Event to fund Percheron Park
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Sitting on the corner of West
Main and High streets is a void
where a representation of
Moorestown history eventually
will be displayed. The Friends of
the Percheron Park are getting
closer to seeing the beginning
days of construction when Burris
Construction hosts its open house
for the park.
All proceeds from the event go
toward construction.
According to spokeswoman
Julie Maravich, the fundraiser
would cover not only the entire
construction of the park, but also
a portion of the life-size bronze
statue of a Percheron horse.
We are really on our way, she
said.
The initial idea for Percheron
Park was presented in 2011 in
honor of Edward Harris Jr. of
Moorestown. Harris, the former
resident of the Smith-Cadbury
Mansion, encountered the
Percheron breed while visiting
France in 1839.
According Percheron Parks
website, Harris made several im-
portations of the horse because of
the breeds stamina and strength.
His plan was to begin a breeding
program to improve the work-
horses in the U.S., the website
said.
The estimated construction
cost for the park is approximately
$200,000, Maravich said in a previ-
ous report to The Sun.
The township purchased the
property in 2008 for approximate-
ly $350,000. Puritan Oil previously
used the land as a gas station, so a
company is monitoring the
grounds to make sure the land is
safe, Maravich said.
Construction would not begin
until then, but the funds would be
readily available.
The parks creation would con-
nect and bring awareness to the
Moorestown Historical Society,
which is tucked away atop a small
hill on High Street.
Maravich said Percheron
horseshoe prints will lead the
way to the Smith-Cadbury Man-
sion home of the historical soci-
ety.
She said the park would con-
nect Main Street pedestrians to
Moorestown history.
According to project manager
Nick Keenan, for the past three
years, Burris Construction has
hosted an annual open house to
benefit a nonprofit organization.
Last year, owner Bill Burris
and his wife, Linda, decided to do-
nate open house proceeds to the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Socie-
ty.
Keenan said Linda and Bill de-
cided to contribute this year to an

Council
approves
naming
rights
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Moorestown Sun
Moorestown is getting clos-
er to the beginning stages of
athletic and recreational field-
naming rights and advertising
after council approved an ordi-
nance on first reading estab-
lishing a sponsorship pro-
gram.
The ordinance allows the
township to have complete
control over the program.
This is going to be the first
of its kind in New Jersey,
where the township would ac-
tually control [the program],
Township Manager Scott
Carew said.
Council looked into the
sponsorship program as a way
to increase township revenues,
helping with improvements
and maintenance to the recre-

organization that was close to
home.
They are always trying to get
involved in Moorestown as much
as possible, he said.
Last year, they donated $5,000
toward Swedes Run Barn, help-
ing the reconstruction project
move forward.
Last year, the open house had a
new feature added, and it will be
around again this year. Main
Street pedestrians might notice a
Fiat sitting on the front lawn of
Burris Construction.
The Fiat seemed to catch a lot
of peoples attention, Keenan
said.
Keenan said the Fiat will be
raffled off at the event.
Last year, 250 to 300 people
showed up at the open house and
$30,000 was raised just on the Fiat
raffle tickets.
This year, they are looking to
raise $35,000 in Fiat raffle tickets,
which are sold at $100 each. The
admission ticket is a separate fee
of $50 per person.
Keenan did not have the exact
number of tickets currently sold,
but he said between vendors, resi-
dents stopping by the office to
purchase tickets, as well as Bur-
ris employees and their friends
and family, selling 350 raffle tick-
ets and matching last years par-
ticipation rate is going to be a
breeze.
In addition to donating all pro-
ceeds to the Percheron Park con-
struction, Maravich said Burris
is going to match the car magnet
and name engraving sales in ma-
terials and labor, which adds up
to $38,000.
We are so excited. We are real-
ly hoping that, with the whole
fundraiser, we will be able to do
the whole shebang, Maravich
said.

