TACLOBAN CITY- At least three men were arrested by the police authorities in Sta. Margarita, Samar last April 30 for violation of the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). The three suspects, Cezar Saloritos, 39; Diego Calagos, 24 and Ireneo Dealagdon, 38, were arrested in a Comelec checkpoint located in Barangay Balud. The three are now detained at the lock-up cell of the Sta. Margarita police station and are facing charges for gun ban violation under Comelec Resolution Number 9561-A. to page 9
And one of them was Irene Fevidal, who said that she intends to submit her application letter to various establishments participating in the job fair. The 30-year old jobseeker from Barangay 59-B, Sagkahan of this city, said that at present she is on the job-training in a laundry shop reason why she is still looking for better employment. I just hope that I will be hired. I want a job that oers a better pay compared to what I earn right now, Fevidal said as she was filling up five of her application letters, which she would submit to business establishments ranging from an information and technology company seeking for data encoder; a hotel in need of housekeeping personnel; and an oce looking for an administrative sta. She also submitted an application for a possible overseas work. Fevidal once worked as a domestic help in Kuwait from August, 2011 up to June, 2012 only to return home due to the cruelty of her lady employer. Her present work in a laundry shop gives her P120 as her daily wage which is way below the current daily wage of P260 as approved by the Department of Labor and Employment. Labor assistant regional director Cyril Ticao earlier said that during the job fair sponsored by their oce, 34 local establishments and five recruitment agencies for overseas work had participated in the regional job fair. About 2,000 job opportunities were available for those who went to the job fair. CAMP KANGLEON, Palo, Leyte The Police Regional Oce 8 (PRO8) is confident of a peaceful conduct of the midterm elections in Eastern Visayas in spite of a shooting incident in Calbayog City on Tuesday afternoon resulting in the death of a village chair and the wounding of two others. Eastern Visayas remains peaceful less than two weeks before the elections. Continuous implementation of election-related security measures is being undertaken by our men, said Police Chief Superintendent Elmer Ragadio Soria, PRO8 regional director. Soria made the assessment amid a shooting incident in Calbayog City in Samars first district resulting in the death of Brgy. Bagong Lipunan chairman Amado Lauyon and the wounding of his son, Rindo, and bystander Donie Palomas. This is an isolated incident and it will not in any way aect the electoral proceedings in the area or create a form of political tension that could eventually upset the electoral process, he added. Some community leaders were invited to sit as panel of reactors. Reverend Father Fred Placa, pastoral director
and provincial chairman of NAMFREL stressed the purpose of holding a candidates forum. Candidates forum is an opportunity for the candidates to present their platforms of government on good governance, peace and order, environment or any issues aecting Northern Samar. It is aimed at ensuring peaceful and meaningful, asking the candidates to abide by the rules prescribed by the Comelec. Also to let the candidates and the people know that there are people behind working for a meaningful elections., Fr. Placa pointed out. In the forum today, the parties will be asked to draw lots for the order of their presentation. The program proper starts with an invocation by Fr. Julius Balanquit, chairman on worship and Liturgy of the Diocese of Catarman; a welcome message by Fr. Potenciano Dulay, Vicar Forane of Catarman Vicariate, a message from provincial election supervisor Antonio Gulay and an inspirational message by Most Reverend Emmanuel Trance, bishop of Catarman.

Here we will also know if our candidates truly know the real situations in Northern Samar. The main purpose why we are holding elections is to select our leaders; and we expect that the leaders are leaned towards good governance. , Fr. Delizon said. TACLOBAN CITY Relative to this years Labor Day celebration, vice mayoralty candidate of this city, Councilor Jerry Yaokasin, continue his pro-job, pro business slogan. I am a pro-job and pro-business for this is a way to help the Taclobanon uplift their lives and strive for their daily needs, Yaokasin said in an interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express. He added that the city has the need to create a business environment, for its people to have a source of income. If there would be new business establishments opened in this city, then we would create many job opportunities to our people. Kung may nego-
syo, may trabaho, Yaokasin said. As noted the Yaokasin family owned several business establishments here. With the presence of these establishments, hundreds of Taclobanons are hired. It is our dream to make the business environment here prosper. It is prospers, many of Taclobanons would be employed, he added. Having the objective to make the business environment prosperous, Yaokasin encourages the businessmen to put up establishments here. We hope that more business owners would come to Tacloban. A businessman somehow needs to take some risks in opening their business in one
area. According to him, when there is enough job opportunities here, Taclobanons would no longer migrate to other places to seek for employment. We would not just help them employed; we would also boost the economy of the city and help it become progressive. However, the ocial said that education also needs be given attention, for it serves to be one with the qualification that employers look into during employment. Job creation and education are two of the major concern that we need to address here, the vice mayoralty candidate said. (REY GERILLA GRADO)

present administration of President Benigno Aquino III, we are somehow seeing the light of day. This, then, may have been that day which we are waiting for. As such, we should be happy and proud that at last, our economy is on the rise and, though it may not be felt soon by the poorest of the poor, our collective economic status will eventually improve in the near future. At least, there is an upward movement of our economy, and the government is dead serious in maintaining that trend primarily through its anti-corruption activities.

