Dialysis - An Artificial Kidney Biology AQA GCSE
6 DIALYSIS AN ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY If kidneys fail, toxins such as urea build up in the body and the salt and water balance of the body is lost. (Homeostasis) Dialysis = the process of cleaning the blood through a dialysis machine when the kidneys have failed. Dialysis fluid contains: Same conc of glucose and mineral ions as normal plasma = so no net movement of glucose + useful mineral ions out of the blood. Normal plasma levels of mineral ions = excess ions lost along conc gradient, but no more No urea therefore strong conc gradient from blood to fluid = all urea leaves blood. There is no AT only diffusion. Disadvantages: Must follow a carefully controlled diet Regular long sessions connected to dialysis machine But dialysis means life rather than death for many people with kidney failure.