PAIN
How does the pain reliever know to go where your body hurts?
It doesn't! In this country we treat pain like it was a deficiency of
some pain medication. Pain is a warning sign that tissue in the body
is damaged. When we take a pain reliever it does nothing to correct
what is causing the pain, it just decreases the pain signal in the
brain. Many pain relievers are Marketed for their Anti Inflammatory
benefit, however Ice would be a safer alternative. Pain relievers are
necessary when you have your wisdom teeth out, but the experience
is short term and not a way of life. Chiropractic is trying to locate the
cause of the pain. Many conditions result from nerve interference in
the spine. Chiropractic can locate that nerve interference.

M
oney is always an issue.
Families are constantly
pinching pennies, looking
for ways to reduce expenses. School
districts and municipal governments
are doing the same, hoping to help
lower, or at least stabilize, the amount
of tax money they require to live in
town.
The challenge has always been, and
will continue to be, how these entities
can control costs while still providing
high-quality services that their resi-
dents demand. The state of New Jersey
certainly isnt helping much through
aid, and its unlikely that will change
any time soon.
So the onus is on the local municipal
governments and school districts to get
creative: Not only what can be cut from
expenses, but what can be added to rev-
enues.
For awhile now, the idea of private
sponsorship of public facilities has
been tossed around. Selling banners to
local businesses at Little League fields,
or having that business sponsor a
youth sports team has been the norm
for quite some time. And no one seems
to have a problem with that.
But throw in the possibility of sell-
ing naming rights at a field or, worse
even, a building or complex, and excep-
tions start to arise. When is enough
enough? the detractors ask. Does
everything need to be sold?
We agree that there is a fine line be-
tween tasteful, effective sponsorship
and over-the-line, banner-on-every-
inch-of-the-field advertising. Think
Major League 2 here (for all you
sports movie fans).
Moorestown Township recently ap-
proved an ordinance on first reading
that, if passed, would establish an offi-
cial sponsorship program. Officials
say that the program would increase
township revenues and help with im-
provements and maintenance of recre-
ational fields.
Annual banner and sponsorship op-
portunities will be available, with nam-
ing rights being offered as five- or 10-
year deals, with minimum bids of
$5,000 and $35,000, respectively. To en-
sure proper material, businesses wont
be allowed to advertise the sale of alco-
hol, tobacco, adult-oriented material or
other items not consistent with pro-
moting the youth sports program and
the positive image of the township.
We applaud Moorestown Township
for its work in this regard, and we urge
other townships to follow suit.
If done correctly, sponsorships and
naming rights can provide a huge in-
flux of cash to youth sports leagues, to
school districts and to municipal gov-
ernments.

Reader feels sorry for Boy Scout,
would have welcomed a dog park
I read with interest how the neighbors went to town
council to reject the dog park in their neighborhood.
I feel sorry for the Boy Scout.
But years ago, 30-plus, I tried to stop low-income hous-
es built across from me. My, how times have changed.
I lost my bid to stop the housing. Of course, I was the
only one against. Now, I own a home to give away.
Someday, I hope to sell, but I wont hold my breath.
Good luck next time to the Boy Scout. I would have
welcomed a dog park.

