual museum as well as Gallery in the IMM hall. It needs sophisticated system and capable person to handle this task. Proper maintain of the Website To maintain the own website as international standard we should follow the copy right. Therefore IMM has preserve own Photos and Images The staffs for managing the web site must have wider IT knowledge and educated person on both knowledge and humanity. Web site must keep update always and provide right information to the public. As the International standard, IMM should cooperate the other organizations like NMA, TAAN, ACAP and National park office and metrological departments in need. And publish right information as IMM. Provide the current trekking details as trial conditions, climate and others. Open the virtual museum on the web site. Collect the exhibitions from public. Introduce the Multimedia section connected with IMM and collect from public which encourage the youngsters to keep the tension about IMM. Create the Museum exhibition from Nepalese own hands. Take an action as we can do step by step. Each section (gallery keep the own introduction with digital photo frame or digital display. The presentations include movies music, then visitors can enjoy and provide strong motivation to know more about exhibitions and public awareness followed the each exhibitions. Now prices of the digital equipments go down and it is not difficult task to create own 3D images and put on the Hall. D How to tight the ropes, how to use the mountaineering equipment! These explanation should be done by multimedia in future. Show the actual tools and equipments are important for the gallery as traditional way but IMM should consider to meet the new methods for exhibition. Children in the mountain Environmental issue and Mountains These collection are applied by multimedia and photo images etc. These collected data should preserved under the IMM management and show on Vitrual museum which encourage the nationalism as Nepal citizen. Task as public relation sector It is important role to settle down the public relation sector as the part of Archives center. This sector works as part of Website which leads the increase of the number visitors. Same time this sector provide adequate information for the visitors in worldwide. Collecting digital data from academic researchers, connecting organization etc and share the data. 3. Conditions for establishments of archives center. The archives center should keep particular room in the IMM building. Recruit young and talented staffs for newly opened archives center. The staffs have wide minded person with minimum trekking experiences, English language skill and IT well IT knowledge. Furthermore the staffs keep the great ambitious with passion for the given task. Provide sufficient income for the hard task and need support for the spiritual and mental care to encourage the duties. Some equipment should replace within the machines life span. It is not enough to put initial investment. We need to introduce the depreciation concept and make budget properly year by year. When we purchase 100,000Rs as initial stage with 5years life span, every year we have to preserve the amounts 200,000Rs every year. And the depreciated amounts should remain the part of assert. Then all the tasks go on smoothly. We can use the old equipments as new gallery facilities and utilize properly. When we see the infrastructures in Nepal about power supply or internet connection, we must arrange better way. Setting of the UPS facilities in Archives center, and get proper internet connection. We must make hard ship and make efforts to get proper infrastructures. Frequent checking for the facilities minimize the operating cost. To establish this framework IMM should make efforts to adopt the good adviser from in or outside Nepal and need the train the staff for the glory future on IMM. The complete accountant system leads the stable maintenance for the renewal of the facilities.

4. Other Digital archives cut the cost of maintain Museum through IT technology as I explain above. It is considerable idea like Nepal. It is very costly to keep regular curator. IT technology links the person to person without present on the current spots. In some sense we need to take action in face to face. Keep some few archives professionals contribute great achievements as International Mountain Museum in Pokhara. Hope in near future this framework comes true and get good and unique reputation among the museum in the world. To establish the archives center, NMA and IMM must recognize the meaning of it. Once the NMA and IMM motivate this concept, they should try and act independently and in need it is one of the ways to get support by JICA or some other international Organizations.
