A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 2nd grade students to learn about the concept of scarcity, and why people cannot have everything they want. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 2nd grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: whole group for read aloud, discussions, activity, and assessment. C. Materials: The Lorax by Dr. Seuss White board, markers This lesson was retrieved from: http://msbs2ndgradeeconunit.weebly.com/activity5.html D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E9.2.1 Give examples of what is given up when choices are made.

Student-Friendly Standards E9.2.1 I can give examples of what is given up when choices are made.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher will read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss aloud to students. 2. Throughout the story and at the end, stop to ask questions: What type of resources were the Truffula trees? Who remembers what the Thneeds were made from? Why did consumers love Thneeds so much? What kids of resource was the Super-Axe-Hacker? (Towards the end of the story) What happened to all the Truffula trees? Emphasize that the trees became scarce due to overuse of the natural resource.

3. Introduce vocabulary (scarcity, resources). 4. Identify and discuss the concept of scarcity. Write the term on the board with its definition: not being able to meet all wants at the same time because resources are limited.

5. Connect the idea of scarcity to the Dr. Seuss book, explaining that the trees became scarce because there were so many people that wanted a good that was made from them. 6. Provide examples of scarce goods and services: types of jobs or work, strawberries and other out-of-season fruits, etc. 7. As a class, come up with a list of goods and services that can be scarce on the board. Encourage all students to participate. 8. CLOSURE: Emphasize that people have to make important economic choices because resources can sometimes be scarce. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Create a list on the board: As a class we will create a list of goods and services that can be scarce on the board. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must give examples of what is given up when choices are made. Having them help to create a list will show if they grasp the concept of this lesson. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest part will be reviewing the concept of scarcity because they learned about this in the previous lesson. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I dont think this lesson will be challenging because they will have some background knowledge of the concept. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would extend this lesson by having students write three sentences in their journal that answers the prompt: Why cant we have everything we want? 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept, I can pull them back in small groups and spend time reviewing the concept of scarcity and types of resources. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I think I would have students work in small groups to come up with a list of goods and services.