Marine veteran endorsed
for seat in 7th district
A decorated Marine Corps vet-
eran, a successful businessman, a
dedicated family man, a youth
sports coach, and, by all ac-
counts, a rising Republican star
these things define Jeffrey T.
Banasz Jr., who the Burlington
County Republican Party
has enthusiastically endorsed for
a seat in the New Jersey General
Assembly from the 7th
District.
An active Republican residing
in Moorestown, Banasz s biogra-
phy is a story of remarkable ac-
complishment and leadership.
Banasz graduated from the
U.S. Naval Academy in 2000, and
served for five years as an ar-
tillery officer in the Marine
Corps, rising to the rank of cap-
tain.
In early
2003, he was
fully engaged
in Operation
Iraqi Freedom
leading a pla-
toon of 58
Marines,
without casu-
alties, during
the initial as-
sault and sub-
sequent com-
bat operations.
His dedicated service, not sur-
prising, resulted in several
awards, medals and commenda-
tions, including the Iraq Cam-
paign Medal (with two battle
stars), the Combat Action Rib-
bon, the Presidential Unit Cita-
tion, and the Navy & Marine
Corps Achievement Medal, just
to name a few.
His last assignment in the
Marines was as the operations of-
ficer for the recruiting station in
Baltimore, where he supervised
fiscal, administrative and logisti-
cal functions.
Today, Banasz is an insurance
broker with The Graham Compa-
ny in Philadelphia, charged with
a new challenge, namely design-
ing risk management programs
for large local companies in high
hazard industries.
He and his wife, Tara, are par-
ents to three young children. Ba-
nasz, who was team captain of
the Naval Academy ice hockey
team, spends free time coaching
youth sports, notably baseball
and street hockey.

Athletic clubs to split proceeds after costs
ational fields.
According to Carew, the town-
ship and athletic clubs would
split the proceeds after costs relat-
ed to the program are covered.
The program would offer annu-
al banner sponsorship opportuni-
ties as well as field-naming rights.
He said the township will col-
lect the money for the banners,
and volunteers from the athletic
and recreational organizations
would help solicit those funds.
Field banners for 2013 (June to
Dec. 1) are $400 for most fields and
$600 for the turf fields. Costs for
2014 banners are still being deter-
mined, according to Taylor De-
sign Group representatives.
The 3- by 6-foot banners would
be placed on the fencing facing in-
ward toward spectators.
Field-naming rights range
from five- to 10-year terms with a
minimum bid of $5,000 for five
years on smaller fields and a min-
imum of $35,000 for 10 years for
one of the turf fields.
Taylor Design representatives
said businesses are not allowed to
advertise the sale of alcohol, to-
bacco, adult-oriented material or
any other items that are not con-
sistent with promoting the youth
sports program and the positive
image of the township.
Additional facilities or build-
ings would be considered in the
future.
Board members are excited
about the program.
Councilman Greg Newcomer
said the sports organizations
have spent time and effort trying
to help with this process, trying to
contribute as much as possible.
He said the soccer club and the
Moorestown Youth Baseball Fed-
eration have contributed to many
things in the town for many
years, but recently, their contribu-
tions have exceeded previous do-
nations.
Its an enormous amount of
time, money and organization,
he said.
Deputy Mayor Chris Chiacchio
said this is a reasonable way to
bring in revenues for the town-
ship to help pay for upkeep.
The program is a great benefit
to our town as it will provide a
perpetual revenue stream to the
town and our sports communi-
ties. In the end, its another exam-
ple of how this great community
came together to do something
that is truly unique, he said.
The second reading of the ordi-
nance is scheduled for the coun-
cils next meeting on May 6.
Civility Pledge
A month after council accepted
Newcomers Civility Pledge, he
said he has seen interest in fellow
board members to stick to the
pledge.
Newcomer said the pledge was
intended to keep the council mov-
ing forward productively and
keep the best interest of the resi-
dents in mind when making deci-
sions.
Our town is a unique, irre-
placeable oasis filled with gifted,
giving people. We will strive to-
ward collaborative and coopera-
tive progress, preserving the best
of our towns heritage while lay-
ing the groundwork for its fu-
ture, Newcomer said in the
pledge. To view a full copy of the
Civility Pledge, visit

Town hall/library project
The new town hall is one step
closer to going green.
Council approved a resolution
allowing Rutgers University to re-
ceive grant funding for the instal-
lation of a water cistern, roof
garden and rain garden.
According to Carew, there are
more than $100,000 in features
that the grant will cover.

