INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Write your name, Centre number, candidate number and question number clearly on the top right-hand corner of the front of each sheet of paper. Choose one of the subjects overleaf. In some cases, candidates may not be able to represent some of the subjects listed from first-hand observation during the examination itself, in particular landscapes or townscapes. In these cases, it is permissible to produce supporting studies from first-hand observation and to produce the final examination piece using the supporting studies as a reference point. In addition to the examination piece, up to three sheets of supporting work should be submitted. These should be the sheets of preparatory work undertaken after the receipt of this question paper. All sheets must be correctly labelled and securely fastened at the top left-hand corner.

2 Candidates should make a study or studies from direct observation from one of the following. They may consult the Art Teacher if they wish. Studies may be of either the whole or part of the subject. Small specimens or details may be enlarged.

Still Life Group Either (a) Three decorated bowls or jugs of different sizes arranged to form an interesting group against a plain coloured cloth. A fourth object of your choice should be included. The background must be part of your drawing or painting. (b) A still life group made up of fruits and flowers. Another object may be included. The background must be shown in the work.

Natural and Man-made Forms Either (a) Glass bottles or jars which are filled or partly filled with coloured crystals, stones or other objects of your choice. (b) A number of hanks, skeins and balls of coloured wools and a pair of knitting needles. (c) Three twigs, each bearing very different leaves, lie together on a sheet of newspaper.

The Human Form Either (a) A person sits at an ironing board or table, as though ironing clothing. The whole figure must be drawn or painted and a background must be included. (b) A figure is seated as described in part (a) with an additional person seated alongside as though engaged in conversation. (c) The head, shoulders, arms and hands of a person, who is sketching, should form the composition for a portrait.

Landscape or Townscape It is permissible to produce your supporting studies from first-hand observation and to produce your final examination work from those studies during the examination itself. Either Or (a) A view from an upper window of nearby countryside or streets. (b) A scene in a park where trees are seen together with statues or monuments.
