From the East

Brothers, At our final stated communication in April, we enjoyed a most excellent Master Mason degree officiated over by Brother Wayne Paul. He and his degree team made us all proud as Brothers Walter Eric Lawrence and Justin Michael Taylor were Raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. Brother Wilmer Atwell once again enthralled us with his lecture, and Brother Jesse Tiner delivered the charge to the newly Raised Master Masons, reminding us all at the same time why we are here and why we are Masons. At our stated communication on May 14th, Mr. Freeman Allen Edwards and Mr. Scott Thomas Smith will be exposed to the mysteries of Freemasonry for the first time at an Entered Apprentice degree presided over by Brother Brian Gilvey. This will be Brother Gilveys first experience in the East for a degree, and we should all plan to be there to give him our full support. Brother Gilvey will have practices for the Entered Apprentice degree at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 7th and on Monday, May 13th. Anyone who would like to take a part in the degree should show-up at the practices. At the end of this month, Brothers Bill Goldwire, Jesse Tiner, and I will represent Amelia Lodge at the annual Grand Communication in Orlando. There is a lot of work on the agenda, some of which is expected to be controversial, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. I will have a full report for you when we return in June. Speaking of June, we have several Brothers who are due to receive length of service awards for forty years, fifty years, and a couple of more than sixty years. I am planning to have a family night in June and to present these awards in the dining room before the tyled meeting. I will be giving you more information as the plan firms-up. Before I close, I would like to formally thank the Worthy Matron and the Sisters and Brothers of Fernandina Chapter No. 55 of the Order of the Eastern Star for the $600.00 Love Gift that they gave to the Lodge last month. We are indeed grateful for everything that the ladies do for us all year and every year. Sincerely and fraternally, Zeb Turner, Worshipful Master

The Broken Column

Brother Edward Lamont Kelley, age 72, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013. Brother Kelley was Raised in Amelia Lodge on September 22, 1987, and he remained a faithful Brother Mason since that day. He was also a member of the Jacksonville Scottish Rite bodies. Following funeral services at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach, Brother Kelleys remains were laid to rest in the Jacksonville National Cemetery with full military honors. The family did not request Masonic funeral services. Brother Kelley will be long remembered and much missed.

The Mail Bag

Dear Brother Ed, Wow! Another year has gone by and it is time to celebrate my Masonic birthday again. It has truly been a wonderful gift to have enjoyed this annual Masonic birthday celebration. I am sure my Brothers enjoy it as well. I regret that I cannot attend this year. We still own a home there, but it is up for sale, and we are moving to Central Georgia. Please give my best to all of the Brothers and those traveling through the Master Mason degree. Fraternally, Melvin Usery

The New Master Mason

During a candidate's progress through the three degrees, he is the most important person in the Lodge. We heap all kinds of attention upon him as we provide him with the symbolic working tools. Then once he has been raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason, we turn our attention to the next candidate. It is easy for the newly raised Master Mason to become a statistic and be neglected in the Lodge. He has all of those shiny new working tools, but he is still in darkness. He has his union card, but he is as yet unemployed. There are no designs upon his trestleboard. He may easily become bored, frustrated, and disinterested; a stranger in a strange place, he may become reluctant to come back on meeting nights. And he will eventually neglect to pay his dues, be suspended, and fall by the wayside, another former Brother who we lost by our indifference. All of us, not just the officers of the Lodge, need to take special interest in all of our Brothers, but more particularly in our newly raised Brothers. We need to make an earnest effort to get all of our Brothers involved in the work of the Lodge and fill their trestleboards with Masonic designs. Let us match the talents, the skills, the interests, and the abilities of our Brothers to the needs of the Lodge. Let us all help our new Brothers to employ the working tools we have placed in their hands as best they are able. And let us give the new Master Mason a reason to continue with the Lodge, and perhaps some of our Brothers who have gone astray will find a reason to return. Most importantly, let us make sure every Brother knows that he is an important part of the Lodge. He is important, because it takes all of us. We are not members of a club! We are Brothers! Adapted from an article by Edward R. Halpaus, Education Officer of the Grand Lodge of Minnesota, published in Mehr Licht (More Light), January 2007.

Brothers, do not forget to send in your 2013 dues payment to the Secretary!