OPEN HOUSE
Sunday, May 5th 10am-1pm Friends School wins 17th
annual Consumer Bowl
Moorestown Friends School
won the 17th annual Southern Re-
gional Consumer Bowl Competi-
tion at Burlington County College
on Thursday, April 18.
The Burlington County repre-
sentative, MFS, finished over
Cedar Creek High School from At-
lantic County.
This is the third straight year
that MFS advanced to the finals as
winners of the South Jersey re-
gion.
Speaking to the students before
the competition, Burlington
County Freeholder Director Joe
Donnelly acknowledged the hard
work and dedication that it took
each team to reach the regional fi-
nals. While he wished all of the
students the best of luck, Donnel-
ly noted that, I am incredibly
proud of the Burlington County
students from Moorestown
Friends and am rooting for them
to succeed.
Friends won their first round
matchup against West Deptford
High School of Gloucester County
130-90.
Moorestown Friends will now
advance to the State Consumer
Bowl Finals against the champi-
ons from North and Central Jer-
sey in Trenton. The game-show
format of the competition tests
students knowledge of consumer
and weights and measures issues.
Moorestown Friends received the
team trophy as it did after defeat-
ing 12 schools, more than in any
other county, in the Burlington
County competition in February.
The competition is sponsored
by the New Jersey Division of
Consumer Affairs and hosted by
Burlington County College.
The winning Moorestown
Friends team consists of: Ashley
Cartwright, Roy Thorstenson,
Kirsten Mullen, Tia DCosta,
Katherine Thai, Barbara Kreider
(teacher/advisor) and Laurence
Van Meter (principal).

The 2013 edition of the
Moorestown CROP Walk is
scheduled to take place on Sun-
day, May 5, at 2 p.m. For those not
familiar with this annual event,
it solicits donations to fight
hunger both globally and locally.
Under the theme Ending
Hunger One Step at a Time, the
event supports the Scriptural
message, Lord, when was it that
we saw you hungry or
thirstyand did not take care of
you? (Matthew 25:44).
Monies raised by participants
through per-mile pledges as well
as contributions from the public
support programs of Church
World Service (www.church-
worldservice.org), a joint Chris-
tian ministry organization of 37
different denominations, as well
as the work of local food banks to
combat hunger here in South Jer-
sey.
The walk will leave from the
First United Methodist Church
(Camden and Pleasant Valley Av-
enues).
Participants should register
and sign-in at 1:30 p.m. Water
and bathroom facilities will be
available at checkpoints along
the walk, and there will be re-
freshments for the walkers when
they return to the Methodist
church. The five-mile scenic
course that walkers will follow
through Moorestown (or optional
shorter three-mile and one-mile
routes for those individuals who
prefer a shorter course) is meant
to symbolize the reality that so
many people in the world face
who must walk many miles each
day to obtain food and drinking
water.
Currently, more than 2,000
communities across the U.S. join
in more than 1,600 CROP Hunger
Walks each year.
The Moorestown CROP Walk
has been held annually for the
past three decades. More than 5
million CROP Hunger Walkers
have participated in more than

