At the very heart of the spectacular Causeway Coast and Glens the communities of Ballycastle town and Rathlin Island welcome you to celebrate and enjoy all things maritime during the Rathlin Sound Maritime Festival. This programme is a guide to the activities and events that are part of this years Festival. From the adrenaline rush of the Sailing Regatta and races as well as exciting have a go activities, to tempting food and craft markets, seriously scenic guided walks, exciting and informative talks and tours, exhibitions and demonstrations, fun competitions, laid back lunches, friendly giants and beautiful sea queens, currachs and Viking ships, theres plenty to choose from including fantastic family friendly events. During your stay try some of our great local produce, seafood of course as well as many other fantastic menu options to tempt your taste buds. Weve also arranged a wide variety of Festival entertainment for you to enjoy, from evening parades and concerts, exclusive performances from big name bands and solo performers including Bap Kennedy, Skerryvore, Bagatelle, Amanda St John, Baillies Mills and more as well as informal get togethers and a host of other entertainment options from traditional music to uillean pipes and beach parties theres plenty going on at various venues including all our great local cafes, bars and restaurants. This is a place rich in ancient and maritime history, culture, heritage and legends, full of sleepy villages, bustling towns, sweeping glens, and idyllic islands, a land of giants, tragic princesses and stunning land and seascapes. ART EXHIBITION
6 Church Bay, Rathlin Island from 2pm to 5.30pm today until 27th May. The exhibition will feature paintings by artists including Judith Yarrow, Angela Ginn, and Susan Hughes who have spent time on Rathlin and stayed at Kinramer Cottage (camping barn) over the years. Also includes a photography exhibition of north coast caves including Bruces Cave by Andy McInroy. Hosted by Kinramer Cottage camping barn, venue supplied by kind permission of Gerry McFaul.

BALLYCASTLE SAILING REGATTA
from 10am to 4pm. Cruising yacht races today. Lots of excitement as you watch competitors compete and display their skills and experience. Hosted by Ballycastle Marina and Cushendall Sailing and Boating Club.

HAVE A GO/ INTRODUCTION ACTIVITIES


Have a go at some of these great activities including introductions to kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding, diving, sailing, and coasteering. Located at various sites around Ballycastle beach & seafront & on Rathlin Island with activities running throughout the Festival dates. JAMES BLANEY STOKER ON THE TITANIC


a talk by local Titanic Expert Sean McMichael from 2.30pm to 3.30pm at Ballycastle Library. Learn about the local Ballycastle connections to the Titanic. Sean has lectured on TITANIC cruise ship and has carried out research concerning Ballycastle in relation to the story of James Blarney who died on the Titanic and to the wider story of migration from the Ballycastle area. During his talk, he uses a unique set of past and present photos to illustrate and recreate life 100 years ago in Ballycastle, along with rare documents to illustrate the story. MEET OUR FRIENDLY LOCAL GIANTS FINN MACOOL AND HIS WIFE OONAGH
who are coming over from the Giants Causeway to Ballycastle Seafront between 2pm and 4pm today. Say Hello and maybe have a photograph. Finns great rival, the Scottish giant Benadnonner will also be travelling across the water to join in the festivities. Call in to Ballycastle Visitor Information Centre at Portnagree House Harbour and Marina Visitor Centre on Bayview Road to collect a special Festival coupon giving you discounted entry into the Giants Causeway Visitor Experience. BALLYCASTLE BIG LUNCH


Ballycastle seafront 12.00 noon to 2pm. Bring a rug and picnic. A great excuse to get together and enjoy an open air lunch. SEA SOUNDS, EVENING MUSIC

Seriously good music with performances from headline act Bap Kennedy, a professional Irish singer/songwriter who has toured & performed with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and at the Royal Albert Hall. Also performing will be Mama Kaz a singer song writer and blues powerhouse from Belfast, Wookalily with their americana/ bluegrass style, Belfast based singer songwriter Amanda St John and local 2 piece cover band Its All Gone Pete Sean. by Dr Aidan McMichael, local Titanic Expert and Secretary of Belfast Titanic Society, 7pm at the Central Bar, Ballycastle. Dr Aidan McMichael is an expert on the life and times of Robert Welch, Titanics photographer and his connections, particularly to Ballycastle and north Antrim. He has carried out unique research in relation to Ballycastles Titanic connections, has spoken widely and published articles on Robert Welch and the Titanic. Hosted by Ballycastle Rotary Club.

2-3pm, Parochial Hall, Rathlin Island. A chance to learn more about local history and maritime shipwrecks. Ian has had a lifetimes interest in Ulsters maritime history. From Bangor, Co Down, his published work includes Shipwrecks of the Ulster Coast, HMS Drake. Rathlin Island Shipwreck and Donegal Shipwrecks, and he has lectured and broadcast regularly. The Drontheim or Greencastle Yawl was once a familiar sight on Irelands North coast and the nearby Scottish islands as the traditional sailing fishing boat for generations of fishermen, descended from the Viking ships. Richard Branson Centre, 2pm Rathlin Island. A chance to learn more about the rich recent and prehistoric history of Rathlin from Dr Wes Forsythe, Lecturer at the Centre for Maritime Archeology, University of Ulster. Wes led a five-year survey of Rathlins archaeology to shed important new light on the islands earliest prehistoric human inhabitants and is co author of the book Boats and Shipwrecks of Ireland and of Rathlin Island: An archaeological survey of a marine landscape. starting 7pm to 9.30pm, inside the marquee, Rathlin harbour area. More seriously great music starting from 7pm with Peter McShannon followed by headline act Skerryvore, from 8pm to 9.30pm. BAGATELLE PLAY RATHLIN