of high level of return of investment through achievement in science. Some questions stalk the Filipino science community, viz., Why do we compare Philippine science performance with Asian Countries ONLY? This writer uses to talk to his students (underand graduate), to aim high numerically for a hundred percent in their school work and not just to think of getting a passing mark an analogy likened to comparing the Philippines science achievement with the more advanced occidental countries, instead? Failing to equal or out-rank the scientifically advanced countries, would still find the country performing way up the present notencouraging level. It is never too late to do something to elevate science subject as early as Grades ! and 2 under the Present Dispensations muchvaunted, hurriedly implemented K to 12 program, even before a specific Law could be passed and approved! DepEd should go back to the drawing board review, rethink and redesign the curricula for the K to 12 BSP as far as emphasis in Science is concerned. This writers sojourn in other countries, oriental and occidental, convinces him to believe that by starting/exposing pupils/students in science from his/her younger years and onwards, could instill in their young minds the essence of science and find for themselves why science holds the key to development and progress. An investment in science through the new BSP assures the Philippines of producing a good population of science-oriented young Filipinos, discards old practices in doing things in favor of more S & T-enhanced methodologies, keeps the country at par not only with its neighboring countries, while increasing the accepted number of R & D workers perceived by UNESCO (at least, 350 per million population. We barely have 250 Filipino scientists actively doing R & D activities as against Japans 8,000 R & D scientists per million!). The rulers of this country in the 1980s must have had other priorities, but definitely such utter disregard of teaching science as a separate subject in the elementary grades explains for the present state of S & T in the Philippines. If you are with this writers advocacy (who has been into science for Decades as teacher and researcher), we should put together our ONE CENT for the countrys struggling science foundation! ooo000ooo NEXT TOPIC : Fostering Technology Innovation: The Road to a Strong S & T Philippines SHARE S & T THOUGHTS through E-Mail: drpacjr@yahoo.com.

To us, dwindling population of Filipino scientists, it appears that the much-touted K to 12 Basic Education Program is contributory to the countrys overall LOW performance in Science. The DepEd honchos have twitted a justification why Science, under the new BSP, is again not taught as a separate subject in Grades 1 and 2! Their reason: (1) Science has never been taught as an independent discipline since 1983-1984, (2) No Asian countries teach the Science as a separate, not even
the developed ones like Singapore, but Brunei in Grade 1, and (3) as though a justification, DepEd says Its (science) integrated in various learning areas in Grades I and 2! While Filipino science students and scientists have put the country in the worlds map of achievers, it cannot be denied that they do it on an individual or small team efforts. The total batting average is far off the international level of performance in science, when a greater bulk of science students show encouraging signs
Yes, all this could only be attributed to the upright governance that the present administration is pursuing. Indeed its not yet too late for the country to rise again. All it takes is a serious regime that despises graft and all forms of irregularities. Given a truly dedicated and honest leadership, the economy is sure to grow as people will not anymore hesitate to give their taxes, and investment confidence either home-
grown or foreignbased will likewise increase, resulting in more vibrant economic activities. We hope everyone will cherish these developments and continue to support the governments programs and operations geared towards economic prosperity. We cannot afford to lose this opportunity. We should not neglect our duties demanded of us as members of this emerging economy. Above all, we should not act like crabs and tear down this development.

Children are not the only ones needing reminders on important matters. Adults all the more need the same. With their deteriorating memory, there are more things that they tend to forget than children do. And indeed, there are some things they need to be reminded about this month of May, considered by many as having the most number of fiestas. These are things to observe, avoid, and ponder on. They cant just ignore these, or else they surely would run into trouble. And instead of enjoying their summer, they might end up feeling sorry that it came. One such reminder is a stern warning against cholesterol, uric acid, fats, and other food contents that are injurious to health. As fiestas take place here, there, and everywhere, those who have standing doctors caution should avoid all these for them to stay in
good health. They cant deny the fact that some of these are lethal and severely hazardous to health. Alcohol, for instance, could cause heart attack, or stroke, to those with high blood pressure and heart problems. The temptation to partake of delicious foods is understandably strong. They are there every time such foods are laden on the table. Problem is that, they only taste good to the mouth. Once they are swallowed and start to descend the throat down to the stomach, their effect is almost toxic rather than nutritious especially to people at certain age brackets, triggering certain ailments like arthritis, diabetes, high blood, etc., that necessitate medical treatment. It takes self-control and discipline to avoid such ailments. And this means avoiding these food stuffs no matter how deliciously prepared they are. Nothing beats abstinence