United Way raises $4.3
million to help residents
Members of Burlington Coun-
tys business and nonprofit com-
munity joined the United Way of
Greater Philadelphia and South-
ern New Jersey in Burlington
County on Friday, April 13, for a
celebration marking the close of
this years annual campaign and
announcing an impressive
$4,360,000 raised to support UWG-
PSNJs work to improve educa-
tion, income and health for resi-
dents in the county.
The program was led by Ed
OMalley, practice leader Mid-At-
lantic Region for Gallagher Bene-
fits Services and chairman of the
Local Operating Board. Nearly
100 companies and organizations
were highlighted for exceptional
service and fundraising efforts.
Among those recognized: Ameri-
Health, Liberty Bell Bank, Hol-
man Enterprises, American Red
Cross, Express Scripts, TD Bank,
Lockheed Martin and South Jer-
sey Legal Services were present-
ed with the Award of Excellence
for combined employee or corpo-
rate giving of $20,000 or more.
OMalley also highlighted the
benefits of the recent merge of
seven local United Ways At-
lantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape
May, Cumberland, Delaware
Counties, Greater Philadelphia
and Southeast Delaware County
to form UWGPSNJ last July. This
campaign was the first region-
wide fundraising effort which tar-
geted a $60 million goal.
By harnessing the power of
each individual United Way, re-
sources are better positioned to
achieve greater impact, OMal-
ley said. Together, we are able to
garner more support and further
our mission to improve educa-
tion, income and health for resi-
dents throughout the region.
In addition, the prestigious
Lawrence D. Epstein Volunteer of
the Year Award an award dedi-
cated in memory of Lawrence D.
Epstein for his exemplary service
to United Way was presented to
Liberty Bell Bank President
Kevin Kutcher. A resident of
Moorestown, Kutcher has served
UWGPSNJ in Burlington for
many years in a variety of volun-
teer roles. These include service
on the Campaign Cabinet, Fi-
nance and Executive Committees
as well as the Board of Directors
since 2000. He also led the 2007
and 2008 campaigns as general
campaign chair, which raised a
collective $10 million for Burling-
ton County. Currently, Kutcher
sits on the Regional Board of Di-
rectors
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield is seeking $321,000
in grant funding to support three
county safety programs.
The funding, from the New Jer-
sey Division of Highway Traffic
Safety, will expand Stanfields
child passenger safety program,
pedestrian safety program, and
comprehensive traffic safety pro-
gram.
The safety of Burlington
County residents is our top prior-
ity, Stanfield said. These proj-
ects combine education with
tough multi-jurisdictional en-
forcement. We anticipate that
this will have a significant impact
on traffic safety in our county.
Stanfields child passenger
safety program is extremely pop-
ular with families who have small
children. Child passenger safety
technicians are fully trained and
must recertify every two years in
order to participate in this pro-
gram.
We have inspected over 10,500
seats since we began this pro-
gram in 1998, Stanfield said.
Historically, almost 90 percent of
the seats we check have been in-
stalled incorrectly.
The sheriff requested an addi-
tional $7,000 for the 2012-13 Child
Passenger Safety Program which
ends on Sept. 30 to hold six addi-
tional safety events and to pur-
chase 40 child safety seats that we
distribute to families that are un-
able to provide their own. A total
of $26,000 has been requested for
the next year that runs from Oct.
1 to Sept. 30, 2014.
This will enable Stanfield to
provide 20 child safety seat
events, 30 education programs,
and purchase additional child
safety seats.
The pedestrian safety program
is new this year. Stanfield is re-
questing $30,000 for a countywide
pedestrian enforcement project
that will begin on July 1 and run
through June 30, 2014. Pedestrian
fatalities in the county rose sig-
nificantly during 2012, and we
have already experienced several
pedestrian fatalities at the start of
2013.
This project will use a three-
prong approach of education, en-
forcement, and engineering to ad-
dress the important issue of
pedestrian safety, Stanfield said.
The Sheriff s Department has
officers trained by the state to
conduct pedestrian decoy opera-
tions and will partner with local
municipal police departments
throughout the county. Both driv-
ers and pedestrians will be given
warnings along with information
about pedestrian traffic laws.
Traffic safety is also a priority
for Burlington County Sheriff
Stanfield. She has requested
$258,000 for this program; $75,000
will be added to the existing Com-
prehensive Traffic Safety Grant,
which runs from now to Sept. 30.
These funds will be used for
proactive traffic enforcement
along the 23 miles of the Route
130 corridor that runs through
Burlington County.
For the 2013-14 year,Stanfield
has asked for $150,000 for the
Route 130 corridor. The remain-
ing grant funds will allow the
sheriff to continue free defensive
driving classes, crossing guard
training, the Share the Keys pro-
gram for teen drivers and their
parents, bike and pedestrian safe-
ty education programs and gener-
al public awareness initiatives
about driving safety.
For more information about
the various programs and servic-
es provided by Stanfield, visit the
county website at
www.co.burlington.nj.us or call
(609) 265-5128.
